This idea means that if sum1 get ur password wrong 3 times then the person is banned from using ne account from that computer. (sry if this idea has been done)

3 times in a day or 3 times ever because I have typed my password wrong before and im sure after 9 months ive done it atleast 5 times.

That's a bit much, isn't it?
Make it 8 or 10, and prevent access from that IP for just the one or two days.

I would say that the length grows each time you try to hack into ANY account on any server after 5 times you are banned from that computer for a month or more

You have to take into account the fact that people will sometimes mistype their pass a few times.
With that in mind, I'd reccomend either making it more than 5 times, less than a month, or both.

this is a really good idea of password protection because ppl all over Banff are getting their passwords guessed by this so called "hacker"

5 times = 1 day IP ban is best.
That way of it is a viable person trying to access the account, they do not lose acccess for too long.
But there IS password protection available.
MAKE YOUR PASSWORD HARDER TO GUESS.
99% of those "hacked" had easy passwords. Trust me rdft if a dumb password. As is qazwsx.
Common key combinations are first ones checked.

But but but.... that requires thinking Jeffery! However can we do that?

IP Banning does not work because many people are using NAT.
A whole university may appear as one IP.
Ban an IP, you potentially ban quite a few paying customers.
Ban the ability to log into the account and you give people the ability to screw the real person over. Dont want them to play for the day? just put in the wrong password X times and get their account locked.

Actually, you ban the IP for a day, and you might nail one or two other people. Most universities have a block of IP's, and if one is banned, only a small section of the university is blocked. And since it is for one day only, that is a chance people take. Also, very few universities have more than a couple of paying players.
Right now, if someone does something big enough to be banned, the same risk is taken.
At least with a temp ban, it is only a day.
But I agree with locking the name itself. People would screw with that.

But my password wasn't nething to with my name, clan or life. Infact my old password was 12 digits long with the name like ThiS oR tHIs. So this was a VERY VERY good guess.

As Jeffery said, just make harder passwords. This idea would not work for me, because I am impatient and have a complicated 9 letter password, it therefore takes me at least 4 tries to get it right. That's if I am lucky. I've been known to copy and paste from my e-mail, because I just cannot type it right.

Keep a small list written down on the inside of your eyelid. Or on a piece of paper in your pocket. But I prefer the eyelid.

I'd also recommend installing an LED in your eyelid so you can read it.
You might need some sort of microscopic battery to power it too.

I wonder if those password things where it has your passwords registered and all you need is a retinal scan or a thumb print would work on TAO.

If they take a thumb print to figure out your password, why not make your thumb print the pw?
We could all install eye scanners on our computers to subsitute as our new passwords! YES! It's so needlessly simple too!

If you miss it 2 times you should have to answer a question that the actual user typed in and answered

This increases the guessing possibilities ASTRONOMICALLY. Imagine how many noobs would make it something so easily guessable? This would double the "i was hackez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" threads on GD, Bugs, and probably triple the input of PMs to Bills or whoever.

Most places take a code for a password, rather than a thumb print, this just verifies that you are you and automatically enters your password. That way, you can have some 20 letter super-password and not have to worry about memorizing it.

This is actually not that bad of an idea. If this was a perfect world of course. For $20 (one time) more they could send you this, and you would not have to worry about being hacked. Of course there would be massive hardware issues and all the people complaining that they cannot give their passwords to their friends. Here is my suggestion: take an ice cream scoop....you get the idea.

But what of the players who lost their eyes in the war???
The system as it is now works just fine for the majority of no0nstupid players.

I know, I was just saying that O_S's idea, was not that bad of one. It is just that it would not work for the current average IQ of TAO.
