Someone would have to make a program/spread sheet keeping track of each battle, and having ss's with stats in the to back it up after every battle. It would become very hard.

It would become the responsibility of the participant I'd believe, just make a table in Word or Works, or a spreadsheet in excel with gains and losses. And take a ss of every win, I do anyways (against golds that is)

Twice a week the organizer just has to /stat all players, and form the table, then post results.

But whoever cheats the best will win.

Yeah, this is way too open to cheating.

Sorry. Je n'aime pas.

The risk of opponents who cheat is there no matter what, tourney or no tourney. Due to the format, however, the cheater would need to keep doing it consistently for a month, which adds to the risk of being caught at it.

It is not like we're playing for money or lives here. If someone wants to tarnish his name with a title that he has not truly earned, so be it. May he long be remembered as the "winner." It's sad, though, to see a tournament flop before it starts, not because of cheaters in it but because true players balk at the thought that cheaters might participate and prevail.

I considered the TAO Race as this format avoids the classic problem some tournaments have had - your designated opponent is simply not online, which leads to procrastination, lack of enthusiasm, and finally, the tournament fading into non-existence. Here there is no designated opponent, so that particular risk becomes a non-issue. Admittedly, the risk of poor sportsmanship is more real here than in a classic elimination.

The other ways to avoid that problem are a one-day tournament (or at least, one that takes place under a brief, designated time), and a tournament that takes place between teams rather than individuals, whether it is a team tourney or a battle royale. If the "contestant" is a group of five players, any of which may step up to the challenge, it is 25 times as likely for a bout to be feasible as it would be in a regular cup system or round robin. If bouts between any teams qualify, it is easier still, though identifying who is in an eligible opponent and who isn't could get a bit confusing.

Something like that could certainly be tried for size, but for now - TAO Race it is. Hopefully it happens, despite the apprehension some feel, and spread.

Unless you setup your own stat system, then made a spreadsheet and talied up the wins and losses... still could be a race.
