Hello. My name is FryLock, and I am here with an important message. A message many of you may not realize or think about as you go through your capitalistic day.
This demonstrates, more than ever, why children need literacy programs. The next time you're stuffing your face with a fast food burger, think about that $5...and how it could help poor little kids like these ones learn how to spell. Or form coherent sentences.
Children like these are our future. Do we want to grow up in a "werld" that is devoid of "maeniging"?
Put down that roll of breath mints! That 35 cents could help poor little Joey understand puncuation. That $2 call girl...she represents an entire class of little kids learning to use the elusive semicolon.
Next time...before you splurge on yourself...think of the children.
Because of your donation, one day, grammar and spelling may come together in glorious harmony.
Yes, I am feeling very cynical tonight. Thanks for asking. I am also very tired of the grammatical and linguistic butchery that happens on the forums day in and day out....

My sister is doing speech patholgy at university. Apparently there are some grammatical mistakes that she isn't allowed to correct children on because they have become so common place and socially acceptable. For instance using present tense when you should be using past tense, "I say(said) to Jennifer", "I come(came) out of the room".
It's a shame that a lot of people have the mindset that noone cares (they don't care) because perhaps in a few hundred years kids at school will be subjected to the literature that is written today and they will understand it about as much as any kid now understands Shakespeare.

what does it matter if we misspell or shorten words???
If you were on any other game forum on the net, or chatting with your buddy on instant messages, it wouldn't matter at all. The thing that's different about this game is that it's not a point/click/numb your mind game. This game, to play well, requires thought, and as such, attracts people who generally either are more mature, or think more. Because of this difference between this game and others, those people who seem to make up the majority here (notice I said seem) get irritated by the terrible writing abilities of many of the posters we see here. If you have a problem writing correctly, or simply don't want to, you have several options. The first option is to simply ignore those who are bothered by it. Another choice would be to run your posts through a spelling and grammar check before posting them. If neither of these options sound pleasing to you, one may opt for the ever common "telling off" of those who have issues with your posts. And finally, if all else fails, you could always just play the game and skip the forums, or go find a mindless teenie bop shoot 'em up game forum where your 1337n355 will be looked upon with envy.

Plus is it not up to the parent, teachers and themselves to choose either to place proper punctuation/spelling in whatever the write.

Because it gives off a certain type of persona that you don't care to be bothered with the simplest of tasks, such as visiting dictionary.com, or re-reading your post to make sure it flows smoothly.
Believe it or not, this flows into real life as well, not just gaming forums. Your spelling atrocities will become so commonplace, you won't even think twice about it while you type away. Sure, spell checker will help you out with a few things, but it's not perfect.
When people look upon such things that give off an aura on mediocrity, they assume the same thing applies to your general morals, and rightly so.
In other words, if you say 'ur' instead of your, or you're, then it the same thing as wearing a sign that says 'I'm a bloody idiot'. And guess what? People will believe you.
Now this wouldn't be so bad if only one in every so many people did this, But a great great number of people do this, and with the internet permeating so many aspects of our lives, well, the effects of it are greater than you would initally think.
But hey, don't take my word for it.

I agree with the spelling and shortening of words... Only problem is, I can’t spell well.
I do try my hardest to remember to spell check, as many people have been *commenting* on my pour spelling.
Needles to say, I’ve officially banned my self from this thread, or will try my hardest to do well when I do post here.

Honestly guys, it's not that hard to spell correctly. How about trying to re-read what you wrote? It can only take you a few seconds at most. How about when you make an error you press that key in the upper right corner, backspace, and fix it. I don't use spellchecker ever on the forums and it's hard to find any errors in my posts. Just read it before you post it like you're *supposed* to think before you speak.

I've been complaining about bad spellers for a long time in this game, and unfortunately I've fallen into a habit of shortening words and phrases. ><
Here's a few I plan on never using again among others:
nething = anything
any1 = anyone
@ = at
ello = hello
y'all = you all

Chat programs and Muds were the downfall of all words. People wanted to say as much as possible in a short of time as they could.
Now, common mispellings happen. I do it all the time, due to the way I hold the computer while typing.
But the contracted words are rediculous. There is no rush to make a post. Take your time, and use the word some English idiot made up for us to use.

Fry,
Are you telling me that for the price of my morning cup of coffee, I could be contributing to the de-moronification of the forums? That spending just $2 a day on children's literacy programs will help me avoid having to wade through endless piles of gibberish? Are you telling me that for a small contribution, I could help a child live a better spelled and less idiotic existance?
Where do I sign up?

A question for Mr. Frylock.
Sir, will Banff be counted as a proper English word in these spelling programs?

It is a Pronoun. A name of a place. Pronouns are rarely improper.

I sudder to think that poor, innocent kids today do not receive the proper education to learn how to use punctuation and that the bad spellers of the world truly are "untied." We should all take the time today to pull some child aside and teach them what a semi-colon is. After we get out of jail for inprisonment, we can all report back here to tell how our experience went. We would be, after all, making the world a better place for all intelligent readers.

Bottle...I misspelled several words in that post on purpose beyond the obvious ones. But good catch!
Northwind - yes, just send the money to me, I'll take care of everything.
Medemia - while pulling kids off the street and teaching them about the semicolon in the back of your van is a wonderful idea, our community frowns on these things nowadays, even if you give them a lollipop at the end.

Oh my god. This is an old thread. Great bump :)
Edit : Oh, it is from 2005..
Personally I agree with the spelling issue; (theres the semicolon!) people should know how to use grammar correctly, and be able to spell. If on a forum, you have time...you don't have to type with 'u' instead of 'you' which is only 2 letters longer, wasting about 1-2 seconds of your time if you are not a fast typer.
And I can only spell because my parents are damn smart (no, they did not hammer it into me, I can just pick up spellings well because I'm related to them).

Yeah, I know what you mean blud. My parents both are great yodellers. So now I have this inclination to walk into Stater Bros. and start yodelling at the top of my lungs just for the heck of it. Afterall, it's a biological trait. I can't keep it stuck inside me, even if I have never yodelled in my entire life. I know it'll come natural for me.
I compltly agree. It realy isnt tht hard to jus chec ur post b4 u post it.
