Okay, whenever I sign onto AIM a bunch of Internet Explorer popups come up. I tried uninstalling IE but it still happens. What can I do?

stop using AIM... get Trillian, it works perfectly fine for AIM and its not that difficult to use if you take 15 min to learn, and trillian doesnt have any pop-ups so it should fix your problem (granted it doesnt *fix* it but it does get it out of your way)

If I get trillian can I still talk to people on AIM?

yes, trillian is merely a client that allows you to use ICQ, Yahoo, IRC, MSN and AIM without having 5 different progs open, the setup wizard should let you set up your aim without to much difficulty, it will even transfer your friends list

Trillian (http://trillian.cc) is the all purpose messenger. It acts exactly the same way as AIM. No one will be able to tell whether you're using AIM or Trillian. The only difference is Trillian > AIM.

I actually love Trillian so much I bought the Pro version. :)

Don't worry about AIM, you can uninstall it but keep it if you don't like Trillian which is well... insane... you will like it... no LOVE it! Bwa ha ha!

Thanks.

One more question if I uninstall AIM do I lose my buddy list?

When you sign on the same name at a different place it still has the same buddy list so it will stay the same when you switch over.

No, the buddy list is stored on a remote AIM server.

To address the original question / topic, you might want to run Adaware and Spybot (after updating their respective reference files, of course), then get Firefox (click here (http://mozilla.org/products/firefox)).

Also, use IE to run Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and make sure that all your updates are installed. There is a recent patch to IE, so make sure you get that.

AIM likes to throw crapola at you, so get Trillian. If you really don't like that idea, uninstall AIM, download the latest version, and install it.

Let him read this.

From mozilla.org
We are an open source community of developers and testers

The Mozilla project's launch by Netscape in 1998 was a defining moment for the open source movement. We continue to be a leader and partner in open source development, providing low cost and alternative choices for technology. And, with millions of users, we are one of the largest distributors of open source software.

We have a large, active development community that interacts via newsgroups, mailing lists, IRC channels, and web sites. We welcome all newcomers.

Our development takes place in the public eye. See our development roadmap for the directions our technology is heading.

We believe and practice the canons of open source development: release early and often, listen to your users, and given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow.

Mozilla is the antithesis of spyware and adware. If anything, IE is more prone to that sort of internet smut than Mozilla is. Tell your dad to actually read up about it instead of being blinded by the bug ridden, security compromising, quality control lacking monolith that is Microsoft.

Trillian is the worst piece of programming ever put onto this earth. I hate it's guts.

It's the best. You obviously don't know how to use it correctly. I even went further and paid to have Trillian Pro. Such amazing software. :)

Trillian doesn't have guts but if you say that one more time I will be forced to remove yours and put them in a tiny tupperware container.
