View Full Version : Forum Rules?

Alot of people seem to get overly frustrated whenever they are banned for acting up, since they recieved no 'official warning', so why not lay down a few rules. If you happen to break one of the rules, you recieve a certain amount of warning points. You would also set a ban limit, maybe 10?
Example:
Current Ban Limit: 10 warning points

Inappropriate Link - 3 Warning Points
Disrespect Towards Staff - 3 Warning Points
Flaming (abuse) - 5 Warning Points
Racist / Prejudice Remark - 5 Warning Points
The first time you're banned you may recieve 1 - 10 days (depending on what your most recent offense was). Each time you get banned the ban limit increases. However, if you go for a week without recieving any warnings then your warn limit goes down one point.
Example:
Fred's Warning Level - 10
Fred's Warning Level After Being Good for 3 Weeks - 7
Fred's Warning Level After Flaming - 12
Now, let's say you get off of your banning, and get warned when you already have 10 warning points, simple. You get banned again.

many of the forums have a warning level built in. vBulletin DOES have a warning hack, that allows warning points to be awarded, and do basically everything you say.

The problem as i see it has nothing to do with the way warning and bannings are handled, i think Mods and Admins are pretty fair about who they have banned (not including several rage bans)

But I for one would like to actually see a set of forum rules for what is and is not allowed. basically, much the same as you listed, laying what is NOT allowed here, and that people violating that may be warned or banned.

Most people KNOW that what they are doing is bannable, but they just don;t care at the time. But an actual list of bannable offenses would make it easier to deal with.

VB3 has a temp ban feature now, ei banned from posting for 3 days...

Jeffery

Yeah, but a list of what is bannable should be made. Most forums have a "Forum Rules" link somewhere in their links.

I actually agree with Jeffery for once. I remember Julia and I discussed this quite some time ago (when she actually was on AIM more often) she was a fan of the idea, I just never got around to posting it in here.

How about we come up with a list here and see how far we get.
Warning
1) No posting of malicious links containing any malware or offensive images.
2) No banners with offensive images.
3) Banners should abide the banner limits set forth.
4) Keep discussions pg-13 and below. This means an occasional curse word may be edited out, but rampant cursing may result in suspension.
5) Rampant spamming for no purpose. (This means many threads/posts with no content or malicious content.)
6) No advertising for competing games (saying you play such and such a game is ok, but no full blown advertising)

#3 would ban about half the forum users

Jeff's banner doesn't even abide by them.
Isn't it only two lines of text?

Jeffery
11-13-2004, 02:20 AM
A) Keep it to one banner

B) 600 width x 140 height maximum (keep it friendly for our low-res members)

C) Nothing Obscene or vulgar. Keep it PG-13.

D) There is no size limitation if your banner sports a Greek salad, imported from Greek.

Adrianna mentioned text limits, but it was never added to the list.

And, since my banner is 1/2 the heighth mentioned, 2 of the lines just use up the banner space saved.

I measure sig's in fingers. Anything over 4 fingers is to big, whether that be banner, text, or combination of both.

4 fingers wide or tall?

Jeffery
11-13-2004, 06:57 AM
Tall. Width is a matter of not going off the screen. Very few people do that wrong.

Office_Shredder

No, I meant four finger heights tall, or four finger widths tall? Because four heights is really tall, but four widths is a bit short (you barely fit it, and you have a relatively sane sig)

Of course, that could just mean that everyone has a retarded siggy... which is pretty much true

Jeffery

You have a 2 finger sig. Actually, it is like 1 1/2.

My text is 1 finger, the banner is 2. Overall i have about 3 fingers.

Thats true, i only have a very low res, and why people use these images that are like 9billion pixels heigh, i get bored from scrolling down.

You could make the banner limit something like 64 x 64 or something (avatar size, four lines on plain text). It's actually amazing to see the banners when people have to abide by a set length. As to banning someone for going over, oh no. A moderator could simply edit the person's signature, and add a small side note like:
[Please abide to the banner limit. - theburning]
Of course, being able to add some nice funny comments as well. If the person continues to oversize his banners, then he would be warned.

Why would you make the banner limit a square?

Jeffery
11-14-2004, 08:46 AM
I like the 600x150 for banner + 2 lines text. Less banner means you can have a bit more text. No banner means you can have 8 lines of text.

That keeps them all relatively the same heighth.

I didn't mean a square, my mistake. Mean the maximum length would be 64, however 70 sounds a little better, meaning five lines. Eight lines of text, a bit much.

Jeffery

I'm trying to be a bit generous. I follow the 150 banner, 2 lines. Which means since I have a halfsized banner, I use 4 lines..

Really, a banner 150 high is about 6 lines of text. So add 2 more, and you have 8.

Sir Vival
11-14-2004, 09:00 AM
I think 6 lines is more reasonable. I could understand where you're coming from, as it looks nice having half of your signature text and the other half a banner, however some 'idiots' would just go the whole nine yards with the banner.

Jeffery
11-14-2004, 09:03 AM
Which is why Banners would be 150 in heighth or less. Anything over would be removed.

Eight lines is to much, six lines is far more smooth.

Six
Lines
Is
Just
This
Tall
Then you get to add 2 lines of text.
After you banner. That makes 8 lines of all text.

You've put it into a whole new perspective for me! Bleh~I guess 8 lines is nice.

Just trying to show that 6 lines = banner.

Personally, I will hunt down and kill anyone putting that many lines of heavy text in their siggy.

Look in the Rate Signature thread, a guy in there is a n00b with a wide ass banner.
