View Full Version : Offering a draw

Ok, I just finished a game against a gold on the Banff server (where I am a grey). After defeating some greys that challenged me on Armageddon, I thought I'd see what it is like from their perspective again.
He had 2 scouts, a dragon, 3 knights, a cleric, a lit ward and 2 witches.
After a long hard battle, it was down to me with a scout, pyro, lit ward, and cleric. My opponent (who will remain nameless) had a scout by his lit ward and his cleric. After exchanging fire, I had his scout down to where my pyro could finish him off on my next turn.
Now there were many key blocks in this game on both sides...in the end, I felt that the game had been determined by blocking. I was probably a bit lucky on the blocking front, and my opponent missed a couple of key blocks at the end resulting in the death of his dragon (though they were both side blocks). Being a good sport, I offered a draw. It was just a new grey account I had made, and I could care less about the record...but I know golds generally care quite a bit. So, I passed...he passed...I passed...
He shot and killed my pyro.
Now I went on to win the game anyways. He never acknowledged playing for a draw, but it was clear I had the game won...my pyro was ready to go and his scout was at 5 health. What is the proper etiquette here? Is it bad form to offer a draw on my part?
It just seems to me the proper thing to do is either accept the draw, or concede the game gracefully.
All in all it was a great game, very close, and a lot of fun (if a bit nerve-wracking). The ending just left a bad taste in my mouth. He never agreed to the draw, true, and I suppose I can't fault him for playing to win. And now I'm just rambling a bit, so I'll stop.
Just one last note: golds, play as a grey once in a while. It's interesting playing again without 2 scouts, golems, and the dragon. And, it's nice to prove, at least to yourself, that greys do have a chance against golds if they play their cards right

Grays can beat golds. I played a gold member once packing a dragon and a mud golem, and I won anyway. I think one bad move early on put him in a disadvantageous position.
On the other hand, I just played a guy (screen name Badass) with two witches, and got my ass kicked because he did a good job of surrounding his cleric.

Heh, I've already played as a grey and beat a couple golds, I'm happy with that.
o0 I only draw if the game results in a draw by the system rules o0 I don't intentionally 'draw'

It's up to you, but I think you should have just finished him off. I only go with a draw if forced into it, which has happened 1 game out of 100 played.

I have never given a draw. Unless they truly cannot continue the fight it can end only so if nither on is willing to risk loss for victory.
I have taken three, and all were one unit left and it aint comin out or gone after.

I once gave a win to a newbie that was nice, tried hard and listened to advice. I don't usually show sympathy if someone says they have to go. I've gotten losses that way myself. If they can't finish the game then they should be willing to take the loss, IMHO.

That was nice to give it to newb, but I agree that a dual (with the exception of if you come anywhere close you will lose) should be fought to an eventual end.

How do you offer a draw? Never taken the time to think about it and I don't see any terribly obvious answer.

the rule is: if both players consequtively pass 6 times (3 times each) the game is an automatic draw.
So, the only way to give a draw is for both players to agree to pass 3 times. This should never be given to a person who doesn't look trustworthy, because they may just have you pass then get an extra turn advantage.

I gave a draw to a gray once. I joined his game but he didn't feel like playing a gold. He politely asked for a draw, but I ended up convincing him to play as much as he can - I was going to win anyway, but I gave him the draw when he was down to his cleric and assassin (and I my ward/3 knights/scout/cleric/golem/dragon).

i have noticed some gold members seem to think they are invincible with all their special units and extra units and don't really know how to play and fall easily into traps.
but the gold members who do know how to play, generally wipe the floor with greys which makes it increadable unfun unless they get very unlucky.
and don't get me started on the ones with double clerics

personaly im a gray and i dont intend on going gold (i dont like to pay for online games) and i think that golds sould not be able to fight grays mostly because golds have most the time won before the game begins with the unit advantage and grays dont stand a chance not that grays always lose to golds but i think theres to much of an advantage for golds ok ill shut up now (sorry bout the spelling errors)

I'd just like to say to Caanon, that your signature's awesome.
And to add to the thread, I agree that golds shouldn't be able to fight greys mainly because of what recently happened to me...I just got done fighting some guy, don't remember his name now, and it was a close game, so he wanted to play again after he rearranged some stuff. I obviously knew what he was going to move around, so I move a couple of my own things around. My set up was going to be horrible unless it was against him, but I knew I would just change it after the next game. We agreed on like the 9th floor, I see him clicking around down there, so I start clicking trying to get on the same square as him. The first or second time I click, this gold shit clicked on the same square as me, and I get screwed into playing him.
He obviously won cause of my dumb set up, and it sucked ass cause I was going for a perfect record to get on the top ranking list. I was 33-0 up until that point, and that would have been around 70th place or so. But being 33-1 would probably knock me down to about 95th place. So because this dumbass gold member wanted an easy win, I get completely screwed over with my record.
After thinking about it for a bit, it wasn't too bad to have 1 loss. The top on The Great Lakes has like 11 losses, so it's not too bad to have just 1 for now. Anyways...I'm up to 45-1, so hopefully by the next time they update rankings, I'll be on there.
Well, I'm done bitching here now. Good luck with your battles. Everybody have a Merry Christmas (if you're Jewish then happy Hanukah).

I really think grey have no chance in front of a gold player... unless you got some drop or gold member is really noob ( but i don't think so). Trust me, if i never have gold acount, no grey will beat me

When it comes down to draws, it depends on the people involved. I just drawed a match against another gold after a long, close match that still could've gone either way (though not easily). To me it was just a matter of mutual respect for the other and the lack of bloodlust. If you give one out, you're holding your hand out to your enemy. Many wouldn't think twice of slicing that hand off at the opportunity.
As for greys and golds, I can see the idea behind not letting a gold jump into a grey game, but no reason not to allow a grey to play a gold. Many seem to want to and it's a good way to draw more people into gold accounts (which is probably a major goal of TAO).
Of course, this could probably all be solved with allowing private games, now that I think about it.

Someone (I'm not going to type his SN) was very upset because he was having his ass handed to him from my dragon. He was a was a gray. He told me to "Fuck off" with my gay units. I simply replyed that if he was loosing to "Gay" units, it's pretty sad. Then, he told me he would annihilate me if I used gray units. We did a draw, I changed my lineup to gray units only (I didn't use two scouts either), and played him again. Once again, his ass was handed to him on a silver platter. Heh, you bet he was mad!
However, that doesn't mean that grays can't beat golds. It's very possible. I admit to losing to a few grays myself.
