1. First, you must realize that you made a terrible mistake joining this noob clan and wonder why in the world you decided to join them in the first place. Your reputation has been shot and you believe that if you stay in this clan, you will forever be known as the guy from "THAT" clan.

2. Come to grips that even though you made a mistake in joining this clan in the first place, it is ok. You will survive and still can have fun with this game. Everyone makes mistakes, just not as big as the one you made joining that clan.

3. Once you realize that you are ok and if you leave the clan other clans will invite you in (unless you have been labeled for life as the guy from "THAT" clan), you can commence with the pleasantries of leaving the clan.
First you may want to say goodbye to your fellow clanmates. It is a nice courtesy. Be cordial in your delievery, but do not be overdramatic. Also, if at all possible, do not be insulting or belittle the clan. You don't want to burn bridges on the way out.

If you are a sick and evil person, you may get into a game with someone in your clan, preferably someone higher rated and easy to beat, and begin your game. As soon as it becomes apparent that you are going to win, go to step 4 before the game is over. You get cool rating points and that clan will declare war on you for being such a jerk. What a send off!

No matter what you do, DO NOT come on to the forums and post, "I Left my clan because they were noobs. Anyone want me?" ESPECIALLY DO NOT come on and make a new thread for this announcement. REALLY ESPECIALLY TRULY SINCERELY DO NOT send a PM to everyone online announcing your freedom. No one really cares.
4. Now the moment you have been waiting for. To actually leave your clan, type the leave command, /leave. Do not put anything before the / and do not put anything after the e
(I have to leave the period out because someone would probably type "/leave." if I didn't.)

5. If a message comes up and says, "You cannot leave your clan while you are the leader." then you have a tough decision ahead.
If it is in one of the 3 grey/gold servers, you can usually pawn your clan off to a poor unsuspecting grey by typing "/leader poor unsuspecting grey" where "poor unsuspecting grey" is the name of your new leader.

If you are on Revelation, your job can be more difficult. If you have anyone in your clan besides yourself, you are in luck. You can burden them with the leadership of "I Love Donkey Kicks" or whatever your clan is called by typing "/leader Gold Sap" where "Gold Sap" is the poor sap that is going to be stuck with your clan.

If you are in Revelation and no one is part of your clan, you are going to have a tougher time. Your choices are to either con some poor gold sap into joining your clan then passing leadership quickly and scramming, or to find one of the moderators and give them you credit card number, personal check or a plate of cookies and they can delete your clan. This is NOT the prefered method.
6. Enjoy your new found freedom. Play your old clanmates now for ratings and for fun. Make new friends and see the wonders of TAO from the outside of a clan. Isn't it great?

If you have enjoyed this commentary, please see our other helpful threads, "How to: Join a Clan" and "How to: Make a Clan". They are just as helpful and enjoyable. And remember, only you can prevent noob clan membership.

You forgot:

Ready to leave your clan in a large bang?
Spam your clans forums. Curse and scream, and accuse the leaders of random offenses.
Challenge your clan allies to combat, then stall while cursing them out.
Sit in the lobby and shout how badly your clan sucks.

You'll never even need to type /leave and you'll be free in no time.

I still laugh everytime I read this thread. I hate to be egotistical, but I believe this was my best thread by far. I wish it got stickied. Oh well... it's time for a new group of noobs to learn the delicate process of leaving their clan. Enjoy.

Am I allowed to re-necro this? A new generation of posters are here and they too need to learn the way to subtly leave their clan. It is, afterall, the second most important decision anyone on TAO can make.

No, because you have been away too long and haven't given us much new material to laugh at lately. Now go be funny.

How to: leave your clan. (In simpler terms).

1. Log in.
2*. Type "/leader" and an account name to hand off the clan's leader position if you are the current clan leader.
3. Type "/leave".

*If noone is currently in your clan, either invite someone to take the leader position from you, or have a moderator take the clan off your hands with one of their "dummy" accounts. In either scenario, you will then be able to proceed to Step 3.

Alternative method: If you are not the current clan leader, and the clan leader is online, ask him/her to expel you by telling them to type "/expel [Your account name here]". You then don't have to follow the complicated process stated above.

Care to sticky this? ;)
