View Full Version : Cures for insomnia...

Megabyte

I've had a slight case of insomnia since Thurs.

Currently hitting the 80'th hour since sleep.
This happens sometimes in the student/musician lifestyle, and I'm not overly concerned about it.

My cures for insomenia:
-Good jog EARLY in the morning. Its about 5:30 am here. I'd already be jogging if it were brighter out. I'll give it 30 more minutes, then do a 10k probably. Other vigorous excercise can also do this. The sheer exhaustion pushes out the insomnia.
- Intellectual stimulation and snacking. Whatever the health ppl say, nothing cures it for me better then doing a little reading/work and having a snack then crashing.

However, these systems havn't been effective the last 3 days. Are there any suggestions out there?

edit: 2 things,
1. No, I'm not simply asking here out of random desperation. I've put this on a few boards I frequent where there are college aged people. They are more knowing and sometimes have some good ideas.
2. No, I'm not seeing a doctor unless it lasts till Tues...mostly because I hav to do a performance on Wed and need to sleep Tues.

Wow. This thread has been taken over by spammers. I'm sorry meg.

People! If you don't have any actual knowledge on the topic, and no helpful advice, don't respond! Seriously. It just makes you look really stupid.

Having said that, I've never had any trouble sleeping, and therefore don't know much about curing insomnia. Are you even looking at pills (Have you tried them?)? Or are you just looking at relatively natural methods.

You should not worry about sleeping pills, you need to find some chill pills first. Hateful.

As a true insomniac, I simply stay awake until I fall asleep. Of course, this means 5-6 hours sleep at most, and some days none at all.

Well, i've been an insomniac for about 7 years now, and I sleep on average every 2 - 2 1/2 days. Sometimes I have spells where I actually sleep alot....it's wierd.

I wasn't specifically addressing you, nothing. I was referring to:

"ck1, your banner is freakin awsome...

and the like. I didn't find my post to be hateful. Perhaps scathing, but rightly so. This is a slightly serious thread, and therefore deserves slightly serious answers. If you want to post something silly, that's perfectly fine. Just go to the Three Word Story, or somewhere similar.

Edit: There. I edited it some. Is it nice enough?

I've had a little trouble with insomnia, but I try to keep a fairly regular schedule, so I just lie in bed until I fall asleep. It's boring as heck, and sometimes I'm just staring, thinking, wriggling uncomfortably, until 4 AM, but eventually I fall asleep. Sometimes it's the same way the next night, but as long as I get a couple hours, I feel like I've done something.

Don't eat too much (and stay away from alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine) before going to bed, but don't go on an empty stomach. If you have a snack, wait about 30 minutes before trying to go to bed. Try some chamomile or catnip tea, and I've heard that warm milk really does do wonders. Siberian Ginseng is apparently good for sleep disorders, if you feel like a run to the health food or drug store.

If you want to go all out, go get some special oil from bath and body works, and do a little aromatherapy in your bath tub. If you end up falling asleep in the tub, well at least you're asleep :).

And I'm spent.

Rawr, 100 hours now sleepless!!

wow, I didn't look in on this thread today, it got a lot of posts..and little topic, huzzah!

Anyways, yeah..pills. I'm anti-medication for a variety of reasons. I refuse to take 'em unless I absolutely must. Which means if I go to the doctor and he says this is the way to cure it...then I'll do it then (maybe). But, until that point, pills are out.

Yeah, caffeine has been out. And I don't smoke anymore, so thats out too. Oh well, I'm actually feeling kinda sleepy today, so maybe I'll be able to crash in a bit.

I'm having a little trouble myself tonight, but I think it's mostly just that I don't feel like going to bed yet. I let ach go to sleep because he has to work early tomorrow, and now is getting 4 hours of sleep before a 16 hour day, and I even shut off aim so I wouldn't keep him up.

Of course now that I've done that I have no one to talk to -.-

For some reason, just watching tv will usually get me asleep. I think it's the sound, I like falling asleep to sound. Not annoying sound, just... sound.
Tried listening to music while attempting to go to sleep? That works for me as well. I guess I just fall asleep to sound.

Not sure if that works with insomnia, as I don't think I've ever really experienced that.

Yes, lack of sleep is never good for things where you're expected to pay attention.

My boss is going to make fun of me again tomorrow. :(

I'm constantly daydreaming as it is, and when I get too little sleep I tend to forget that I'm around people, and occasionally just stare at nothing, ignoring people who are talking to me, etc.

Yes I know, it's called ADD. Whatever.

Try melatonin, safest sleep aid there is, avoid taking Tylenol PM for a sleep aid, excess amounts of acetaminophen over a period of time isn't good for your liver. If you do go for a sleep aid, usually near Tylenol PM is just the 'PM' drugs which is basically an antihistamine. Doxylamine is probably the best. If those fail, see your doctor about getting a script for Ambien CR or any time released Zolpidem.

I have sleep insomnia. Regardless of how much I work or how long I'm at the gym, I'll only get 3 or 4 hours of sleep without some sort of aid. I've moved over to melatonin and it works quite well for me. Make sure you can get at least 7 hours for sleep time though or it will be quite rough to wake up the next morning, as with most sleep aids.

Tama Drummer
02-01-2010, 05:06 AM
yea, trying to stay up like that usually backfires for me.

but my sleep schedule gets f-ed every weekend. during the week i'm usually sleeping around 10am-5pm. but weekends are w/e... usually i fall asleep much earlier, but then i wake up randomly after just a few hours or something.

so i guess i'm the opposite of most people? I usually get a good amount of sleep during the week, but then weekends tend to be somewhat sleep deprived. 'bout two weeks ago, I slept maybe six hours between 6pm Friday and 9am Monday.

Melatonin is a drug produced by the pineal gland naturally and helps regulate many things including the circadian rythme among other things. Its usually used to help those that are traveling to get over jet lag but it has really been helpful for my insomnia. The first few nights u might MIGHT have a night terror but it rarely happens. Just get the low dosage and try taking it about an hour before you want to sleep. Its and OTC drug and is not that expensive. There is also a sight chance of addiction as with most drugs but if u do decide to take it, make sure u will will be able to get at least 8 hours of sleep. It worked for me thought I'd share...good luck with ur problems.

Depends really. We don't know how your sleep schedule is.

If you go to sleep at 5am and wake up at 3pm, then you really don't have insomnia. Just a shitty sleeping schedule you should fix. Do you exercise to waste energy, ect.

If you're having trouble falling asleep after being up since like, 7am-5am the next day, then you may have a problem.

Honestly... I have hard time falling asleep myself, its 5:47am right now...

when ever I try to stay up till a decent bedtime I fall asleep early and end up waking up in the middle of the night...

Also If I just try to lay in bed intill I try to sleep, I get restless legs...

Pills, ones that are sopose to put me to sleep, make me hyper...

Considered insomniac? Yes

Things I can do? Nothing just suck it up and deal with it...

btw, usually i fall asleep naturally. like, i'll chill in bed and eventually get tired and stop doing whatever i'm doing and go to sleep. but yesterday when i went to sleep, i was 100% sober for a change and actually tried to get to sleep earlier. and i think i realized that it's all mental.

when i lay down and try to sleep earlier, my mind is just constantly thinking "go to sleep, fall asleep, go to sleep now." i get so focused on wanting to sleep, that it actually keeps my mind from drifting off and sleeping. i dunno how i ended up doing it, but try just not thinking about that (or anything). once i managed to stop thinking about falling asleep, i dozed off quite fast. just something to try, maybe. although i don't know how you can try it... so yea. idk i'm just bored and trying to waste time before i leave. :)
