View Full Version : Reputation Scales

EDIT 1: Ok as of now this thread has no starting post. I decided to edit out what i wrote because i don't know how the reputation scales work yet. When i do I'll rewrite my first post. Have a nice day :).
EDIT 2: Because noone can see someones reputation other than see your own reputation I don't object anymore. There won't be prejudice. However it does serve the purpose to inflate heads. I've changed from morally against it to... meh.

Not sure about this. I just repped you, but can not find a place to see your rep.
I think only the recipient can see who repped them and what it says.
Also, you can not rep the same person over and over. You have to spread it around a little.
Seems you start with a base of 10 rep points, and eah post starts on an even scale.

In your profile there is somehting that says referrals... But mine still says 0. Perhaps the button is there but it isn't working yet, or takes a while to register.

Click on your own rep button in the first post of this thread.
Jeffery

Reps (BTW- they are the scales in the lower left of each persons post) seem to work like this.
You an "Rep" someones post. Rate it good or bad, and why. This gives or takes Rep points away from the user.
But only THEY can seem to see the rep points. To see your own rep, click the button in one of your own posts. It also shows all comments about your post that people have made while repping you. It does NOT show the name of the person though.
In the end, I think people will screw with the system more then use it properly though.

if you click on the little scales next to someone's post(not your own) you can give them positive or negative feedback, which then influences their reputation, which is then accessible from the little green rectangle. If you click on your own, it tells you your balance of fame.
Jeffery
11-02-2004, 12:04 PM
Me and duff already taled about this. And if you click on your user cp you see youir total rep, and recent comments. Also, others can not see your rep, only you.
Jeffery

Me and duff already taled about this. And if you click on your user cp you see youir total rep, and recent comments. Also, others can not see your rep, only you.
ALSO....
You cannot see who wrote the comments. And you CAN see the general idea of someones reputation by holding the pointer over their green rectangle, just not the exact total.
Edit: all please move their post to the other thread on this...nothing to see here, move along....

yeah, people will abuse it. it might be an idea if only people with x posts could access it?
some kind of filter at least, to stop people making countless new acounts just to get their own reputation up on their main account

because you can see the script assigned to whatever category you or anyone else falls into, this could be fun, depending on what the vb people have put in there. So far i have seen three different levels: at 9 points i saw that I was an unknown factor at this point, at ten points with at least 1 poisitive i saw that i was on a distinguished road. before receiving any it said I had a friend factor of zero LOL.

Jeffery
11-02-2004, 01:00 PM
Does it show you who added to your reputation?
No. But if you click the scales on your own post, it gives you current rep, and any rep comments made on that post. If you go to your usercp, all recent rep comments are listed.

When repping someone you can only rep them once per some time period.
Also, there is a limit to how many times you can Rep total per day. I think the number is either 10 or 15 people.

The reputation is meaningless here. At best, another person can get a general sense of your rep by hovering the mouse over the little greeen square below your avatar.
No one can ever see your actual Rep number, or rep left to you by another.
In the end, I think it is a new toy people will goof off with, and then forget is there. I don;t think it will have ANY effect, good or bad, on the forum or how people do things.

Click on the scales below that to see your rep points, and any comments left on that partucular post.

Yes, but you can only bring down their rep once per some unknown time period. That limits repeated bad reps. And since the ACTUAL rep is hidden from everyone, no one knows what anyones overall rep truly is.
Besides, in a couple of weeks, everyone will have rediculously high reps, and one or two bad ones will not affect them at all.

I acually thought it was sort of a PM system until I realised it was anonymous, I was wondering why no one replied... Relating it to the green dots isn't evident either, if you didn't know the green dots are sort of a reputation meter.
Upon further reading on the VBA forums it turns out to be a much more complicated feature with reputation altering points (basically if you have more reputation then the reputation you give matters more) and abilities to join different groups. Overall it gave me a headach and took me ages with my 56k (god I hate 56k) but here is what I got:
vBulletin's user reputation system provides a way of rating users based on the quality of their posts. Users on your forums can add or subtract reputation points from other users by clicking the reputation link in their posts. You can set restrictions on the giving and taking away of reputation points by users in your vBulletin options.
User reputations allow the users in your community to tell vBulletin which users are quality and which users are not. And in response to user feedback, vBulletin has the ability to label and reward users for the quality of their posts, as is indicated by their reputation.
You can label quality users by defining reputation levels in the User Reputation Manager. User reputation levels work very similar to user titles and user ranks in that they are an indicator of status that are displayed next to names in posts.
You can reward quality users by creating promotions on the Promotions page. Promotions are used to change a user's group memberships when they meet certain conditions, one of which can be their reputation level. Because forum permissions can be controlled with group memberships, a user's reputation in conjunction with promotions can be used to control a user's forum permissions. And so by using a combination of user reputations, promotions, and group permissions, you can enable your community to reward and punish good and bad posters on your forums.
Promotions are whatever you create them to be. If you setup a promotion that promotes users to a specific group, then you tell users that if you reach a certain reputation level then they will be granted the permissions granted by the usergroup.
So not quite your PM system as it goes deeper then that. I'm not sure which of these features apply to our forums though so don't ask me.
Which brings me to wonder what DID happen to the quick PM button and why does the reputation now show in the main user CP window instead of private messeges?
As long as no onen places too much importance too it it could be fun I guess?
What about the anonymity of it, it can be disabled should it ?
Jeffery

Snarr, click your mouse on someone name above their avatar, and a list of links appear, one of which is PM.
The PM's do appear in the UserCP, but as a link jow, with their own pages. The reputation shows there so that you can see the last few Reps you have, and what threads they are from.
I do not see this being a seriously used system, mainly based on the maturity level of the users here. Bad reps will be used just to mess with people, and people will beg for rep (and receive them) for random things, not necesarily just for good posts.
But it IS a nice way to send someone a little side note saying "nice post"
BTW:
* Register Date Factor - longer registered = more power
* Post Count Factor - more posts = more power
* Reputation Point Factor - more reputation points = more power

This is controlled by usergroup. In the Usergroup Manager look in General Permissions and you'll see the option to turn on or off Can See Who Left User Ratings

Takes a while to get used to the new forums, overall I'm very impressed with them, even though as a mod the confuse the hell out of me - I don't seem to be finding anything. I'm looking forward for more of the features they have in store to be applied here.
Now I'm off to rep down Punishment Co. and Ele :p
Jeffery

I have a slight advantage of already being part of a VB3 board elsewhere. They scrapped the rep system, as people just mess with it.
Personally, I think the comments SHOULD have the name attached. If you are leaving a negative response, you should be able to admit it at least.

As far as I know it can only be changed by Bills but like I said I'm having a hard time with the mods options. And even if it CAN be changed by mods it's not up to us to decide but up to Bills alone. Personally I think the anonymity will allow abuse, but to be honest most people including myself haven't been using it very seriously.
Sorry Puni, but you ARE a brat. And sorry Julia but you are a meany, I wanted to close that one and you beat me to it by 20 seconds (though you did seem to take it much more personally then it meant... If it bothered you I'm sorry I guess? Don't worry 'meany' was hardly my serious criticism). And Ele you got what you deserved! And Hassem I'm so NOT sorry for you.
*Sigh* got to get use to spell checking BEFORE I post from now on.

Does anoyomity really matter that much when, as you say, it's one purpose is having a new toy? I mean it's nice to know who voted for you but it doesn't matter.
Jeffery
11-06-2004, 03:04 AM
If is to be useful at all, then taking responsability for your actions is paramount.
If it is a useless toy, then why not just remove it?
Duffman
11-06-2004, 03:14 AM
It's useful is giving someone a thumbs up or down for their post but letting someone know who did it is useless. If a person wants to take responsibility then they can write their name. If someone doesn't want to take responsibility then they don't have too...
Snarr
11-06-2004, 03:21 AM
I don't want to take responsibility for paying the bills, going to university or if I get a girl pregnant. Can I not take it too please?
Meh, I guess this allows more flexibility but people will feel more free to abuse it. Which is not a problem either to be honest. All I'm saying, if it's not anonymous it can actually mean something rather then be a useless toy, but as it stands I doubt it will ever mean something.
Jeffery

And as such, assholes like Kal will just give random negatives, and hence, negate the usefulness of the feature. If a feature is not useful, it's not needed. If you want a n00b forum full of useless features, go visit taoforums.com

What do you gain from Kal giving you negative rep and knowing it from Kal giving you negative rep and not knowing it...
The fact is Anoyomous or not the potential to abuse it is the same. Whether people are going to take responsibilty for who and how they rep should be up to them.
Snarr
11-06-2004, 03:26 AM
I'd hardly qualify it as assholeness, not everyone takes it as serious that's all. I'd hardly call Ele a bitch for saying you ar a brat she's just joking around a bit, and god knows I've been messing too. Get my train of though? Besides the feature has JUST been implemented obviously people will mess with it a bit before regularisation of its use.
Jeffery
11-06-2004, 03:27 AM
The point is, fewer people will act like idiots if their name is attached.
And I would call Kal's behavior assholeness. That's what 90% of his behavior is.

You're obviously not a Freudian thinker. It's a generally except concept that the most effective deterrent is what people think of you and shame. The example used by Freud was that if you were invisible wouldn't you allow yourself to do things that you wouldn't do when you are not invisible just because now no one knew you did it? It's fits beautifully here too.

I suppose it's true... I guess i just see it as different. I don't care who sees me do what. Unless it's criminal.
Just for the record this is what kal said when he repped me: "Nah nah nah nah nah! I made your rep low! That should piss you off!!! Eff greys!! --Kalamady"
Didn't deter him.
Jeffery
11-06-2004, 03:36 AM
That's because, as I said, Kal is an asshole. But normal people are not.
A normal person will feel free to do things even they think is a bit wrong, as long as no one knows they did it. But if they KNOW their name is attached to it, they are much less likely to do it.
Duffman
11-06-2004, 03:41 AM
Point. I haven't seen anyone abuse it yet though. But if abuse does come i would have to agree as say don't make it anoyomous.

Well you never know because you are not faced in the situation, wouldn't you go in the girl's changing room if you could?
Anyway ok Kal does seem a bit of an idiot, I thought he was just joking but it seems his pokes are on a racial basis. But like I said not everyone treats this seriously (yet?) so they joke around with it.
