Here's a battle grid template for strategy discussions. Easiest thing to do is copy and paste it into Notepad to edit. When you paste a completed grid back into a forum message, put it between [ code ] and [ /code ] tags (without the extra spaces). If you edit it in Word or Wordpad, make sure to use a fixed pitch font, like Courier.

I think I speak for everyone in saying that we will not post our formations because then ANYONE can just look here and find a way to beat it.....sorry choi

While I thank Choi for the effort he put into this, I think a more powerful tool might be a way of recording the game, like the way chess matches are recorded move-by-move. If we could combine the grid with the recording nomeclature, it would provide a way to reveiw games when one is offline or even away from the computer. Anyone up for this?

No, I wouldn't expect or want anyone to post their formation, but you can discuss strategy with a formation illustration. That formation and discussion might be near the end of the game instead of the beginning. But, if it's not useful, then don't use it.

I tried to put such a system together a few weeks ago, but it's absolutely impossible to pay attention to the game AND attempt to log it with a notation system at the same time. Also, I found initial setups to be a problem, since players can have any combination of 15 units over 49 squares.

For a successful system of notation, you'd need to log the moving unit, its starting square, its ending square, its attack, its target square, the result of the attack, and the final facing. It'd almost have to be hard-coded into the software, a drain that I doubt Bills will waqnt on his servers.

I like the grid system better, and it's more visual - most chess notation uses a visual aid anyway. Now, if we could setup a system like chessbase uses, where you can click anywhere in the notation to see the board at that move, we'd be in really good shape.
