Sorry for the extreme posting.

Each of the persons listed are listed as killed on 9/11 due to each of the 4 planes crashing.
Look through the list, and you'll see names representing every facet of American life, from rich, to poor, from minority to caucasion, man woman and child are all represented here.
Truly, they represent what America is and should be, the freeest country in the world.

If any of you knew any of these people personally, feel free to PM me and ask for their name to be highlighted.

Thank you Xerent. I do appeciate it.

Now to repost what I feel was a pretty interesting point.

A few years back, I heard of a study that said that you could measure the intensity of a tragedy by how many jokes that are told about it. For example, how many Oklahoma City Bombing jokes have you heard? I haven't heard many due to the fact that it affect so many people, if not by relationship, then by the fact it hurt children. On the other hand, I still hear Need Another Seven Astronauts (NASA) jokes to this day. While it was a tragedy, it didn't affect many people personally and was ok to joke about.

Humor is a way that we deal with the pain of tragedy, but some tragedy is just too intense and horrific to deal with humorously. Only the immature or heartless use these types of tragedies to be the centerpoint of their jokes.

What is everyone's opinion on making this day a national holiday?

Also, I think there needs to be an actual name for this event, instead of having everyone refer to it by the date on which it happened. I just can't think of an appropriate name right now.

Medemia

I say no. There was talk of this the year after it happened, and most of the talk was to call it Patriot's Day. Personally, I feel that if it is made into a holiday, that it will lose it's meaning. Look at Memorial Day. For most people, it's just a day to go out and barbeque. Veteran's Day? A day off of work. How many of us go and remember the true meaning of President's Day? How about going and helping the minority cause on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday? Future generations will make this day a nice day to have off from work. The farther we get from it, the less it means.

Now the December Day of Rememberance is a nice way to remember Pearl Harbor. It's not a national holiday, but it is marked on US calendars. Hopefully when people see it on the calendar, they have a brief moment they remember our WWII Veterans who fought to save the world from tyranny. I can see that as a fitting tribute to Patriot's Day. Not a holiday, but a day of rememberance.

Thanks for helping Xerent and Julia. It was longer than I had thought it would be.

As for national holiday, I say no. Why does someone need out of school or off work?
I say instead, have schools have an assembly on this date, and teach kids to remember that bad things do happen. Maybe try and teach them that violence on even small scale is just as unnaceptable.

This thread is useful, but u should have put it in the 9/11 pentagon video, but i don't care,
back to the subject, this day was very devistating to me and many others, i think everyone in the USA joined together and we faught through the agony that was acompished by the damn terroists. anywho, that day of school, all we did was watch the news, which was luck b/c we had a test on that day but, that was a very sad day indeed.

Even though 9/11 is just the date, for some reason it feels like a fitting name. The "911 and America was in a state of emergency" has always made sense to me.

But what about teaching then the causes that lead up to something like this, about the sort of culture that people inhabit, and the whole series of events that occur before a catastrophe happens.

Violence is unnaceptable, but stopping violence is like trying to dam a river, and may altogether fail to solve the problem as the causes still exist.

I agree. So maybe have a cultural tolerance seminar too? You will never solve it comepletely, but every little bit helps.

Terrorist that day didn't care who you were, as long as you were American. They killed Democrats and Rebublicans, Green Party, Independents, Green Peace protestors, Corporate CEOs, housewifes, children, fathers, gays, Christians, athiest. It didn't matter what their beliefs, just that they were American. In the end, politics be damned. We suffered as a nation that day, as one people despite our multiple labels we usually give ourselves.

Patriot's Day is the worst name I have ever witnessed. God help us if it becomes known as that.

I also don't think it should be a holiday. I think it should be remembered, but with something along the lines of what Jeffery is suggesting.

I'm all for it.
There is a difference between " moving on" and " forgetting".
As Americans, we all need to remember what happened that day.
It's also important for future generations to understand, and take seriously, the events of 9/11.
However, we can't let it control our lives and consume us. The current administration wants us to obsess and live in fear. I won't do it.

And Hugh, I totally agree. The administration of this country will not stop talking about it. It pisses me off that they think they can use that as an example because it happened when they were in office.

Wait... it happened when they were in charge! Doesn't that say something them? I'm not trying to say that if Al Gore were president those attacks would never have happened, but it is an interesting thought.

why would we mix a thread that is memorializing the 9/11 tragedy with a thread that makes a mockery of this tragedy

Personally I think it should be a day of rememberance. No we shouldn't get out of school or off of work. Why? Because it will just turn into another party day. It should be a national day of rememberance. There should be a nation-wide moment of silence. Respect those who lost their lives. Don't let this day turn into another hey let's go out and get drunk or party. Mourning, should be this day's soul purpose. That's just my two cents.

Should we also have a holiday for the USS Cole being attacked, or Khobar towers, or OKC Bombing? This was one terror attack in a list of terror attacks and it wont be the last. It probably wont be the biggest either. Look at Spain and the train bombing, or Russia and the airline bombs or to any where else. We arent the only nation under attack by terrorist and making a holiday out of one incident is not the way to go about it.

this was the first extreme attack on America by terrorists. go back and see how long it takes you to read through the names of the people who died and then come back and tell us that this day doesn't deserve a day of rememberance.

I don't believe he said it should not have a day of rememberance. I don't think there is any way to stop a day of rememberance as long as anyone is alive who remembers that day. But like Pearl Harbor before it, to make it a holiday for the most successful attack by an enemy does seem ludicrous. If the day ever comes where we finally defeat terrorism (highly unlikely), that should be the day a holiday is created.

The attacks happened on my 16th birthday. I remember coming home from school, putting together the foosball table I'd got, and turning on the TV for a break... needless to say, the table didn't get put together until the weekend. We went out for a meal that night, but all we could think about was what had happened.

I was off work that day. I was co-owner of a restaurant, and we each took one day a week off. I woke up, and turned on the news.
I immediately drove to town to some firends house, and spent the day with them watching in horror.

My co-owners closed the restaurant, and went home, becaue no one was going out to eat. Everyone was in shock.
The reaction by the government was what I thought was beautiful. All political alliances were thrown out, and everyone was the same thing. Americans.

I was sad when after a very short time, politics again came to the fore, and the sides started fighting again.

As the deathtolls climbed, it was almost unbelievable. The US for so many years had become accustomed to being immune to the attacks the rest of the world had come to know. How quickly we became used to the fact that we are not imune anymore.

The attacks on the Cole, and the embassies, were tragic, but it took the 9/11 attacks to really punch it home that we are not above the rest of thw world.

A holiday? No, like someone else already said I see a holiday as just another day off, no matter what day it is.

However, it should definitely be marked down on all calendars. I haven't bought a calendar recently but I'd be surprised if it wasn't mentioned.

My middle school started school a few days before 9/11, so on Sept 11th my class was in the middle of receiving our information for the rest of the school year. So when my principal took the mic and said that the pentagon and wtc had been attacked, I thought that he was just making some kind of a sick joke or something and went back to class as usual like most of my school did. :\ Only until the rest of the staff told us what had happened did anybody figure it out.

On a separate note, both my Dad and stepmom are flying today. I'm not worried but personally, it'd freak me out a little bit.

I was watching Ali McBill when it happened in Hong Kong and then the news came up and I didn't look and changed channel to watch The Practice, 5 minutes later that channel cought up too and I chnaged again to watch something else and the third time they had interrupted that channel too I understood it was something important.

In fact I remeber I called my friend to tell him to turn on his TV and he said "Oh that's nothing, it won't affect events in the world really."

I find it sad that after such a tragic event, a moment when the whole world was watching and waiting for how your government would react they just increased senseless violence by bombing Afghanistan and the 'unconnected' Iraq.

Not being an American I can only empathise with your people but I have to say once again your government has failed and hopefully misrepresented you.

On the national holiday... Well it wouldn't really affect me, but i don't think it's necessary to remember the evvent as usualy the only thing that connects the holiday to remembering the event is the name. Actually doing something that is a little more relevant would be a nice change.

Actually, the invasion of Afghanistan was quite a just mission, as Al Quida was being protected by the Taliban government of Afghanistan. The releatively easy switch of government there is proof that the people in general in Afghanistan supported the change in government.
I do agree that the invasion of Iraq should never have been justified under the banner of war on terrorism.

But i agree national holidays are overblown in the US. I would much rather simply have a day of remembrance, much as pearl Harbor's day of remembrance.

Almost and no.

The invasion was justified on reasons of WMD's being created still, as well as the "fact" that Iraq was supporting global terrorists such as Al Quaida.

I saw a Leunig cartoon once, i wish I could remember it. It quoted someone talking about Afghanistan being liberated from the terrorists so that they can forever live in peace. But the quote was dated 1917.

We did not go over to liberate Afghanistan from the Taliban. We went over to find those responsible for 9/11 and destroy and other threats to the US. Liberating Afghanistan was a nice by-product which made the whole thing look worthwhile.

Thats pretty much what i said. We wanted Al Quiada, and the Taliban was in our way. So we kicked em out to get who we wanted.

You don't need to be American to feel the tragedy of 9/11, just like with Columbine and just like with the recent tragedy in Russia.

Anyone with compassion can tell you this, regardless of their nationality.

I do feel the tragedy but i don't want to denounce the sacredness of this to Americans by telling my connection to the event.

Also if i told you my exact opinion of what happened and why it happened to a forum mostly populated by Americans i know i would get flamed out of here. Especially just after the anniversary of a very emotional event.

You mean the American arrogence that has extended throughout the world, as well as support of the jewish state vs paletinian state, as well as occupation of islamic nations and holy shrines throughout the middle east pissing of militant mulsims????

But I would rather keep this thread nopolitical.

Topics change, no?

I apologize, Jeffery, I didn't catch your point.

Duffman, I know exactly what you are talking about. I praise your good judgment in not posting it here. A lot of people wouldn't take so kindly to it.

May the families of those killed be in peace.

On September 11, 2001 I was in school. They wouldn't tell the students what had happened at first, they just made three anouncments for teachers to check their E-mail *immediately*. There were also a *lot* of PA announcments for kids who had early dissmissal. When more than half of my class had left I realized something was going on, I just didn't know how big it was till I got home and saw my mom watching the news. Once I knew what happened I understood why the principle didn't make an announcement and why there were so many early dismissals. Living just outside D.C. a large percentage of my classmates had parents in the military or goverment and quite a few of them worked at the Pentagon. Luckily, no one from my school lost a loved one, but everyone was pretty shook up. I wouldn't want the anniversary of so many people's deaths, americans and non-americans, to become another day off of school either. Nor do I ever want to meet the person who would make that desicion.

At the time of the attacks, I was at my Gran's house eating lunch.

I saw the pictures on the news, but I didn't truly comprehend what happened until a few days later.

The logic of someone wanting to hijack a plane and crash into a skyscraper, killing thousands of innocent lives escapes me. I'm sure they has some sort of reason but whatever it was just doesn't justify what they did.

Jeff: That list of all the dead. It really makes the point. The best way of putting it. It made me realise what happened on 9/11 more than I ever have before.

Walrus: Be more considerate in the future.

Jeffery

Until you read a list such as that, and realise how long it takes, and just how many people it is, it's hard to think how many people it really is.

For most of you, think of it this way.

How many people are in youe school???

Altough 6-7 posts doesn't seem like that many names considering a name is so small...that really meant alot. Thanks Jeff.
I was just in my house about ready to go to school when my brother woke me up. We couldn't even move. Our school didn't do much because they didn't think k-5th graders could handle that. My friends all treated it like a joke I wasn't taking that to well. I try to be mature for my age and no.. I just couldn't take that I must of blacked it out becasue I try not to remeber that stuff All I remember was my mom and my brother waking me up to watch the news.. I just wanted thank you all for remebering this day..
My spelling may be horrible but this comes form the softest part of me, my heart. I believe that nationality doesn't even really matter wether it was, Asia, North America, South America, It really doesn't matter on that day it didn't matter where it happened every country i think should feel that way. That if thousands of 'Their' Citzens lost their lives I think they would care more..Either way you should care jsut as much for every other person in the world not jsut your neighbors or your family..

i was in . . . 9th grade 1st period classic drama class when the first plane hit the tower, i remember the teacher getting a call on the class phone and she looked all worried and said "i cant tell you what happened, but its terrible" . . .then we had some big assembly where the principal talked and told us what happened, and after we were told to go home . . . i thought it was pretty cool at the moment, cuz i had no idea what the trade center was at that time, so i think "cool, no homework, basically no school, this is pretty cool" then i go home and turn on the TV to watch some crappy daytime TV and on every single channel were just shots of the planes crashing into the towers, then i think "shit, this blows, heh" . . . and thats when it hit me, that something big happened and there were all theses terror threats and all . . . bla bla bla, that just sucks

I just want to say something, 9/11 was a horrific thing and we should all grieve for the loss of thousands of innocent lives and we should never forget what occured, btu it is a far cry from the most horrific event in history, where is the thread for bloody sunday, or all those terrible events that led to the deaths of many times that of 9/11?

I know, I'm new, but I couldn't help myself...

The idea that no one would ever attack the WTC just because it was busy...

I've had the displeasure of meeting someone who filled me in on what they thought (not that opinions are bad, just THIS opinion was). As he said (his opinion, not mine), Muslims are usually good people, everyone else is like a cancer to this world. Tell, me, when you get the flu, do you try to get rid of it as fast as you can, or do you feel bad for the little flu viruses (sp?) in your system and try to work with them to achieve mutual peace? When you are no longer considered to be human, merely sub-human, or worse, a cancer, people do not care about your life, only the ending of your life (especially if many of you can be killed at once). The Pentagon? That's obvious-killing our defenses, or at least trying to.

On American arrogance...

While in Korea, I spoke with one of the Koreans I worked with. He said he didn't really care about a bunch of rich Americans dying. They weren't Korean, just a bunch of arrogant Americans. Big deal, right? They deserved it. I showed him a list of names, pointed to one (Micheal Noeth, if you want to know) and mentioned he had been a best friend of mine once. A different name had caught his eye, however, Chin Sun Pak. "Korean?!", he asked. I told him I didn't know, but it was VERY possible, considering that it's a Korean sort of name. All of a sudden, he was upset about the events that happened on 9-11. So, tell me, just how is it that it's always about American arrogance, never arrogance on anyone else's part. Look in the mirror before pointing the finger at 'them' every time. I'd be lying if I said that no American has ever been arrogant, but isn't it also a lie to say ONLY Americans have been arrogant?

Well, there's my 2 cents...just something to think about. I'm not asking anyone to wholeheartedly agree with me, just asking you to reconsider some of the things posted here.
