Yes, but people will continue to abuse the adding new event by putting spam crap there, like they already have been.

It had birthdays, and events posted by admins. It didn't have n00b gunk on it.

I use it sometimes.

Also, with the calander box on the main forums page is going to get out of hand with span in no time.
