When Bills asked us to submit new designs, I think he meant for us to figure out how the hell you do that. Well, HTML codeheads, I did.

Which is more than anyone else did. I actually expected it to be an externally referenced style sheet, but given the way that PHP works I guess it's ok.
Not everyone knows that the ability to edit lies in the source, but thanks for trying to make me look like an idiot. Try again later.
Also, you'll note that I did in fact edit a bit of it and posted a screenshot, so copy and paste is not all I did. Thanks, have a good night.

EDIT: Also, I am going to do a bit of research and figure out what each class does. If you figure out an element, id, or class, will you do us a favor and post it here so we can have a definitive dictionary of class?
I have a feeling that these attributes are posted somewhere online, but seeing as though the VB people are stuck up and only care about money, I don't know how accessible it is. I haven't tried to look for an index, but if anyone finds one, again, please post here.
I edited this into my first post, and reposted here for attention. It's important.
Also, xerent, I'd love to see what you come up with. I'm sure it will look great, based on your previous graphical design work.

A few more keystrokes, much less RAM hogging.
Ctrl-S, click, enter.
Save, click on the HTML file, open.
The problem with previewing in WYSIWYG editors is that they have their own renderer and it sucks. Or you could set it to preview in a browser, but I only know how to do that in GoLive, not DW.

Actually, I think you can just type .html at the end and it will save as an html file rather than .txt
At least that worked for CSS. I made this CSS document (http://mercury.walagata.com/w/tamadrumer/shout.css) for a shout box and just typed .css at the end instead of .txt and it worked. But then again, I just have super powers.

That sounds really good!
I haven't really got started on my design yet, but I was just using a combination of #fff, #000, #111, and #222. I want to keep a sort of gradient look for the header at the top of the page though, sort of like trufflshfl's (whose I like very much.)
I also just found this: http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/main/css_intro
I am going to open up Photoshop (pity that it's on my Windows machine) and start messing with the CSS in Notepad. I'll keep updates going, too.

Any updates so far?
What I am doing now is importing some CSS styles from the front page, because if you look, the font styles are distinctly different (bigger, different typeface.)
After that, I plan on studying the class elements and making a couple 1-pixel column GIFs for header gradients. Of course, they won't be mustardesque.
The buttons can come last, because once the colors are settled, it should just require importing and replacing different graphics with the same name.

You know to use archive.org to get those old images, right?
Anyway, it looks pretty cool, although I don't think the new AIM logo is present. It still has some nasty white artifacts (the matte) but other than that I like where it is going. The one pixel yellow border can probably go, too.
I just realized that someone made a mistake with the CSS on the main TAO site. The link attribute "a.hover" should always come last. That's why the links were sometimes underlined and sometimes not. Weird, huh?
Bills if you want the new style sheet, then you can ask me for it, but I will post it with my revisions of the forum, too.
This is nasty, trying to combine the two different style sheets! Thank goodness all that was needed were the top navigation links!
Back to work!

Just a sudgestion for everyone, since I think I saw this on another one (or two) layouts now. I think there shouldn't be as big a difference between the color of the actualy post, and the color of the left side with all the user information. But then again, I really don't feel like trying my hand at making any of this (maybe I will later... meh) so do whatever. Just something that sticks out in my head.

Here is what I have so far:
The master CSS file is here: http://filebox.vt.edu/users/upton731/TAO/TAO_forum/forumstyles.css
I have three examples below:
Forum View, which is what you first see when you go to the TAO forums. This also looks very similar to what one would see if he clicked General Discussion:
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/upton731/TAO/TAO_forum/index.html
Thread View, where I used this thread as an example:
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/upton731/TAO/TAO_forum/thread.html
Reply View, which is self-explanatory:
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/upton731/TAO/TAO_forum/reply.html
Note that the images have not been altered. I'll do that when I can, sometime this week. The plan is to import all of the old images, so, Meletus, I might have to mooch of your research into that subject! :)
Let me know what you think. I spent awhile delving into the CSS classes, and I left some untouched. I am kind of tired right now, so if you guys could do me a favor and thoroughly look over my design, that would help. I can change a great deal of things in this design, obviously. Remember that the images change is coming.
Enjoy!

Also, truffleshfl, the more I look at yours the more I think about how similar our ideas were. You too, Meletus.
Maybe we could combine ideas?
Truffleshfl, I think your dark to light gradient makes the bars look indented, and I'm more of an outie kind of guy. Light to dark kind of puffs it out and gives it the appearance of a 3d bar. We can let the forumgoers decide. :)
Meletus, I think your image work is headed in the right direction. If you need help, let me know, but if you can handle that and you don't mind me using the new images, that would be awesome!
I can't wait to put the images into my design. I think it will be the coup de grāce to my efforts and I am so excited. One day of this golden crap is more than enough!

Yeah but that's so tedious... why not replace the existing images? That way, you can't find and replace a bit of HTML that you didn't mean to delete. Anyway, if you are a member of those forums, is there any way you can download and save all the smililes and thread icons from the reply page? I am not a member of any other vB forums, so I can't do that. That would be a huge help if you could!
Anyway, I have replaced more of the images that I could reach.
Here are the pages:

Anyway, if you are a member of those forums, is there any way you can download and save all the smililes and thread icons from the reply page? I am not a member of any other vB forums, so I can't do that. That would be a huge help if you could!
Yeah I have them all saved on my server already.. It is tedious.. but once you have the great thing all done.. You just do a save as. and poof the whole website.. images and all rest on your desktop.. All you have to do is delete the "http://www.ifoundthisimage.com" out and upload.
If you want to just replace/overwrite the image that is cool too and can be done from this. EASIER by far in the long run... but since in each version they change the names of the pictures I just didn't do that here for the simple demostration..
I think the current site color scheme is fine now.. I do like truff's gradient.. and we just need the old pictures back.. and some arrow and online button updating..

Thank goodness they changed this. Seeing that friggin' yellow was pissing me off. This is a little better but the white is a bit annoying.

All the old images should exist on the server.. depending on how bills uploaded the new forum... and if not as I stated.. I have found all of them and saved them.. smilies.. and buttons..

Oh, I thought those were for if the poster is online. That indicator is located in the bottom left of the poster's information, to the left of the post.
Meletus, is there any way you can put those smilies, icons and whatnot on a server and allow access to them? I'd really appreciate that, so that I can grab them and use them in my design.
Also, note that the old icons (located beneath the reply box) have returned.

I can do two things.. Almost done working on it... I will post a link to the zip file which will have all the images.. and also provide an online folder with all those images live.. I'll Pm ya when I have that ready.

Is there a way to lock margins? The thing I find the most annoying about this forum is the fact that the size of the post changes with the size of the avatar and signature. I think it would look better if everything was unified.

Excellent! Thank you very much.
EDIT: All save three ( really happy, sad, normal smiley ) smilies have been fixed! Yay!
Also, why is there a limit of two images per post? That means we can't post a triple grin!!

This "new" forum version has SO many bells and whistles.. You can control everything... how many minium chars... how many pictures.. links.. total text allowed..
One could easily spend hours-* setting it JUST right to accommodate the ways of the past and the preferences of the members..
For two clients... OH MY F_ING GOD.. I didn't think anyone was more picky then this community.. I guessed wrong... er twice.

So far the welcome, reply, and the profile pages are done. All that is left is getting all the buttons done, the reply page, and smilies.

And for shock value, to make you notice one thing, it it a common tactic. But for everyday use, it sucks.
Personally, I would like to see the forums in TAO game colros, with buttons that look like they are in the game. Maybe even use the game buttons themselves in some way.

this is kind of a bump I think, but I have a relevant question. How hard do you think it would be to allow an option in the user profile to change the forum colors. Then in the code, let the colors reference that user's choice, or default to ... a default.
Does anyone understand what I'm saying?

You basically want to view your own forum colours?
Glamdring
11-06-2004, 12:55 PM
basically yes. Very basically. It's not so much that I want to view my own, it's that I've never ever seen a color template in a forum or blog that everyone was satisfied with. I was more wondering how hard it would be to set it up that way. If it wasn't too hard, I might even do it to my own page.

Go to www.bgforums.tk and register. Go to your profile and scroll down to where it says "Board Style:" change that around and tell me if that is what you mean.
