View Full Version : How should the game and forum be moderated post-DR?

Just wondering what people think of the separating the game mods and forum mods idea. Say having 2 mods per server with disconnection of spammers ability, and about 4 forum mods. Or should we stick with the old method of having 4 mods on the forum and the game, with no particular server mods?

Guess I'll cross post, since this is pretty much my exact thread from yesterday.

How about a thread where people can discuss how and when they have moderated in the past? Maybe some real ideas and not just self-promotion can come out of it.

For myself, I have moderated a number of boards.
The most interesting and well developed was the UOStratics boards. There, the game mods were seldom the same as the board mods, and the mods were generally broken out by either shard or specialty.

Some thoughts:

-- Uber-Mod: This mod has the power to admin all forums.
-- Category Mod: This mod is assigned one of the 5 broad areas (community, warfare, gold, server, development)
-- Specialty Mod: This mod is assigned to specific areas, a good example being a particular server.

You generally need 3-4 people per. They dont have to be on 24/7, but between the 4 of them they should provide a good patch of daily coverage. Since TAO seems to have many worldwide players, you can probably get pretty good coverage.

You also need people with a very good sense of what is right and wrong for TAO. Something you do not like is not necessarily wrong. Something that everyone likes, may be very wrong. Bills would in some sense provide that guidance, but the person should also have some ethical expectations.

The Mods need to have a private user protected area, if they dont already. That area would have the Mod rules, the applications, the acceptances, and provide an area for mods to discuss particular threads and how to handle certain situations.

Uber-Mods should be respectful of letting category and specialty mods provide their own coverage when they can.
Uber-Mods should not immediately correct everything, just because they can. They should HELP bolster the reputation of, and empower, the lesser mods.

I'm getting tired, but here is a couple points here....

GAME mods:
Game mods and Forum mods in no way have to be the same. In fact, you often DONT want them to be the same.
You want the game mods, in the game.
You want forum mods in the forums.
To ask someone to do both is to burn out your help very quickly.
To ask both of non-employed individuals also risk some situations realized in UO.

I would prefer the second. Mainly because I'm sure there are more people like me that support TAO but just visit the forum.

the thing is...if there are only 2 mods per server

that means that 1 or the other of those 2 mods will have to be around pretty much all of the time

that is difficult

having 4 "all around" mods is much more simple...there is a better chance that 1 of those 4 mods will be around at any given time than 1 of 2 on each server

But the 4 mods we had were pretty much one server only. You need people who are either on all 3 servers or some people who on are one server for each server.

And the mods didn't have booting powers either. No matter what technique of moderating they try, they HAVE to get booting powers for mods. I don't want to have to go and get Bills every time someone spams up the lobby.

If you don't like the idea of 2 mods per server, make it 4 per server. And have 4 forum mods. The only limit to how many mods you have is how many people you have on the server that you could trust to not abuse their powers.

I voted the second option for two reasons:

I think it takes a different kind of skill to moderate games than it takes to moderate forums.
Mods need to be pretty much server based, because mods may have "home servers" which they prefer to remain in.

Alright how about this idea.
5 mods.
3 server/forum mods
2 strictly forum mods

That covers everything right?
And the server/forum mods could rotate on the Rev. server since all golds have access to it. 5 isn't a lot but it would keep this forum clean from spam. At first I thought maybe 1 mod dedicated to the forums but that makes sort of a lone ranger job. So two to give some sort of balance. That's just my two cents.

I think we should have the forum mods, and then 2 or 3 in game mods, for each server.

The forum mods, could be ppl, whom are into the forums alot. Also taking place in the forums alot, so if problems araise, they'll more than likely be there.

Same thing goes with on server mods. I think the two servers mods on each server, should be ppl, that are responisble and are online alot.

I'm not really up to the forum modding, but if needed, i'd do my best for the job. However as far as moding on the game, I could easily do this, considerating that I'm ALWAYS online on army, banff, and GL, and including rev. I think that the ability to d/c spammers is a good idea as well. However, no matter what we think...this ends up in bills hands, but this should give him a good idea of who would be a good mod, and who wouldn't.

Exactly, either way it all ends up in Bills' hands. We just have the simple suggestions from the TAO community.
