No, you can't get "new" units unless you are gold.

But, as a grey, it is possible to get extra units that you will already have. Occasionally, you may see a message when on the game that reads:

If you are curently in battle, the winner will gain one "X"!!!

(X could be a cleric, enchantress, dark magic witch, pyromancer, barrier ward or assassin.)

If you are in a battle at this time and you win it, you will get an extra unit, depending on what unit "X" was.
