I like being called an Indian more than a Native American. But I am only 1/8 anyways, so it just adds a sexy tan to me and spider sense.

That would be correct, he thought he was in India, and named the indeginous peoples Indians. I know T3km already said it, but i felt like saying it again.

Well, now everyone knows that. As for why the name stuck longer than 3 seconds I do not know, but it did. It is hard when I want to talk about someone from India, I always have to say India Indians.
Jeffery
10-10-2004, 06:06 PM
Actually, you are both slightly wrong.
He thought he was in the East Indies, which included India and the Islands that are now part of Indonesia.

Incidentally, Columbus was a tyrant. Evil. He "discovered" America by mistake, and the Vikings got here first. He doesn't deserve even a minute, let alone a day. More like an anti-day. Ugh !!!

You want to hear something even funnier??
America is named after a guy who, after years of investigation, NEVER made it to the shores of North America first. He counterfitted his ship logs!
*edited to note he was not first to get here.

Yes.
Vespuci did eventually get to the Americas, but long after he first claimed he did.

What I want to know is how did Columbus become synonymous with the killing of Native americans. He DID discover N. America because he charted and documented it. After discovery, he left and lived a peaceful life back in europe. He did not go around shooting people or coughing on them, that was left to the Spanish explorers that followed. Thinking that Columbus killed the native americans is the same as thinking Marco Polo led to a communist regime in Afghanistan.

You better check out columbus some more. He did not return and live peacefully in Europe as soon as he got over here.

Something had to be made from nothing once in a while.
Hopefully people will research Columbus more closely, and not think he was such a great guy.

Well first off, you cant really take an objective view of facts from an article with a title as biased as that one right?
Secondly, before anyone says "But columbus did return several times" yes I know this, I'm just saying he didnt build a palace of human bones on the beach from all the Indians he killed. He was a merchant and did what merchants do and that is travel across the sea to trade in goods.
As this article points out, there was mass genocide of the natives, but it wasnt from Columbus, but rather from other Spaniard explorers

So you choose to ignore his actions taken in the caribean, which was documented in Columbus's own logs?
doubledown
10-11-2004, 02:37 PM
look I'm not saying he was an angel, but he is not the demon that people are now trying to make him out to be. Were his actions right? No, but if not him then the same would have happened with the next guy. Columbus was no better or worse than what was standard for that day and age.

Hold on now!
I think we're all being a bit too critical of Chris Columbus.
I mean, he's no Spielberg but he directed some solid movies like Mrs. Doubtfire, Home Alone and Harry Potter.
He's also responsible for writing such 80's classics as Gremlins, The Goonies and Young Sherlock Holmes.
For God's sake, people, lighten up!:)

He wrote young sherlock holmes? Nice.
Anyway, Columbus was a very big dipshit. I could fill you in on his exploits, but it seems like Jeffery's got that covered already. So I'll content myself with hating Columbus... and Beethoven. That bastard.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote Sherlock Holmes. Columbus was involved in the movie. And true, Columbus did some nasty things, but how come nobody violently attacks Cortez, for example, who was waaaaaaaaaaaaayyy worse thsn Columbus came close to being?

Because Cortez isn't as associated with the United States as Columbus is.

Young Sherlock Holmes, Frank. Young Sherlock Holmes. (w00t! all caps!)
Cortez was very bad, but everybody knows it. Most people I know have been trained/brainwashed to think that Columbus was a great guy. He wasn't by any reckoning.

When was Cotez Day a national holiday????
People don;t hate Columbus more, but they do think that having a national holiday for a guy who not only didn;t discover America, but slaughtered and enslaved thousands of natives is something that is just not right.
