The answer is nothing.

I was looking for a good excuse because I don't like the trend of calling everything offensive these days, but I really don't see any justification whatsoever...not that its such an important issue, I just don't see any value in having it there.

I don't mind a neg rep if it's signed. Someone that doesn't sign a neg rep is a coward, it isn't about my precious 2 rep points that are gone.

I halfway agree with you. I just want things to be a little... friendlier around here. If the rep dosen't matter, then neither should the comment associated with it, therefore, it shouldn't matter if it's anon or not, ergo, not worth your effort to reply in that fashion.

Not that I really care but i would like to point out that I was using a common linguistic device known as "sarcasm."

"Sarcasm" is commonly found on the TAO community forums, both to make fun of people, and ideas.

While we are on the subject, why is this one still called a "smilie?" :roulette:

It doesn't seem like something that would make a normal person smile. Jeffrey maybe, but not normal people...

xerent
05-17-2005, 10:49 AM
The fact that it's a smiley is irrelevant. It's still communicating an idea (One that some people find offensive) and it dosen't matter what media that idea takes place in.

Here's an idea, Lets depict the Holocaust as an entertaining event. If it's in the form of smileys, then it's OK.

See what I mean?

sub the hendrix
05-17-2005, 10:51 AM
Which is why I don't particularly like the violent smilies. I don't, however, see mamba as particularly offensive, especially because I can safely guess it was not created with malicious intent.

I have a theory.

Someone says offensive and offended, and people get this idea that they are offended...

by a smilie...

Then someone like me slaps them and tells them to grow up.

Of course, the forum genius comes along, whom I can't argue with because I respect the guy and he always has a good point, so I guess I just have to sit here and be me.

Do you think ninjas mind that we use a highly representational symbol of them so often in today's society?

You know. Some ninjas might mind very much.

You're halfway right. It does seem like such a silly thing. Our culture mocks many different facets of cultures for the purposes of entertainment. Either we're de-sensitized, or it truely isn't all that big of a deal.

However, just because you and I find it silly dosen't mean we shouldn't honor someone else's (forseeably legitimate) complaint if it rubs them the wrong way.

But if we do this on every single instance, we're left with stale forums in a pristine enviroment. Not my idea of a community.

Are we telling people to lighten up on an issue that may be holy to them? Is that OK to do for the sake of avoiding sterility?

Maybe it's up to the end user to know that the world does not reflect their views on the way things should work. But that dosen't give us free will to do whatever we want on the premise of 'Well if they don't like it, they can go somewhere else', because this is a community, and being aware of one another is something that makes a community.

The obvious answer is some sort of middle ground. People need to realize that anything they find offensive isn't there for the sake of offending them. It's there because of another reason... most often one of humor. The community also needs to realize that there are many views on many subjects, and although free discussion is encouraged, that one shouldn't say anything offensive for the sake of offending anyone.

I like that answer.

All this over a smilie. ^_^.

Well I'll tell you what. If anyone has a problem with a particular smilie, they can send me a PM, and I'll help em out. I'll either:

a) find new forums for them to enjoy that are pristine and smilie free OR

b) send them a series of links to download firefox and a few select extensions.
