View Full Version : How to Solve a Rubik's Cube

Ok Guys this is a sure-fire way to solve a Rubik’s Cube in just a couple of minutes (without removing the stickers).
Before we begin, there you need to learn the terms and the basics of cubing. The first thing you need to know is that you solve Rubik’s Cubes is rows-not sides (not colour by colour, if you don’t understand you will later). The next important point is that you need to see that each of the different cubes on the full cube have more than one colour (excluding the middles), therefore you will need to make sure you match up ALL of the correct colours on the sides, not just one colour. Remember; the middles of each side cannot move/change colours. On a proper cube, white will always be across from yellow, red from orange, and blue from green. The corners on the cube each have 3 colours on them, and the middle pieces on the sides, called edges have 2 colours.
Key- first letter (what you turn)
B-bottom (row)
L-left
R-right
M-middle
F-front/ face

Key- second letter (direction that you turn)
U-up
D-down
2-twice around (halfway-doesn’t matter what direction)
R-right
L-left

So without further ado, let us begin! Any other explanations will be explained as we get there.
1. The first step to solving a Rubik’s cube is to make a + on 1 side. Pick any colour you want-it doesn’t matter. For the sake of explanation, I will use white. This colour will be your top side.
To make a plus sign, first look on the underside (if white is top then yellow is bottom) and see if there are any white edge pieces there. If there are, look at the other colour on that (mini)cube (for example, white and red). Turn the bottom row so that the piece that is white and red has the red on the same side as the red middle. Then, turn the red face up twice (turn it twice towards the white side). If you don’t do it properly or you don’t understand, sont worry. Just practice. Try to look at it logically (if I want to get this here, how do I do it…). Do this step to all the top side’s edges on the bottom.
Most likely, not all of the edges will be on the bottom. Most will be on the other 4 sides. Once you find 1 of these, look at the other colour on that cube. Let’s say green. Line up the white and green piece to the green side. Make sure it’s on the bottom row. Now turn the bottom row once away from that side (left or right-doesn’t matter). Turn the white middle down (turn two columns down, then turn the one that’s not the middle back up). Turn the white and green piece back (so it is right under the white middle) and then turn the white middle back up. It’s easier then it sounds. If a edge is on the top row, turn the face the white is on twice so as to put it on the bottom row.
2. Filling in the corners. Again, look on the bottom row. Find a corner (white). Look at the other two colours on it (for example, red and green). Turn that corner so that the corner is between those two colours (at the bottom of the column where it should be). Have the face with the white corener with the white on it facing you. Sometimes the white will be in the bottom left, sometimes bottom right. Either way is fine. Turn the back two rows away from the side the corner is on (if it is in bottom left, turn the back 2 right, and vice-versa). Turn the corner up, and turn the back 2 rows back to the top. The whole time you must keep the topside in the top.
If you have a corner on the top row, hold the white side towards you. Imagine that the corner at the bottom of its column goes on top, and do the step. This will put the corner you want on the bottom row.
If you have a corner on the bottom, put it where it would go if it was on the bottom row. Do the same thing, but when turning the corner up, turn it up twice. This will put it on the bottom row.
Now look. If you did all this properly, not only will you have one face, you will also have one full row. If you are confused, don’t worry. The rest is much easier to explain.
3. The T-Formula. The next step is to get the middle row of your Rubik’s Cube. There is one formula that you do, the T-Formula.
Make a T on 1 side of your cube (not the bottom). Make sure that the other colour on that cube is not the bottom colour. Have the T face you with the top on the top.
If the piece is going left:
B-R
L-D
B-L
L-U
B-L
F-L
B-R
F-U
If the piece is going right:
B-L
R-D
B-R
R-U
B-R
F-R
B-L
F-U
If you find you are stuck/ that the piece you need is in its spot but in backwards, do the T formula with any edge piece (it doesn’t matter if it has the bottom colour on it) and put it in the spot in place of the correct piece. This, obviously, will remove that piece from the spot allowing you to put it in properly.
After you do this enough times, you will have the whole second row.

4. Bottom corners. The next step is to put in the corners in the bottom row. This is done with the linking formulas; Linking 1 and Linking 2. With these, you might need to play around with them to get all of the corners, there is not such a strict rule of where do there apply, or where you can or cannot use them.
Linking 1
L-D
B-L
R-D
B-R
L-U
B-L
R-U
Linking 2
R-D
B-L
R-U
B-L
R-D
B-2
R-U
If you have one corner with the bottom colour on the bottom, turn it to its correct place, and put it in the front of your left hand and do Linking 2. You should see a bottom colour facing you in the bottom right. If you don’t, hold the correct corner in your right hand in the front and do linking two opposite ways( L-D, B-R, L-U, B-R, L-D, B-2, L-U)
If you have no corners, you can do either, but I like to do Linking 1.
If you have two corners with that both have the same colour on one side, turn them to the correct side they are (so that that side will have only the bottom edge missing) put the side in your left hand, do Linking 1, turn the bottom twice, then do Linking 2 with the two corners (they wont be on the bottom) in your left hand.
If you have all 4 corners on the bottom but not in the correct spots, find two that have the same colour, put them in your left hand, do Linking 1, turn twice, then do Linking 2 with the correct corner in the front of your left hand. If none share the same colour on one side, do this with any side you like.
NOTE: THESE SCENARIOS MIGHT NOT ALWAYS WORK. THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO PLAY AROUIND WITH THEMAND YOU EVENTUALLY WILL FIND WHAT WORKS.

About 2 years ago my highschool had a mini class on puzzle solving including rubicks cube. I wasnt in it, but those damn cubes were everywhere

i got myself one and tooled around with it for a week or so... managed to get the bottom two rows, but could not for the life of me get the top...

so I had a guy from the class show me

my best time is about 3 mins

5. Finishing the cube. There are 4 formulas to finish the cube. You might need to use 1 or 2, or all of them. Each cube is different and each time you solve it it will be different.

Finishing Move
The finishing move is probably the most commonly used end-formula. If you have 1 full side complete (besides the top, so really you have 2 complete sides) have that side facing you when you do the finishing move. If you do not know what formula to use, I usually use this one.
The finishing move takes the middle edge piece in your left hand and puts it in the middle edge of your right hand. It also takes the middle edge piece from your right hand and puts it in the back, but flips it upside-down (so if in your right hand the green edge piece was underneath and the yellow was on the side, the yellow will end up in the back underneath with the green on the side). This also happens the middle edge piece in the back (it flips) but this ends up in your left hand.
Double Move
You use the double move is done when you have 2 complete sides that touch each other (so really you have 3 complete sides). You have one of the complete sides facing you, and the other one is in your right hand. Once you do the double move, the side in your right hand will still be complete. Do the finishing move with that complete side facing you. This and the finishing move are most commonly used.
Longer Finishing Move
This formula is used when you have 2 complete sides (and the top, so really 3 complete sides) but they are not touching each other. They are across from each other (like red and orange). You have the complete sides in each hand; one in your left and one in your right, so you do it with an incomplete side facing you.
4-Flip
This is probably the least common formula used. It is used when no sides are complete and all of the sides’ colours are on the bottom (so none of the edge pieces on the bottom are the bottom’s colour). Since all the sides are like this, it doesn’t matter what side is facing you.
Once you do the 4-flip, do the finishing move (with the completed side facing you).
Solving a Rubik’s Cube takes practice. Although it takes a lot of memorizing, it really isnt difficult to solve at all! If it doesn’t work the first time, don’t worry. Keep practicing and eventually you will get it right. The more you do it, the faster and easier it will be. Now you can impress all your friends by solving it!

Liz's way to solve a Rubik's cube:
1. Remove sticker
2. Get super glue
3. Put glue on sticker
4. Put sticker on cube
5. Repeat until all colors are on the same side.

I actaully know about these things. Fastest I've ever solves my rubix cube was a 52 seconds. I don't know if I'm dyslexic or just have some certain nack for doing them but peeling off the coloured stickers and putting them back on the right side just comes so naturally to me.

I did it too. I had borrowed the Rubik's cube from my 6th grade english class. I brought it back into school, showed my teacher, and she flipped out. She went around the school and told a bunch of teachers how smart I was! Heh, when I told her I cheated, imagine the reaction I got from her...

---you dont need a knife, I can do it with my hands. Just twist it one way but only half a turn, then turn it hard the other wayand *poof* a middle piece pops out and so do the corners, and other edges.... I had a two by two. I put it in the bottom of my bag and when i opened it, the whole thing was broken to the core. Ever seen the core of a Rubik's Cube??...

I can do that too.

When my hand is under the table, I rip off the stickers, and put them in the right places. Thus, it takes less than a miniute to do, and everyone thinks your awesome.

EDIT : Damn, someone already mentioned that. But, it's cool anyway.

I have been wanting to learn how to do a rubik's cube for years, but I refuse to learn from someone who already knows, and I refuse to look it up. If I'm going to solve it, I'm going to do it on my own.

Unfortunately, I've never had a rubik's cube in my hand for more than about 3 minutes. But if I ever do! I'm going to solve that bad boy all on my own brain muscle.
