well im pretty excited about this, seeing as how i live about 45 miles away in Portland, OR. Do you guys think it will be as big as teh eruption in 80'? I do. theer is supposed to be magma as well. its is going to be tizzight! My city will most likely be covored in ash liek it was the 1st time, but i just cant get over the fact there is a live volcano in our very own backyard!
what do u guys think? excited? nervous [if u live by it]? curious?

I'm not worried at all. I live in Vancouver, WA... so it is very unlikely that I will suffer direct negative effects.
I would actually like to be closer when it decides to burst.

The eruption as predicted should be pretty mild. It will be nothing like the '80 eruption. Then one in 1980 had a solid cap over the magma well, which caused pressure to build and explode.
The current formation has many steam vents already, so the pressure is not building to anywhere near as high of a level.
But you should go and take a look at it. It will be a neat experience.

Wait, what? I live on top of Mt. St. Helen. Why haven't I heard of this?

the 80's eruption was all ash. lots and lots of ash. though it was enourmously loud and will probably be a bigger explosion then this one predicted to happen anyday now, the one happening soon is thought to have streaming magma. so in my opinion bothe will be equally cool. 1 had big BOOM! the other has warm goo. the stuff facinates me to no end.
and i would go to the museum jeff, but i think ill just watch from my house on a clear day. the lines are as long as The Matterhorn at Disneyland. takes 3 hours just to get in.

Another fina example of tekman spam. I guess being a dumbass in DR's thread wasn;t enough, you needed to continue it to another thread with a serious topic.
The '80 eruption had more than ash. There was a lava flow. But there was a lot of ash, which was due to the fact that the entir side of the mountain was blown away.
meat.eater
10-10-2004, 05:34 PM
which is why ash covered portland, it blew up to the southern end. and the lava flow is predicted to be much much bigger.
Jeffery
10-10-2004, 05:39 PM
Lava flows are less dangerous. They move relatively slow compaired to pyroclastic flows.

the city "St. Helens" is not in the same vicinity as the mountain. They're in different states.

Are you guys nuts!? Why would you actually want a volcano to erupt in your backyard? You do realize that with the "cool fireworks" there will be wildfires and other destruction. Thats like building your house in the floodplains and saying "jee I hope the levy breaks so my house will get washed away"

1) You're an idiot to build your house in the floodway
2) You're an idiot to build your house on a volcano
3) The eruption will be very cool.

Yes, if you build your house in one of those areas then its not the smartest thing, however land is cheap in the floodplains.
You say the eruption will be cool? Cool like an earthquake or hurricane cool? Cool like the thousands of Florida residents without homes cool? How is a natural disaster cool? You realize that regardless where you live, this eruption will affect you. Your tax dollars will be diverted from building roads or improving schools so that people can recover and build thier next homes on another active volcano right?
meat.eater
10-10-2004, 08:17 PM
teh eruption will be very cool. and destruction of land is part of the process. there is nothing we can do about that. you wanna try stopping an active volcano? didnt think so.
we also arent just going to let it run like a maniac. we do have firecrews manning the mountain every day. they're their to prevent massive fires and such when it does erupt. its not like were going into this thing knowing its going to happen and not doing anything about it. it will be very interesting. the technology we have now-a-days is amazing.
dag yo nothing will come all the way up to redmond washington
:( but i have a nice veiw of mt rainer if that one blows up :-D i can see it from my room!

so ur hoping it will be gone when u are going to climb it so u will just have to hike a couple miles instead of raise elevation?

it would be really cool if the mountian were leveled then it would make it hiking up to the peak rather easy

The current lava flow is small and very subtle.
The glow of the magma is quite pretty though.

A new type of stone is not being formed. They are talking about what is refeered to as the fin. They are also calling it the "21st century dome"

im kinda dissapinted it just fizzled out instead of build up then BOOM, even though that might not have been good for the museum and the non-stop people half a mile away.

Always look on the bright side, meat.
I've actually been following the story as well. I live in Washington.
Hell, I even remember when she blew in 1980. It was all over the television and, being only seven years old, I was glued to it.

Last year in science i had to do a report on Mt. St. Helens and i found that it was very interesting researching all of the effects that it had on the surrounding wildlife and forests but there were a whole lot of trajeties.
