Thats right. The screen, underneath the plexiglass covering, broke. How the hell does this happen?

For Microsoft did not like you giveing your bussiness to someone other then them. Also it broke due to a very powerful and boring magic.

pressure to the screen or ipod does it. Thats my guess at least.
Its happened to my cell phones and calculator.
there's force pushing down on the ipod, the plexiglass holds because its tougher than the screen, but the screen itself cracks from it. Keeping it in ur pocket too much (if you have change or keys in it as well), in a bag pocket with too much stuff or not enough space, keeping it in ur back pocket when sitting. All of that can cause it, plus other things.
Nothing to do but get it replaced.

check ur booklet u got for the warranty info. Apple's pretty good at taking care of em as far as my experience goes. If you gotta, call that number they have; they charge for that though.
Yeah, I broke a $400 cell phone from that sort of thing, had no clue when it happened. I'm pretty sure it just cracked when I had it in my pocket and I was working. I had to pay to replace mine, hopefully you'll get it taken care of easily.

Indeed.
I still am happy with CDs, but sadly, soon CD's will go away and iPods and other digital music things will be all over.
I wouldn't be suprised that if they would repair the iPod, that it would cost more to repair it than it is to buy a new one. Unless of course the warranty covers it.

u 2 are so bitter that I was tempted to neg rep yah, but i won't, since it is just what u think of em...no matter how uninformed :P
As a musician, I think ipods and similar high capacity music storage systems are unbelievably helpful.
Currently...1 in 5 students at CSUS hav an ipod :) i thought that was a nifty little figure. Its fun trading music between us when I'm lazing about in the union.

I'm sorry, I don't really know all that much about iPods, but how do you get the music on them anyways?
Do you pay per song?
If so, ignore the rest of this post.
If not, I have a reason for disliking them. I also am a musician, and am in a band now as well. If we put out a CD, I wouldn't want to loose money to people simply downloading my music and not paying. Then again, the same can be done with CDs on programs like Kazzaa (or however you spell it).
But I think you do pay for music for those, don't you? But then again, as I said, CD's also can just have free downloaded music on them...
I'm not saying I think iPods suck, as I myself don't own one. :]
But I understand batteries only last so long, then you need to buy a whole new iPod, no? CD's don't do that. :)
But CD's can usually only hold 80 minutes of music...
So I guess both have their ups and downs. CD's are just my personal preference. Although I'm sure one day, CD's will go POOF and I'll end up having to use an iPod or something like that.
But wait... how would bands sell albumns then? All through the internet as downloads? Eh, I think I'm gonna go do a bit of research on iPods now. I don't even fully know how they work. :D
Btw... STUPID TWO SMILEY PER POST RULE!!!!!
Bring to apple, some of this people will just either say i dont know or say thats why i dont have an ipod... just bring it there and soemone will answer for you, i mean is their product so yah, the only thing i once heard about ipod's was the battery that they go dead early and were awfully expense, so far my work perfect, anyways good luck.

So you're just playing music for the money and not the music itself and the hot chicks?
Also, you charge the battery. I've never heard of one going out.

I play music for that fact that I want to play music.
But for some people, they are good enough to make playing music their occupation. They are creating a form of entertainment for people. Aren't just about all other forms of entertainment made by someone for someone else paid for? Why would music be an exeption.

According to Sweden, the #1 cause of broken cell phones is tight pants. (http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/tight-pants-break-phones-027127.php)
Gotta quit wearing those tight pants if you want to keep it safe, mega ;)

I saw it on the news (CNN?) and they had a report on how one guy was using his ipod and 1 (or 2) years later the battery stopped working, he called customer support and they said they couldn't replace it. :\

Yes, I've seen a movie made by someone pretty pissed off at this issue. Something that the batterie will only last so money months, and Apple doesn't replace it. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. I can't remember where I saw this movie though... I'll post it if I find it.

They could. Just not under warranty.
The warranty lasts 1 year, unless you buy applecare. Bad batteries are very replaceable, though it happens very very rarely. The batteries do, however, get slightly less efficient over several years of use.
I want an ipod badly. The batteries do last quite a long time, for their size and overall niftiness. I've never heard of the screen breaking on one (until now), but it does happen to cell phones and calculators a lot, and it's exactly the same technology.
In response to Tama's concerns, it's just like buying any other media player. You can get a dvd player and use it to play dvd's you burned off the internet. You can buy a tape player and use it to play tapes of songs you copied from the radio. You can buy an ipod and use it to play mp3 songs you downloaded from the internet. Apple specifically encourages buyers to play only purchased music on their ipods. They provide the iTunes music store, from which you can purchase songs and play them on your ipod. There are also other, cheaper sources of music on the internet, that are equally legal, just a little more thrifty.
You can't judge the product by what it's used for. That's like saying VCRs are evil because people use them to watch porn.

To Tama...
K, on batteries, I've got a 3g (3'rd generation, old model, they're currently on the 5'th one I believe). My battery life for my ipod with str8 playing is about 8 hrs. Give it an hour of recharge and you'll get over 6 hrs of use out it. 3hrs of recharge to get the full bit.
Battery life, apple's own statement in their booklets says that average use (3-4 days a week, 2 recharges a week) will have the battery lasting over 7 years. MY lvl of use (needing to recharge it each day from constant use) they say about 5 years. I'm inclined to believe them. 18 months of HEAVY use and battery issues. I do know that they can replace the batteries. I've heard stories...but my sister has managed to damage the battery on hers and she got it replaced (still under warranty, so I'm not sure what they'd charge).
They're also tough, this badboy survived UPS wharehouse shifts, construction work, and other ordeals my discman get too banged up to last through.
Muscians side use..I put ALL the songs I play and learn onto it. Its immensly helpful for a lot of things in that. I can hook it into my comp at any time and share some of my work, I can practice my music at any time by listening and rehearsing.
I hear yah on the music dl concerns. Itunes OFFICIAL site charges 1$ a dl for songs. Not a bad deal compared to cd prices I suppose. But yeah, like burnt cd's or any other stored media, the files come from where the come from and don't hav to be downloaded from the itunes store. Myself, almost all the music is my own, cd's I own (70% is from cd's I own), or recordings for my rehearsals or demo music from ppl.
If you ahve any questions on ipods or the media, let me know. I'm our store's offical rep and expert on dealing with ipods (we sold them for a while and still deal with accessories). Granted I'm biassed to some extent owning one, but the damn thing is living on my hip basically because I find it so useful.
Yeah, its a bit pricy, but there's ways around that to an extent. Its useful, its tough and lasting, and believe it or not, Apple takes care of problems pretty well and without hassle from what I've seen of these.

The blacka nd red ipod is the U2 Ipod, is really cool looking and it has their signatures in the back...I like the 40g that actually looks like a computer its very very colorful, i mean it has evrtything u need pictures etc..

Heh... I work in the Apple Service department at a camera store. We used to sell ipods as well, but then they created an entirely new department for ipods and notebook computers.
So it's *almost* like we have the same job, mega! :P
