I was just wondering how some players can have an arena occupied but when someone else joins the arena the battle doesnt automatically start. I would like to know how to do this because I am tired of waiting for friends to join and someone else joining in and me having to surrender and lose stats.

The delay you see sometimes between when an arena is entered, and the game actually begins, is actually a side effect of Lag in the server and internet.
Quite simply, until the green text comes up saying who has been selected to go first, the Lobby and Exit buttons are still available. If you hit either, close the window, or refresh the window before the first turn is assigned, then the game is not considered started, and no points are lost or won.
but you have a narrow time period to do that in.

When a battle is over, sometimes one person hasn't left yet, their avatar is shown on the tile, but as far as the system is concerned, the game is not yet over.

Most of the time it is what devilin said. The game has ended but someone hasn't left and you still see their avatar. However sometimes what Jeffery said is what happend. I think though they should have like an "abort" button that way if you get in a match and the guy just hasn't left you can leave and look for a new game.
