What exactly is so good about Sports Games? They're linear, simple-minded, require no strategy, and just downright boring. Give me FIVE EXCELLENT REASONS WHY SPORTS GAMES ARE GOOD.

well for the simple fact that there are simple minded people, you know the type, the ones who forget to take the stickers off of their tall tees, or cant figure out how to put ona hat, or even decide what a reasonable amount for shoes is. personally i have yet to find one game other than wwf for n64 that is sports related that i like, that game is just so customizable, its cool, other than that, im strictly rpg, and never ever again double post, or you will be beaten with your own overpriced shoe

Me and my friends were having an arguement about Sports Games last night. I argue what I said in the first post. They said that Sports Games have a hell of a lot more strategy than RPG games. I mentioned RTS games, they said that Sports Games have more strategy than even those!
Three words. They-are-idiots.
Granted, there is an element of strategy in most sports games, but to say there is more strategy in, say, Fifa 2005 than Warcraft 3 is just stupid.
Tell your friends they're morons.

Quite true. Such action will be taken DFG.
Jeffery
12-22-2004, 09:22 AM
Well, football as an example, does have strategical thinking. You have to choose your play style, your plays, what you will do (ie choose a strategy) and then make that play. It is a lot more of a shirt term strategy, but is still there.
If you had brought this topic up as a discussion on video games, or even sports video games, you would have gotten it as a discussion.
Instead you attacked it, which is a bad strategy to take.

1. Too long.

4. Too much time leveling up for no reason.
5. Every RPG the same (monsters, characters)
6. Forces you to play for at least an hour to get ANY thing done.

but i want in on this, whats different about sports games, whats so exciting, the snow is more real in madden 2005 than 2004, or there is some snappy new catch phrase when someone gets tackled? i see no difference between any sports games, given that there are different sports, so how can you say that you get bored because each rpg is the same, rpg's are like interactive books you unfold your own legend as you go along, thats the whole point behind it, just like different books each rpg has different plots, characters, etc.

Interactive books? Wow, you must be a total nerd.
The difference in sports games from year to years is the rosters. Teams fire and aquire different players each year. Also more features are added in the owner mode.

4) You try coming up with the best team possible through a fantasy draft

actually i am an athlete, im a football player, and a swimmer, but i dont see why i need to play football with a controller when i can go outside and do it for real. and in a game what does a roster change? i mean every guy is practically the same, im sure it says their stats are different, but in essence its generally the same

OK where to get started...
Sports team organizing : done in 2 or 3 minutes if you have a brain.
Easy : i bought 1 of each sport game from ESPN and all are owned.
RPG longetivity and not not replayable: Diablo 2, World of Warcraft, Lineage, extremely replayable. Do you not have a thrill at gaining new power?
Sports: Sure they are fun, but doing the same thing everygame gets old
RPG: Every time you get on, something new to do/train/get rich. Leveling up is worth it when you can pwn someone then laugh in their face. Why not play for only an hour?
Sports:Sure for football you have to choose plays and crap, but i can usually use the same plays in an order over and over.
RPGS: Why not put your mind to the test? *Xenosaga is not for retards*
Sports: Can be mastered
RPGs: There is always someone better than you, and if you have the heart of a gamer, you will work hard to beat him/her.
Sports: after a game or two, I am done with it for a week.
Id say the game structure for me is
RPG>FPS>ACTION/PLATFORMER>SPORTS>PUZZLES *ala tetris*
And terp, i cannot understand all of your posts real well
EDIT *some added goodies*:
RPGs
Pros: Leveling, awesome spells and enchanting landscapes. Always something to do. You can become emotionally involved, i once nearly cried because of some guys death on a game, i cant remember it right now. Usually some cool secret hidden and hellish weapons and armor. You can play the game through the eyes of different species and powers. And some games you can choose whether to grow up being good or bad. *ala Fable* RPGs also have incredible fanbases and make phenominal multiplayer games. *ala diablo and evercrack*
Cons: There are some poorly made RPGs which i must say, i would rather throw a rock at a tree than play it. They can be boring combat with blatant music, terribly voice acting, and cheesy forced dialogue. Also, avoid RPGs if you have no patience. Turn for turn based games are usually done badly, but there are many good ones *ala Final Fantasy and Xenosaga*
Sports
Pros: Being able to smack an opposing player without getting hurt in real life id pretty good. Getting a touchdown/homerun/points is fun. You can set up teams and customize players to make the "ultimate" team. Sports can be averagly fun multiplayer, but it sure is fun to make fun of a friend when you score on an open pass.
Cons: You can do this in real life. Extremely repeatable at times. TD after TD, points after point, homerun after homerun doing it in different ways. Some sports games are made poorly with odd gliches and unfair opponents, or insanely easy bots. Single player is 90% of the time atrocious.
Please feel free to argue so i can prove you wrong *zing*

Also for those who keep saying" I just rather go out and play a real sport then play a video game of one" Not all the time can this be done. It is somethimes very hard to get a group of friends together for a afternoon of fun. People sometimes just don't have the time.

I don't have any sports games. Because I'd rather play them in real life then a video game. RPG's cannot be literally possible on earth. That's what makes them quite a bit different.

I got tired of reading this thread after page 2, so sorry if what I post now has allready been covered.
It's kind of insulting to say to a person that they are simple minded just because they like a sports videa game. I heard this from someone else (can't remember the name) on some other thread (can't remember the thread). :)
Anyways, they basicaly said that just because someone enjoys a sports game (I'm not sure what the discussion was about then... I think another type of game though) doesn't mean they have a simple mind. Games are meant to have fun. Some people just have fun playing sports games rather than RPGs. That doesn't make that person simple minded.
I kind of think it's funny, how I see people think that playing RPGs make them feel superior to someone who plays a "mindless" first person shooter, or in this case, a sports game.
"It requires more thinking, stratagies, blah blah blah..."
And that makes your better... how?
This may be a bad comparison, but I'm going to use it anyways since I know what I'm talking about. Drums.
People choose different brands of drums (I choose Tama), as gamers will choose different games (rpgs, sports...). As a drummer, I will still respect people who play other than Tama drums. It's all in personal prefference. I prefer Tama, maybe some other guy prefers Pearl. Does that make that person simple-minded? Why don't you respect someone who enjoys a different game?
And here's something I heard on MTV. It was some video game show er something... it looked gay, but the remote was broken and I was half asleep allready. The TV was just so far away... and the sofa was so comfy... Eh, anyways.
They said something like this: Not everyone can be a football team owner in real life. But in a video game, you can be whoever you want.
So, maybe you'll never be able to coach the [insert favorite sports team here] in real life, but thanks to sports video games, you can get pretty dame close. Well, maybe not... I'm just pretty much saying what I saw on MTV.
But, to tell you the thruth, I don't really like sports games. I don't really video games at all. Sure, I'll get hooked on one for a bit, and play every so often. I don't actually own any sports games, and haven't played one either (at least I don't remember ever doing so...). So all of what I said could be complete BS (probably is). But you can make that decision. I'm going to church now... well, very soon. I'll be damned if someone were to read all this crap.
On a side note,
Merry Christmas!!!
Serge

Not necessarily. There are RPG games that have the infamous + choice. You beat the game. New Game has a + beside it, you choose it, and you start off the game with all the same weapons, levels, and power. Enemies get stronger also, however.
For example, Chrono Cross has this feature, minus the enemies get stronger. The point in this is that you get the Time Egg at the start of the game. If you beat the game at different points in the game, you get different endings. Then there's the issue that you can get certain characters by doing different things. If you do something specific, you will get the Dragoon named Glenn; but at the same time you knocked off your only chance to get the fisher-guy.
I've also heard of this PS game called Vagrant Story. Anybody know anything about this one?
