View Full Version : How do rankings work?

Ok, before I get blasted, just tell me where this is explained. I've looked around a little, but I haven't found it. Has this already been discussed?
I don't want anyone to think that I'm downing anybody, but let's just take the Great Lakes server for an example:
1 Aezeal 128 0 4 132
2 danoodle 205 0 13 218
3 me=cheat 139 0 6 145
Is this just a random listing of the top 100 in the server? danoodle has a better win/ loss ratio here, right? So does me=cheat for that matter. Is there something else that sets the ranking, or is this just a feature in progress? I'm not upset or anything, I'm just curious as to how it works.

I've been wondering this myself.
Anybody know?

Could someone out there tell us what/where/why the rankings are what they are?

Obviously not. :)
Nice sig line stylixg. It's funny 'cause it's true. :D
Ob plug for my contention that we replace this bogus ranking scheme with a bona fide Rating scheme a la chess.

Push, push, push!

Holy Moly! Are you trying to crash the server making it complete complex equations at the end of every match on top of the overwhelming lobby count on top of the chat lag on top of a possibly full game floors? That page just seems a bit too over-the-top TAO.

Why not just use a weighting system? SOmething relatively simple.
For Example:
Non-Gold (NG) win over Gold (G) - 5 pts.
G win NG - 3 pts.
NG win NG or G win G - 4 pts.
Draw - 1 pt. each
You can add twists, by subtracting points for loses or consecutive loses, but I definitely think that it needs to be weighted.

Seems that way. :D

This is how I believe it is done. (wins+draws)/(losses+draws)
And it is ordered by this ratio, highest to lowest.
stylixg
12-09-2003, 02:33 PM
That seems a bit random...

Not currently:
Aezeal 128+0/4+0 = 32
danoodle 205+0/13+0 = 15.769
me=cheat 139+0/6+0 = 23.16
Therefore me=cheat would be higher. There's got to be something else at work here.

Can anybody think of a simple and straight forward system? ;)
And we still haven't gotten the answer to how it's done now. :)

I know I wouldn't want to have any of those on the other side looking at me.
If there was ever a reason to raise that white flag..... :)

This killed the conversation.
Either that or me.
But...I'm blaming you. :)
Can anybody, ANYBODY, tell us how the rankings work?
Bueler? Bueler?

I'm not that great at mathematics. However, I did make a bunch of calculations and this is my finding: The more loses there are, the less negative effect each loss has on the rating.

oh yea your a genious for figuring that out lol

Some have suggested that each loss has a negative point value and each win has a positive point value.

Basically, when you do good things, good things happen to you. When you do bad things, bad things happen to you.
There is no divine power involved, the universe takes care of it, and it just happens according to the actions you take.

no, you don't understand. What Furious_Angel is saying is if you have say 100 losses that may equal a negative of 50 or so in your rank, but if you have 50 losses that may equal a negative of like 35 in your rank.
See? 1 loss is 1 5 losses may be 4 10 losses may only be 6 and so on.

:D
Seriously, can we get an official word on this, how does this work? :)
stylixg
12-09-2003, 05:02 PM
THe official word is that no one really knows. It's a random number generator. If your number happens to be drawn, you shoot to the top. Otherwise, you are just part of the faceless masses...
And that makes it officially official. :D
tHE cHESS rATING sYSTEM IS DESIGNED BY CHESS NUTS, SILLY. oF COURSE OUR HEADS WOULD EXPLODE.
(wups, programming in FORTRAN, if you can believe that)...
Of course, there is compensation. While our heads might explode, we, unlike chess nerds actually have a chance to get laid.
...that is, if we ever get off the computer and stop playing TAO...
Anyway, the Chess Rating System is cool because your rating is stable, and representative of your relative value. Other systems fail these tests.

I hope they don't release it. I like mystery. Lets see who can discover the secret formula.

Oh, wait... That's just Thousand Island Dressing. Not so mysterious, I guess...

It really would be nice if they released a system that was easy to follow, and gave you a rating based on your accomplishments, that you could compare to others.
And make it easy to match up games with others similar to your rating, maybe a player search or something?

yea they should tell us more about the site and seed owns this site so you would think he would put a link of the legend server on here at least... i think the rankings are really messed up i need a moderator to tell me how it works
now that AzN_GuY is a moderator (congrats b the way) can you tell us how it works? i should be on there but i'm not :(
i'm catchin up to danoodle he better watch his back :)

You can't surpass him until you play him. You can equal him, but to exceed him, you gotta beat him. Best 3 out of 5. Get your wins up, then play him a few times.

First off, on the rankings, i still am stumped, it's not like the moment you're a mod they tell you these things ;) But i'll look into it! :D
secondly, on Seed's server: www.digisonline.com
There, that's it. If you want to play there, go ahead, but dont go thinking it's the same game. You get what you pay for, not just gold vs free, but where you go. You dont get this support community, this control, or this much playtime with 3 servers. Take your pick either way. I like it here.

12-09-2003, 07:19 PM
AzN_GuY is there any way you can ind out i mean since your a moderator now cant you just directly talk to seed i tried e-mailing him but he didnlt answer me and i asked Divine a few questions but i think i just plain pissed him off lol and i have been advised not to talk to bills for reasons that will not be stated...
i just want to be on rankings for great lakes and want to know how they are judged...

Well, as far as I can tell the only official word has been:
From Seed on his own site’s forum:
I think I'll keep the equation to myself for now, just in case I need to change it in the futuer =)

There doesn't appear to be any relation to the ranks based just upon win/draw/loss/total. At least none that I can find... or anybody else.
I suspect there is something else involved in the equation. Something like wins/total games as the basis, with an extra +1 for wins against players who are at least twice as good as you, and an extra -1 for losses against players who are at least two times worse than you.
All that the system would have to do is keep track of how many of your games are won/lost against people at a significant difference than your skill level. Just don't show these stats, and nobody knows about them.
Snork

That would be a good idea, have it based on wins/loses, and then factor in the records of the people you played to adjust your rankings.
In chess, you lose less points the farther above you somebody is ranked, and conversly all the way around, because you were expected to lose.

I suspect that you get ranking points for winning against someone else with lots of wins but none for winning against a n00b or a suiciding friend, but I agree about not worrying about the ranking. Our clan is starting a chess-like rating system but that is just for members.

A couple of points:
1. There is an exact relationship between number of wins, number of loses, number of draws, and rank.
2. The more you lose, the less it affects you. So it is usually more worthwile to have a slightly worse ratio but many more games than to start over hoping for perfection.
