Ok, we have some really good debators on TAO. And some not so great debators.

I am hereby forming an official debate club. Members who wish to join will be listed, and after a topic is named, they will be assigned to debate pros or cons of that topic. members will not always get to debate their personall belief, as this is for debate, not convincing people of how you feel.

After topic is assigned, both teams will have to decide who does Opening, Argument, Rebuttel and Closing. All will be PMed or Mailed to me, and i will post them in the thread.

When it is done, a jury will vote on who did the better job of arguing their case. Again, decission will not be based on personal belief, but on how well the side argued their case.

Week 1 Topic: Team 2 and 3 Pro (US does have right), Team 1 and 4 Con (US does not have right)
Does the US government have the right to hold suspected "enemy combatants" for indefinite periods of time without charging them, or giving them access to legal recourse?

Ok, throughout the thread I have drops some of the rules, i will post them all here now so you can go over things with your team mates.

* Teams- Each team is made up of 4 members. Each member will be assigned to submit their section by Midnight of the day it is due. (all times are EST) There will be 2 teams argiung Pro, and 2 teams arguing Con. Teams 1 and 2 will debate each other, and teams 3 and 4 will debate each other.
* Sections- Each team must assign positions to its members.
Opening- This person will be responsible for stating their teams position on the topic, as well as laying a groundwork for their argument.
Argument- This person will be responsible for explaining their position, and giving facts to back it up. You MAY quote small portions of available texts, but MUST give reference for it.
Rebuttal- This person will be responsible for replying to the other teams Argument. Again, any texts quoted MUST be credited.
Closing- The anchor man(woman) is responible for the "final thought" for the team. While you may reply to the rebuttal, you should concentrate more on finishing your teams viewpoint off.
Each section is due by Midnight of it's day, Monday- Opening, Tuesday- Argument, Wednesday-Rebuttal, Thursday- Closing

* Submissions- All submissions will be limited in length to 1000 words, and will be sent via a webform that will handle emailing it. http://tacticsfan.com/debate.php They must be received by Midnight of the day due. They will be posted by 10am of the following day. Spelling and grammar DO count, so you might consider using a word program to double check your submissions.
* Judging- Judging will be based on several areas. Up to 6 points per area.
Spelling and Grammar
Validity of Argument (this means is it researched well, are their facts real)
Overall Convincability (this means did the person tie it to the topic and explain their position fully)
* Judges- Judges will not base scores based on personal beliefs.
* Conduct- All members should remember, you are arguing the topic. Do not make personal attacks. Language matters. Keep it civil, and remember, even if you are arguing for something you personally are dead set against, it is your duty to try as hard as you can to prove your position.

Sounds like a good idea Jeffery. I'd volunteer to be one of the debaters but I doubt I'll have the time to put enough thought into my arguments to make it worth it.

I would however be interested in the less time-consuming task of being on the jury (assuming that is that you have the organizational skills to make it work well). I don't know what your criteria is but I'm confident I would be beyond qualified. I'm betting I could get some SIers that could vouch for that.

Jeff - I'll join, subject to the condition that my real life debates and work come first. If I have to choose between writing what is essentially an op-ed piece for an online forum or preparing my actual oral argument for court, the choice is obvious.

I any case...should I actually be able to participate, woe be unto the other side. You're facing someone whose whole training is for this sort of thing. :)

Make this an incentive, so if people argue in other threads(aside for the argument thread) they arn't allowed to debate anymore. It would cut down on people arguing because people that argue most likely want to debate.

Well, tonight I will be putting out the rules and guides, as well as formalizing the teams.

The debates will be very structured, much like any Debate Team you would find in schools.

The topic will be displayed. Each team will pick one person to do an Opening, another for the Argument, a third for the Rebuttel, a fourth for another rebuttel, and a Fifth for Closing.

Arguments will not be directly posted into the forums, all will be sent to me before being displayed. Each side will have a certain time limit to finish their argument, if they do not do so, they take a penalty, and another team member must make the argumant on behalf of the team.

The six judges will have a rating score to be given to each argument. SAcores for each argument will be added up, giving an overall team score, as well as individiual scores for individual awards.

Well, i have 2 topics in mind right now I will be running first.
After that, I will be scamming people for ideas.

BTW, Teams will be selected Saturday and Sunday. Rules will be posted Saturday. Topic will be announced Sunday night. Debate will begin Monday Morning.

The way this will work is each section of the debate will be due by Midnight of each day (EST). After it all are received, they will be posted at the same time. The next team mate then as until the next midnight to turn in their piece. Each person submitting a section may use quotes of materials to back up their point, but MUST give reference to where the quote or fact is from.
The size limit on entries will be as large as will fit into one PM.

Judges will be asked to score each entry individually, based on proper use of spelling and grammar (debators might want to type in a spelling program and check before posting), How well the argument seems researched, and the overall effectiveness of the argument.
Note: Judges will not be making judgements based on their personal feelings for the content.

Each team will have their scores added up. Whoever has the highest score will be declared the winner. By the way, there are 4 teams. 2 debating each side of the issue.

Just look at it this way: No one here knows what your name is, what you look like, where you are from, or how old you are on the web, until you tell them. The two things that we do share, are our personality, and intelect, and that is all that counts.

What is your standpoint on staring out one or two letters... Technically its not swearing, but I'm sure a 6 year old could figure it out... It shouldn't be acceptable, however I am not currently privy to the rule on this.

The Mods should add to the rules list that modifying a swear word slightly still consists of swearing.

The whole point of the post was to stop examining everything in terms of netjak. Look at the individuals instead of the tag, i'd say all the bannings have been warranted, the fact that they are in netjak is irrelavant. Like Jeffery said himself, birds of a feather, flock together. Netjak does have a group of very vocal guys, there is nothing wrong with that until they step over the line. The fact that netjak has more people that tend to cross the line on the language barrier, doesn't mean it has to do with netjak itself.

I've never seen clacks even come close to swearing I don't think.

The other thing is, nomar has been vulgar in some of his posting, do I think less of him for it, absolutely not, because he doesn't use it in the way I dislike, but the fact is it isn't allowed, and has to be punished, or more people would start to do the same.

My thoughts exactly, Warcow! Everytime something happens between a mod and a NJer the other NJ members get their undies in a bunch with the 'they're out to get us' speaches. Just look at some of your other members, like Hugh. No one's out to get him because he's a cool guy, and doesn't break the rules. Same with Clacker, and a few others. Unfortunately for NJ, the guys who do, speak out more. Also, Jeffery's a NJer and his situation was handled fairly.

This is the mentality used most times by people who use a lot of drugs and they tell me "You can't know if it's bad unless you try it." The conversation will go something like this becuase I slowly break the stupidity out of the theory:

In conclusion prophet, no, you don't need to be in a clan on all three servers to "imagine" the incredible amount of stress you're put under all the time every day. I will do well to remember how hard a life it is in Netjak compared to the life of let us say, a starving child in Africa. The size of the clan isn't going to instill hatred. Experiances would and still through all the bad situations/relationships Netjak has instilled with many members it is highly respected.
