View Full Version : How about some originality?

There are many many ideas here, and yet many of them seem so familiar. Want to hear something revolutionary????
BE ORIGINAL
Don't take units from Warcraft, D&D, Starcraft or you other favorite games, and copy them into here. Don't just attempt to modify a character someone else has made.
If you really want to suggest units, read the guidelines closely, then sit down and think for a while. Then show us what YOU are able to create, not what someone else has already made.

look in my compilation. ive made probably about 30 units. if i borrow an idea from a game now and then, so be it. however, i can almost guarantee to you that some game, or film, or anything else, at some time, has used any given idea that anyone is likely to "create".
after hundreds of years of people creating bad guys and monsters to fit whatever we are making, do you really expect everyone in this forum to come up with a totally different concept? even if they did, chances are theyd be crap coz nearly every good idea has already been taken, by someone, at some time.
i cant speak for anyone else, but in all od my ideas, i have tried bring something new to the game. some of the units have names that have appeared elsewhere, some are based on other things in design as well, and quite a few i think up myself.
if i do take an idea from somewhere, i nearly always try to modify and change it so that it is balanced in TAO and fits into the game.
i am opposed to complete plain ripoffs however, when people dont try at all to bring something to the game, things like the Tank Mage from a while ago...

First, if you feel this was directed at you, then maybe you might be feeling guilty for a reason........
Second. Yes, you have lots of units, and each is bery detailed. But, if your so good at making new units, why steal them from other games????
Yes, things like clerics and dwarves are common to lots and lots of games. But when someone can take one look at a description, and name the game it is from, then it is WAY to unoriginal. The idea of this forum is not a place where people can just post work others have done, but to suggest their own ideas for units for the game. When a unit is a direct ripoff of a copyrighted work, it will be unusable. So why waste time posting units that can't be used?
Again, if you take this personal Walrus, then you might want to take a closer look at yourself.

i speak for myself. the message was directed at a lot of people, and since you commented on 2 of my units complaining about unoriginality, i would assume i am one of the ones it is directed at. any questions?
and as i said, i try to modify all the units i create if they are based on another game. i usually note at the top where i got the idea from. if people have played that game a lot, then its pretty likely that they will recognise the unit, especially if i include a picture to aid the description of the unit.
what sickens me is when people claim that ive put no thought into the unit and just copied it from somewhere else. that is rubbish. if i wanted to do that, the front page would constantly be filled with nothing but walrus ripoffs from other games with no attempt of originality. i think long and hard before posting my units, whether they are my own idea or not.
and rememeber what i said in my 1st post on this thread; virtually every idea imaginable has been used at some time by someone else. it is extremely hard to constantly think of new material, and a lot of the ones which people claim are ripoffs, i have no idea that they are coz ive never played the game they come from.

Kudos to anyone who can figure out what game influenced my beast units in the TAO 2 thread...

lol. despite the fact that most of my units are NOT warcraft 3 based (if u say that something like "undead" is strictly from warcraft, you are a cabbage), and despite the fact that i post in far more forums than those two, and despite the fact that i tend not to flame people, and despite the fact that i DIDNT make the shadow_teen account. seriously....other than those minor problems, not bad.
