I think it'd be pretty cool, and really it wouldn't be all that hard. Just pull out a calculator, some graph paper, some dice, and things to mark your guys and there you go. That way, you could check out formations easily, and try out new units, and play your friends when the servers are full/down.

I should do that, and come up with rules for playing this game on a hex-map. I tend to prefer hexmaps over square ones, the hexes give you more movement options.

Ah, but TAO with a hexmap is not truly TAO

Actually, TAO reminds me a whole lot of a board game I have called "Lionheart." You may want to check it out. You'd be surprised how similar it is in some ways. It's even customizable!
