View Full Version : The official TAO forums signature boycotting thread

Signatures suck. They're full of stupid quotes, endless lines of text, really large pictures you get sick of seeing over and over again, and that take forever to load thanks to slow free image hosts. They disrupt the flow of threads that somehow manage to stay on-topic. They're ugly as sin.

I've had signatures turned off here a week after joining; due to the increasing insanity found in people's sigs, others are starting to follow.

This thread will be dedicated to people who are sick of all the signature crap.

As a sidenote, there are a select few times I actually want to see people's signatures. This is quite easy to do (for me at least, in Mozilla Firefox. If someone could confirm that it works in IE it would be appreciated.) Normally my URL looks like http://www.tacticsarena.com/forum/ and a cookie is stored for that domain with my user profile. When I want to see a thread with sigs in it, I just change the url to http://tacticsarena.com/forum/ which is treated as another domain entirely, with another set of cookies. I end up looking through the thread as a guest user, and by default, guests are set to view sigs.

WHAT TO DO:
1) Click the user cp button
2) Edit Profile
3) change your signature to something VERY SMALL, that points to this thread. See mine for an example. Click Sumbit Modifications.
4) Edit options
5) About midway down, you find Show user's signatures in their posts? Set this to no. Click Sumbit Modifications.
6) Post here.

Whether it be because you hate sigs in general, or you just think there are too many out of hand... join. You know you want to.

EDIT: Oddly enough, I can't get my tiny signature to show up. Fitting. Perhaps it would be better without it, though harder to get people to sign up...
EDIT 2: OK, it's in post #2. I guess they're just not as dynamic as I thought.

Excellent thread, plusminus. I have edited my signature accordingly. Also, that neat trick with the different domains works well in Safari (not that anyone cares, but it is an excellent web browser).

Hugh, the sigs are meant for fun, but when they start hindering the actual content of the threads, it gets a little annoying. No one has to turn them off, but this thread is for those of us enlightened enough to realize that signatures and banners are horrendously ugly and serve no other purpose than to be a hugely gaudy reminder of the bad graphics editing skills of most of the members here.

What we need is a sort of manifesto; some kind of tenet that demands the implementation of signature size limits; not through mere suggestion, but a heavily enforced law.

Viva la sig resistance!

DeadFishGuy

My sig is my way of expressing creativity. I'm keeping it.

However, I do partially agree. Siggies can get in the way. Thus, I used [size=1] tags to reduce my sig size. I also took away some of the spaces between the lines.

No, I don't.

Without sigs, it is too easy to miss small posts.
If avatars are turned on, all posts become the same size, unless they are more than a few lines long. Of course, those without avatars are slightly smaller, but they are no smaller than they would be if sigs were turned on. In fact, I'd say that smaller posts by those with no signature are swallowed up more easily with signatures turned on.

No, I just have signatures turned off, so I can't see what you're talking about. However, I looked again, and I still think it's too big. Too much text. Maybe if you shortened the line about the units to:

A collection of genuine, 100% real, absolutely honest-to-god screenshots of the new units!!
*Note: units may not be real.

I'm much more concerned with mindless posts, useless threads and spamming, than I am with what someone has in their signature. In all honesty, what does it matter? Big, small, one quote, 2 quotes, it doesn't affect the frequency or quality of my posts. Oh well, to each their own.

It's only currently easy to miss small posts due to most people having signatures that are 10 times larger than their actual post.

If everyone has moderate sized sigs, every post becomes more distinct and therefore easier to read.

Oh, sorry.

I went one step further and got rid of the text alltogether. No-one reads it anyway.

I kept the banner because I use it to to help me find where I posted on a thread. I just look for something that's bright green with a picture of a pilot on it. (Specifically, Eagle from Advance Wars.)

It's not just for show, it has practical use too.

That's not right.

Actually it's only hard to miss small posts from people with no sigs, when everyone else has giant signatures. It drowns them out. Disabling sigs, the only big posts are the ones with a lot to say. And it's easy to focus on every small post because they just come one after the other, with no glaring banners interrupting the flow.

It does not affect the quality of posts, no. It does affect the quality of the thread overall though. And yes, mindless posts and useless threads are a pain too, hence the ignore list...

Yes they are, however it's quite easy to express yourself with the content in your actual posts. And I'm actually more concerned with reading discussions that take place in threads than with absorbing all this free creative expression.

A boycott is generally a way of protesting something. If you boycott a company, it's often because you don't like their business practices. If that gets them to change then you often stop the boycott.

This pretty much sums it up, for me. I have no problem with people " boycotting " whatever they want. If you don't like sigs, don't use one. That's well within your rights. However, I like my banner and my quote. I've had the banner a long time and my quote has been there since my register date. I don't want to have to give them up just because people have decided to start a new fad. Honestly, I find this whole thing ricidulous.

Tama Drummer
08-14-2004, 01:14 PM
Meh, you can take me off the "list" since I turned them on again.

What I normally do is look to signature to see who is posting. If there is some signature of a noob that I see, I usually will just scroll right past it. Also I just like to see MOST of the banners that are out there.

Excuse me? I like a lot of the banners here, mine included. I don't think the majority of them are as bad as you make them out to be. I'm not going to turn off banners, because that's often how I recognize someone. I admit, there is the avatar, but if I'm scrolling fast, say looking for where I left off in a thread, then I need banners to help me differentiate. I think it's a shame not to be able to see some of the very cool banners that show up on occasion, because I find it fun to look at them, and I think the person deserves at least that it gets looked at. I mean, what's the point if everyone is just going to turn banners off?

Now, there are several large an obnoxious banners, but not that many! Sheesh. The good outweighs the bad, at least for me.

T3km4n
08-14-2004, 03:03 PM
Ah, whatever, I'm probably going to turn banners back on, because, you know, Ele is right, isn't she always? So, I guess the good outweighs the bad and we could just tell people with banners to big to make them smaller, but my thread about that is uber-flamed!

Swartzstrom
08-14-2004, 03:03 PM
I guess what Elentari means by large obnoxious banners is the time when I got my FF7 banner and had to ask 3rd to shrink it. Remember 3rd?

By the way, how can you not like my banner? It's cool! I like looking at Elentari's banner too, it's cool too! And my quote makes perfect sense!

Why do you want your banner smaller ck1? It seems fine to me, your sig is good size. But if you want... I believe I still have it saved as in the program I made it in, so I could re-size it better than anyone else probably could.

You can obviously tell which side I'm in favor of. The problem is not sigs in general it's the under-moderation of them and the overuse of them. Limits that have been set need to be enforced. If a few examples are made of people, everyone else will surely fall in line accordingly. Those are my thoughts. I'm APZ and I approve this post.

Jeffery
08-15-2004, 06:24 PM
I have seen ones (and had some) siggy's that were to big.

And the staff has warned some people about some and had them downsize it. I have also seen polite reminders to have banners and siggy's shrinked by the owner.

But in the end, i don't think it truly affects the game play, so while a mod taking some time to do ask people to limit it, having staff do it is unresonable expectation.

ArcPaladinZero
08-15-2004, 06:51 PM
Well the forum for myself has become independent of the game. I'm not asking the game mods, maybe there should be just forum mods that have nothing to do with the actual game. Those that dedicate full time to the forum. I know that might sound a bit strange but some people, such as myself, just come to the forum and not play the game.

From this rather extensive definition on dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=grammar), it seems as though spelling can technically be part of grammar. See the definitions that refer to structural correctness. Spelling seems to be an integral part of the structure of language, no?

Why not let personality show through posts, instead of mundane groups of words underneath posts? An avatar can identify, but I would much rather someone judge me on the content of my posts than on the relevance of a quote or the quality of an image.

Absolutely. Also it looks good unlike some of the other ones around here. But I guess hoping to teach style is a bit too much, so I'll settle for space considerations.

Other successful boards set regulations in graphic size and # of lines. Their Mods then pass out warnings and then suspensions. People very quickly come in line.

Stratics Guidelines (http://boards.stratics.com/rules/uo_roc.php)

Please adhere to the following restriction for images that are not directly related to the topic of the thread under discussion:
- Maximum size of image file(s): 35k

I realize the irony Jeffrey. However there is reasoning behind it.

a) some of the people on the list actually like signatures. They are just overwhelmed by the hugeness of some, and find it easier to read the forums without them.

b) I, as well as others, have a link to this thread in order to avoid perpetually bumping it. It's a small a sig as one could hope for.

c) some people really do have cool signatures or banners, such as thrdflrmshr, that follow all trimmed-down guidelines.

Yes, but telling people a whole lot of nothing can be accomplished much easier by not telling them to begin with. Your siggy has 2 banners, and an overly large text portion. One or the other would be better than both.

imagination
09-25-2004, 03:49 PM
yes my siggy has 2 banners ... one a clan banner and 2 the floating woot. both of them i love my siggy also has something im proud of, it says in my very first 4 days of playing i was over the 1000 mark. some players boast that they can do it in a day but my question to them was how long did it take them the first time. my siggy also has an ingame quote by knowledge, you can read it, and see that it is pretty funny. i have a pole vault website because that is one of the few things in this world that i truely love with all my heart, if pole vault didnt exist then i would be extremely bored in life. last i have a pointless comment that i aggree i could take out, but by reading it you can also tell a little more about my personality, if you hadnt read some of my 600 some posts you would still know something about how i think and what those posts whatever they were would have been like.

Was this in reference to me? I could tone mine down some, that's not a problem. I kind of like mine big to better simulate those with overdone banners. And in recent developments, has anyone seen T3km4n 's new banner? I could be wrong guys, but I think he's targeting that one at me. We need to get him in here to post, but you couldn't see them anyways. Here's the banner I currently have up:

I saw on some forum, that it automatically resized your banner to the specifications set. Is that what you mean Xerent? I guess I'd be cool with that, assuming the banner sizes aren't set TOO small, or too big that images would need to stretch. Yea... that WOULD'NT work, have images forced to be a certain width and height. What if you have a little button, and it has to expand to 500 x 100 or something like that.
