Golden Oak [contraption]
Description- The Golden Oak is a sacred tree located near a small river, as legends say. It sprinkles the good with peace and the evil with hatred. Be warned..
Appearance- A tall oak tree with a golden-yellow tint. It has orange-ish leaves, some on the ground.
Health- 56
Blocking- 100%
Armor- 15
Movement- No movement.
Attack- When a friendly unit walks within 2 spaces of the golden oak, it automatically heals 8 health. Although when an opponent's unit walks within two spaces of the Golden Oak, it receives 8 damage. The damage is initial and both friendly and enemy units would have to come back near the oak to get the damage or to get healed again.
Recovery time- None. This unit can not officially attack, see above.
Additional Information- This unit can not be hit be a ranged attack from 4 or more spaces away.

Hey, this is pretty sweet and obviously someone with your username must create a tree of some kind. It isn't incredibly creative but it's pretty original. Nice job.

Thanks, Mith. And what do you mean by the "Someone on your username must create a tree?" I ain't plantin' no trees!

Haha now I get it... der..... wow I'm dumb...
do units gain 8 health every turn? or only when they leave and come back?
this would be quite ill in turtle games
Forest_Archer
07-13-2005, 12:23 PM
Noda, the damage is initial, so the units would have to come back to get damage or to get healed. By the way guys, is this a pretty even unit? I'm still not sure..

It looks pretty good, but it feels like an open target. People would be inclined to sit back and take shots with the low blocking until this unit died.
Maybe I'm comparing it too much like the LW. Perhaps if you put it in the back, especially with turtle formations, it would be a nice unit.
I dunno really. I've been out of the game too long in all truth. ^_^.

You owe me big I thought I woud l never post in a CAU.
Okay here are the probelms I see...First off great unit. The concept is good. Lets look at the draw back first.
The blocking and armor. I knwo you reduced them because I said I think you should.. but I think it should be considered an always active Ward so blocking would have to be zero. I know you said branches could stop attack (side conversation)
but i think it shoud bae able to be attacked.
15 Armor is a little. Your basically trying to make this ward stay on the field for a long time.
How about range? three squares? two or one.. I think it has to be one of those. and three as I explained woudl cause problems.
Ig you had two trees across from each other would they hurt the tree on first turn.. cause they occupy the square? or do objects actually have to move into the area. First turn would be tricky. Unless you say.. have to move.
But back to two trees beeing near each other.. as players this would then just be a blocking device.. cause if one heals.. and one hurts.. it negates.
To resolve this I would have a heal/hurt of 8-6-4 or 10-8-6 the closer you get the more damage.. or the more heal.
But i gotta admit I like the idea. ;)
Forest_Archer

I think it should be the "have to move into range" option, Mel.
I don't want this unit to be too complicated though, so the amount of damage or healing will stay the same for now, whether the unit is 2 or 1 space away.
Some strategy for this unit would be to place it near the back of your formation, as xerent cleverly stated. That way, once you take out your opponent's range units, your opponent will attack your Golden Oak with a knight, assassin, beast rider, etc. Then poison the units that are close to your Golden Oak so they will 1.) take damage from poison and 2.) have to move out of poison and move back into the Golden Oak's range.
Now I have a question- Is it the wards only or contraptions in general that do not need to be killed to win a battle? The reason I'm saying this is so that units will be forced to kill the Golden Oak to win.
Note that I have added some "additional info" on my unit's details
(see bottom of opening post)

I don't know what the actual rule is but it seems like this should be a non endgame unit.
Let me know when you're done revising it, I'll put it up for voting in the committee.

Thanks, Mith, though I'll wait for a few more replies.
By the way, how does that voting thing work? What happens if you get the most amount of votes..?
Mithrandir
07-13-2005, 04:10 PM
If 50% or more of the committee votes yes on your unit (which basically means it's an overall very good unit in the areas of originality, creativity, balance, abuse potential, understandability and tactical usage), it's certified gold and if you want to, you can join the committee and become a judge and vote on units yourself.

WHOA..I must not have been the CAU forum in a while..whats this about?
FA, I like the idea, but I think the 4 range thing is a problem..it means units have to get really close to attack it...

actually it'd not be too difficult to kill it, provided you're using a mage. dmws or pyros(dsm) could hit it without getting damaged.

Okay, Mith, put this on one of those polls.
Will you include a link too, please, Mith? Also, I would like this topic to still be open. I might sound a little demanding.. I'm sorry for that, but one more question- Voters will have to look at the topic before voting no correct? (They can't just look at the name..)
Thanks.

Judges don’t vote on units they haven’t read, don’t worry.
I always post links with the title of the unit, yours will be no exception.
Good luck. :)

The blocking is now 100%, like a traditional contraption, just to make Mith happy.

I'm very impressed, I think this is a very creative and original idea. Great Job!
Can you have more than one tree?
(ie, you can win mudgolems in drops, but you cannot win dragons)
I also think this would be very cool as a moving unit, sort of lumbering, Furgon-like, who (if an enemy unit is targeted) does 8 damage, or (if a friendly unit is targeted) heals 8 HP. Very interesting.

Well I used the Scientific Law that trees can't move on their own in this unit, but I guess It'd be cool.
If, say, this was made into a unit, it probably shouldn't be available in drops because everywhere you'd go, you'd take damage or heal. ;)

Thanks, Bob, though I don't think any of the Create-A-Units will be made into a gold unit, though I think moderators may be inspired!
I think it shood has 0 blocking s poop slinger said and I agree with the 3 area attack pattern is also a good idea but what I dont understand is the attack and the initaial damage stuff pls explain
I think it is ok but I agree with Poop SLinger and the armor should be 0 it it a freaking tree and the armor should be dropped to like 10 also i dont understand the attack PLS explain

If you'd been around here as long as I have you'd know what I mean. Yours is a good version of an old idea that has been done before. Also, compare it to most of the gold certified units. It just isn't as creative.
Forest_Archer
07-29-2005, 04:37 PM
True, I guess it isn't very creative compared to them. Mith do units have to have long descriptions? Would that give judges an extra reason to like a unit?
Mithrandir
07-29-2005, 04:41 PM
Good question. It actually depends on the description. Length for the sake of length is a bad idea, work with the unit and figure out if there's more you can add to it. To answer your question more directly, it DOES matter to me as long as the unit isn't becoming worse due to the length. A short unit is something that most people could probably think of, a complex unit takes more creativity, IN A GENERAL SENSE. So if you put a lot of work into a unit and you make sure things fit together well, it's balanced, explained well, is a good concept and is original, you ought to be in good shape. Notice the four platinum units are all complicated. It isn't a tight rule that short units can't be platinum but naturally, it makes sense that it turned out that way.

Thanks! That helped me a lot.
Another question that I feel like asking in general is "How can I make my unit appealing at first sight?"
My most recent unit, the Timowa Player, has gotten few clicks and only 5 responses (Including my own.) I don't think the name is extremely bland and I feel like a noob putting side smilies on the title. Any suggestions?

CAU is dominated by newbies these days. These newbies ALWAYS seem to type "WOW, gr8 uunitt!11!!!", without explaining why they think it's great. I miss the good old days, where my units had 3 to 4 pages. Now, basically only Mith replies to my units.

I think titles ought to be more descriptive. I have no idea what in the world a timowa player would be. But that’s just me.
Your question about how to make it appealing on first sight is not easy to answer. I’ve made some brief comments on a bunch of my units before even giving the stats. You can take a look at some examples by going through my archive. I don’t really know what else to tell you, besides never put the stupid smilies on the side. I think that’s really lame, personally.
I wouldn't worry too much about it, CAU is still slow right now.

I didnt read all the posts. So if someone menchaned this. Sorry. It would be cool if you made the damage get higher as you get closer to it. Like earth. The closer you get to the core. The hotter it gets. So lets say the first row is 2hp then 4 etc. Just wondering if anyone likes it

Sorry, we're done discussing the unit, but thanks for the advice anyway!
Woger- Was that a diss? lol. Like were you calling me a noob?
Mith- I called it "Timowa Player" because of common human curiousity. People would wonder "What's that! I wanna find out!" and then they would read my unit.. oh well. I'm not very original when it comes to names of units anyway..
Mithrandir
07-30-2005, 09:25 AM
In theory, the curiosity thing would work. But in reality, for me anyway, it just turns me off from reading it.
