View Full Version : How much do you actually play TAO?

Jeffery

Simple pole to see how much members currently play the game. Please be honest.

Also, if you don;t play, or don't play much, please say why, and what could be done to get you to play more.

I play a few times every few days. I just don't have the time for it anymore. I've also gotten a bit distraced with my art (not the sigs, actual fine art).

I usually just go on to talk, but I do play rarely.
Only if someone wants to play me or if I'm really bored.

I haven't played a single non-tournament game in over 2 months I believe. The desire to own others isn't there anymore, and spammers just make it scary to even log onto a server to talk to people. What could be done? Well, Bills could come to my house and beg me to start playing again . . . either that or the GA gets deleted in every account.

I'm basically on all day. I play a few people, recruit some guys for my clan and go on the forums.

I play very rarely now. If I'm on, it's usually to chat. Every now and then I might play a game on Rev, though. Maybe once a month or so.

As for getting me to play more...You couldn't. I've just grown too bored of it to play it all the time. Maybe someday I'll play again. Though, I suppose I'm still a little addicted, as I can't help but log in every few days.

I went for the very rarely category. I come on TAO once in a while but mostly just to chat. Im on alot more during tourny time since thats the only time I really play. I also like to test ridiculous setups against my clan mates. :D

I'm usually on every night, unless I have a game or a date or something. I don't work, I go to school so my nites are usually open after practices. I probably play as many games as I can cram in in about an hour...hour and halves time.

I haven't played in months. I still love this place, but I've almost completely lost interest in the actual game. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's an incredible game, but the thrill is gone for me.
I'll probably always keep my gold and support TAO, regardless.

I pop in now and again. Normally in spurts where ppl will see me a bunch for a while, but then I disappear. I rarely play though, its mostly out of curiosity to see who is on. My reputation forces me to log on with alternate names though, which kinda sucks. I know what golds feel like when greys challenge them all the time...

And what are your grades like?
They're pretty high, A/A+ range all classes, but then again I didnt start TAO until this quarter, so this quarter's grades might be lower :l
But then again, I do keep myself from TAO when I have tests the next day, but I don't really control myself much on days when there's just homework.

I put very rarely. I am bored with the game to tell you the truth. I don't see myself getting any better so there's no point in trying to improve and playing the game is mostly not fun anymore. The community is what made it and I just haven't let go of that I guess.

I play a few games a week, but they aren't real games, just games with my mod account where I attack unsuspecting newb-golds. I also often go on to chat, or just to lurk on a server for a bit to make sure it's not under attack by spammers.

I haven't played an honest game in months. Why? Well, two reasons.

1) It's the same game for me. I played it, I had fun, but after a while, it's gotten to a likliness of an instruction booklet. (Round 1, Perform this move. Round 2, If opponent performed this, then perform this move, else, do this instead. etc...)

I'm not even sure if new units will turn me onto the game for me again. To me, it will just be more of the same, which isn't what I am looking for. There would have to be some major enhancement or change to make this game appealing, like a different set of rules, mechanics... I don't know.

Change is good.

Reason 2) Should be obvious. If it isn't, then you don't need to know anyways.

Havn't played on these servers for a long long while. Played Legends a lil few months back before I returned to being a staffer on me old Continuum.

I stopped playing when I realised how much this game actually relies on luck rather than the tactical sides of things. Blaze sort of sums it up for me. Took Twelve a while to come around to my thinking heh :P

There are time spurts where I try again to play .. for the most part I enjoy the forums as a way to pass time and use TAO as a chat client at work. All other forms are blocked.

The game.. there is no GAME anymore. I'll play matches from time to time to just stop reading stupid grey text in the lobby or to avoid dumb golds. Or cause a clanmate wants to learn or try something. Sometimes just because some has challanged me. But most times as new or unknown greys just to enjoy the game, it seems to be the only way to play.

The game is advertised as Turn Based Strategy Game. I don't believe thats true anymore. Its turn based, I'll give it that. But with the units that keep getting added, the only strategy left is a good setup. Blocking engine or randomization is really wacked too. In some of the earlier games things seemed more even.

When the game first came out is was great. Everyone kept asking for more units but I feel the more units added the worse this game got. Since the stoney not a single unit addition has been balanced or been a good trade optional. One unit type on the field easily gave that person an unequalled advantage, except the BR. The BR was the leveled addition. It could replace an already useful unit and just be slightly better. Its not a great unit but more like the orginial units. Having it on the field doesn't give you a huge advantage over the other player.

I really stopped playing when the ranking system switched. After spending hours playing and having one of the best records on the FPS severs they just switched to the new system and never gave any credit for the past three months. When I had to start over I no longer cared anymore. It was a rating, something I still feel is a bad way for this game to be handled. Now it takes just a few games to be ranked higher than someone who is much better than you. Game played don't matter as much.. but now with a ranking people rufuse to have games but 36 pts is a lot to recoup. Before a lose would tarish your record but you could easily go back and win again.. or beat another 50 ppl no probelm.

I think that sums up things better than I said it before. So what would make me play or stay.. If you could play.. "Classic TAO" Win-draws-losses and no new units after mud golem. and no second attack types.

I'm curious for your take on this. To what factor(s) would you attribute the decline in interesting content in the forums?

Realist
04-06-2005, 04:52 PM
1. Boring threads (at least to me).
2. Decline in quality posters replaced with relatively uninteresting posters.

I suspect it'll pick up again at some point for a while, but for now I'll just stay in the background for a bit.

I believe we're in agreement here. I wonder how much it can pick up though, because many of the 'new' ideas in threads by newer posters are rehashes of older posts and threads. Vets familiar with those tend to regard these in a bad light, and it shoots budding creativity in the foot.

I agree with both of you (Ceph and Real). I have been less interested in thr forums of late. I am pleased by the recent return of London, Hydrant, and Snork, but seem to have lost some of my fire for the forums. I'm sure it will come back. Part of the reason for me is that I am too busy right now to really keep track of what's going on. Maybe once my classes end, I'll have a bit more free time.

Until then, I'll float in the shadows, like a fine mist. Or maybe like another shadow, only slightly differently colored so as to generally blend in with the shadows, but yet still be mildly noticeable upon close inspection. Or maybe, I'll disguish myself as a tree of some sort _casting_ a shadow upon the original shadow, but being generally unobtrusive as people will be looking at the shadows and not at the things casting the shadows. That's it, a tree! Like maybe an elm or a birch. No one ever notices those.

I'm totally new! Actually, I think it's about time I shed that saying for a more "I'm fairly new" or something like that.

Agreed though, forums in general are lacking in fun material. Just for some reason I'm too lazy to always read through an entire thread just to miss one post, post the same thing as the one I missed, get flamed for it, and not really enjoy posting.

I love forums, and I'm not a critic, but things usually slowly die down. More crap needs to happen in the world so there can be some discussions on stuff that matters.

And I already know I'm boring. Don't say anything mmkay?

Jeffery

The posts really aren;t bad, but it really isn;t THAT hard to learn how to use the Search function to see if your great new thread idea has been done already. Most forums have the same standards that ask you to search before making a new thread, especially when you are brand new.

I think the main problem is how many new threads get made daily in GD. I leave for lunch and threads I was paying attention to are now on page two.. and by tomorrow they will be on page three. In the past threads that were created had longevity and people would think out what they were going to post and not just have IM conversations on the forums and waste endless space. Debates were real.

There was a story behind why people wrote things or at least a humor that was needed and people could join in.. Like TAO Phone Book, Three-word story, our religion threads, our anti-cybering threads, actually pictures, and what music are you listening threads. As mundane as they where, at least the conversation wasn't sour..

Clan warfare and attacking others was addressed in the right spots.. except PP and KOTR which drew attention everywhere. people like Wurtil, Rescorlian, and Northwind claiming to own the Northern Hemisphere, and Furious Angel and XYX with their Angst against the living. Hashish, Third, and Al starting useful threads about the going ons in America and Canada.. or at least a joke or two. A banner request thread, which was just that.. a request and fulfillment center, not a whorish wasteland of conversation.

Bills and DR reminding us stupidity wasn't a birthright but a poorly used gift. Bannings were more common.. and noobs might have run wild but it was into a brick wall of a Mighty Admins' fist.

Humor, true humor existed. We were introduced to badgers, Kenya, stick death, and many other forms of animated fart jokes. Yes, the posts are lacking.. Hell I'm even posting more, I use to be a sidelines guy reading and watching.. I was entertained. Now it just seems like a dumping ground.. I know because I do it do... Damn Band Wagoner. :sorry:

If you're around, then try to take the time to encourage those who are doing it. Most of the vets who would be inclined to flame would at least pause to give it some extra thought if you backed someone. I would do the same, but I'm never in on threads very quickly these days... except for the ones I start myself.
