I'm guess "a slice of pie" means Nader.

In that case, none of those choices really *should* be President. I wish the US was not a two party system.

I share this view, as did America's Founding Fathers.

(Washington warned about two things in his farewell address: Partison Politics (2-party system) and foreign affairs. Interesting how both of them have done nothing but hurt America in a global sense, and internally.)

Wasn't it Madison who said that?

Either way, the Presidents through Madison (and maybe Monroe) knew exactly what they were doing and didn't take bullshit when it came to running a nation. Granted, things were slightly less complicated, and they weren't full of themselves on an American power trip, but I still think they were some of the best Presidents we have ever had. Lincoln, Grant, FDR, Kennedy, and Clinton are on that list, too.

I wonder what would happen if someone won off a write-in vote? When I turn 18 I'm voting for Mario Lemiuex, and he's Canadian.

well its political so now im mad...anywase

2 party system works better hten people give credit for. European nations that have many parties constantly change there goverment but hardly never get anything done due to the split votes thus alot of "back scratching" is done to other parties which goes back and forth until hardly any party is ppure at all. not to mention in this system there is an overwhelming access of power in the excecutive branch making it less democratical and more tyranical(weird how more uniformity in the 2 party allows more freedom)

also in america the electorate rules the swing of the two parties. Dean lost but due to the amount of attention that he was able to get a realization was brought upon that theyh can win votes from a libral stand point, thus (if u watched democratic convention) there was a more left then accpected train of thought

two party system sucks cause theres not that many people to vote for but by default*the part wants voters to vote for there candidate so they have one more vote* u should technicly get someone who u lik anywase

history class over....Krs-One

2 party system works because even if your canidate doesnt represent everything you want, he's on the side the represents more of what you want. If there were more political parties, they would all mesh together until you couldnt tell one's political views from another.

Right now the extreme left and right will always vote for their party, but its the moderate middle that has the political power. A candidate must compromise to get these votes while still staying loyal to thier cause. If more parties had serious clout, they would all be vying for the moderate middle and all be clones of each other. It would become a beauty contenst instead of an election.

Well one thing people have to remember is that even though there are only 2 major parties, the U.S. is not just a 2-party system. Anyone that is willing is able to vote for the communist or green parties or any of the multitude of other parties out there.

While it may seem like there are only 2 parties out there, remember FDR won the election and beat both Reps and Dems while running for the Progressive party.

I agree; two party systems are good because the extremists have very little political power.

Sure, anyone can run for President, but the fact remains that our government is based on a two party system. There are only Republicans and Democrats (by name) in Congress.

But that fact does not keep anyone out of office like a true 2-party system would. Like I referenced before, FDR won on a 3rd party ticket and others have come close. In a true 2-party system that would never happen.

I'm pretty sure FDR won that just because we were in the depression.

doubledown

Actually he won his first presidential election running as a Dem after Hoover refused to run again because of the Depression. FDR continued on the dem ticket for his 2nd and 3rd election but after several disputes joined the Progressive Party where he won his 4th term in office.

This of course led to the passage of the 22nd admendment which limits a President to only 2 terms in office

Maybe its US history class a couple of forum posters need to retake.

Your previous post is simply false. Reminds me of some of the things certain other posters have said on this forum.

FDR won 4 terms as a Democrat. His first term was won against Hoover.

Excuse me, I had a slight error in my memory... call me senile in my old age.

It was FDR's VP who was the member of the Progressive Party

I apologize fully for my mistake.

xyxaxyz2
08-14-2004, 12:17 PM
Which?

Henry Wallace, FDR's VP who was dropped in 1944 and replaced by Truman, was a member of the Democratic party throughout his vice presidency. He then created the Progressive party (after FDR was already dead).

Wallace ran and lost against Truman in 1948.

I had my roselvelts mixed up.
TR got fed up with the party and joined the Progressives (Bull Moose) FDR did remain with the Dems although he did unsuccessfully try to purge them from office

Henry Wallace was FDR's VP and after being kicked from the ballot ran for the Progressive party.

hehe woah intelegance in tao...weird

anywase its pretty good to remember that while fdr was a democrat all the terms he served the democratic party shifted ENTIRELY. i mean new hampshire and vermont were the only two states to vote against him (the two most liberal states at that time) and that was becouse they were still loyal to the orriginal republican party

also cant forget them whigs(hehe i cant get over how dumb of a political party name that is) but yeah they were around and then a third part came around, the republicans

also as stated inside the two parties are multitudes of left swining right swinging and moderate veiws so despite the "overall" votes going towards there parties things the real votes go towards there (and there electorates) votes

also wes be gotten some of dem independent foke in the senate...weirdos :)

peace lads keep the kwoledge

i just love the bit on the bush vs tic tacs where it says:

Bush

Causes unprecedented world-wide support to turn against the U.S. with inflammatory rhetoric and borderline imperialism.

Tic Tacs

Just sits there.
