Upon seeing that there are, indeed, others like myself who indulge in the Dramatic Arts, I wanted to make a thread to discuss shows, that you are in, a part of, or want to see, or have seen. Broadway or off. Famous or just getting started. Also people who just like theatre can talk here too. Basically its the TAO Sisterhood, but the TAO Thespianhood.

I worked and wired the lights for four years in high school and almost decided to do it as a profession. I even worked some showed put on by a few friends of mine downtown. Those were good times. I also did a bunch of sound work. (Hence Godmic)
Anyway, the best show I've ever worked on was "Gently into the Night" by a friend of mine, Jeremy Lee. It was put on in the Bug Theatre downtown and the set was brilliant for such a small theatre. Matt Swerdzewski is an amazing designer. Anyway, it was an extremely well done drama/comedy, but had some music and a full band all written by the people in the play with Lee. It was an amazing show.
Sure, I've done other big name shows, but that was by far the best.

Well I have always enjoyed the life of a thespian, even when I was in kindergarten. Something about being on stage made me want to act even crazier then I already was! It has only been recently tho, that I have been involved in the theatre at my school. so far I have been in two high school productions(i only count these productions, because everything else I did before that was crap). One play and one musical, and now that i have experienced this i hope to study it in college as a minor. :jester:

Well now you know why my name is "Lipsoidal" too. Its a stage light. I had to decide between Lipsoidal and Frenel. Anyways, right now im working on a script being performed for PCS. (Portland Center Stage) for the JAW West Festival. We open tomarrow evening.
Also, at the moment, I REALLY want to see Avenue Q. Ive basically memorized the music, and teh characters and all, but just havent seen it. Im thinking about downloading a bootlegged copy. It will probably run another 5 years, but i want to see original cast, and probably wont be able too. As for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Spamalot, those can wait, though i want too see them as well. The Lion King is comign to Portland in a month or so, and I am much looking forward to that.
On a side note: Because of the hilarity of Avenue Q, personally, i think it would be better acted with real people, rather then puppets. Only problem is you cant really find another real person to look like Gary Coleman, no matter how much makeup you put on. The woman who is his puppets voice, sounds just like him though, and the stars could hear her singing.

Heh. It's Ellipsoidal and Fresnel. But, if I would of known you had the s/n Lipsoidal, I would have gotten the reference. Parkan would have been a good one as well. Or Source4. I could go on for pages with theatre references. :p

I really had no choice when it came down to theatre, and performances. All of my sisters are in theatre and take dancing lessons. That means, I have to be there for every competition, performance, and recital.
I figured if I was going to be there, I had to keep myself busy. I started by working the soundboard. After I became bored of that (no pun intended), I did the curtains and lights (you can meet a lot of hotties working the curtains), and eventually became the guy who filled in for anyone doing anything - even ushering.
It's grown on me. ;)

Just finished a show called "Dirty Story." Interesting show - very political. Its was fun to see the expressions and reactiosn of different audiences. Some caught on more quickly.
Also, just had one of my plays done professionally in a reading on Portland Center Stage for the second time.
The last stage (pun intended) of my theatre life at the moment is that I just was interviewed by my local newspaper for my role as John Proctor in high school, for a reunion article. And considering I'm one of the few theatre buffs from my school still in the area, It was awesome to be addressed.
Yes, for those keeping track, I was bragging.

Well, I can see why people would like it, but I personally hated all of the characters, the only character I started to like was Mary whatever, Proctor's servant, but then she crawls back to Abigail and right back into my disdain. Oh, no, Reverand Hale kicked butt. I forgot about him, he rocked, but at the same time, not enough to make that play all that great.

I only really did theater in high school. Loved it though. Did Fiddler on the Roof, Westside Story, Hamlet, and we did a version of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (which sucked in my opinion). And i worked the lighting board for the local theater group Stage M when they did Little Shop of Horrors. Now that one was fun. Most of the kids in the after school drama club were the goth kids. Thank god we didnt have the poser Emo kids in drama. "I hate my life, cuz my parents took away my Good Charlotte cd's, so i cut my wrists today, but then i stopped cuz i didnt want to get the blood on my new jeans that i bought at Hot Topic." Sorry, that was off topic, i should put my emo rant somewhere else.

My school did a production of that this year. Sadly, I didn't get into it.
I just did "Little Me" by Neil Simon, and now I'm doing a mystery dinner theater called "My Fatal Valentine". I'll be auditioning for "Godspell" on Wednesday. :)

Well, I am in a little bit of a pickle. I am doing spotlight for Peter Pan. I also have to do Tinkerbell. (She is a powerful green laser pointer).
We have intelligent lighting in this show, and they have there own light board. The IL light board is diffren't than a normal lightboard. I do not know how to use the IL lightboard.
The IL board operator called me a couple minutes ago, and said she had work tomarrow and friday and asked if I could do the IL board. IU said yes, and she gave me a quik breifing on how to use it over the phone. Wellll..... the cues for the IL are the same time for the cues for spot and tinkerbell. So I need to find someone to do tinkerbell and spotlight by tomarrow at 8:15 am.

Might it be easier to find someone to do the IL board, since you already KNOW your your role. If you take IL board, then you have inexperience on both stations......
It;s usually easier to train one person in a crash course than two.

I just had to post this story here.
I just went to Rutgers College to see the play Macbett (yes, it's spelled correctly). Which was a parody of "Macbeth"
It was pretty funny, extremely random. Well, in the end of the scene where the king is healing everyone, the fire alarm lights go off. My friends and I were like, is that part of the show?
It turns out it wasn't. There was an actual fire and we had to evacuate and leave the campus before the play was over.
I decided it was because someone obviously said "Macbeth" and didn't jump up and down three times on one foot, spit over their shoulder, and cuss. ;)

Hahahaha, That's hilarious and ironic.
I won Best Supporting Actor in a Play I was in when I was in High School.
I can't remember the play but it was based upon a trial in a courtroom and it just left you hanging in the end on whether the person was guilty or not. Lot of hardwork, but a lot of fun too.
I was the Detective.

So I'm in a Drama competition in March, and I need one of each of the following categories:
Comedic monologue
Comedic pair (2 people, one boy and one girl)
I'm already doing an improvisation scene and a dramatic monologue (I have 3 in mind that I'm looking at.)
If anyone has any suggestions please just tell me. I'm desparate because I need them by Thursday.

Comedic monologues for women are hard to find. I would reccomend looking up Oscar Wild monologues, he makes well-developed, funny female characters. There's a delightful one in "The Ideal Husband," and I'm sure you can find some other from Oscar if it doesnt suit your fancy.
As for a 2 person scene (boy/girl), these are relatively easy to find. Whats the time frame?
mushroom_girl
01-27-2007, 09:24 PM
I actually saw a scene from "The Ideal Husband." It looked interesting. :)
5 minutes for monologues, 10 minutes for pairs.
For dramatic I'm thinking of:
"Daddy's Laugh" --Kelly Campbell
"Invisible Friends" --Alan Ayckbourn
"Nuts" --Tom Topor
...I just gotta make sure that they're published work.

01-27-2007, 09:30 PM
5 minutes?! That's ass-ery! The widespread norm of audition monologues is 1:30! Your state is dumb.
10 minute scene is a bit longer than I anticipated, also. Stick with Wilde for the monologue, you can find a 5 minute one or stretch it. But, unfortunately, a two person, 10 minute "scene" qualifies, to me, as a one act. You wotn find anything 10 minutes long unless its from a movie (DO NOT DO THIS) online. You need to look in a book. And, from my experiences, "scene" books blow, but "short one act" books rock. Look at some David Ives or Neil Simon. Both have very funny, short 2 person one acts. Ives - the "Philadelphia" (originally 2 males, but could be altered), Simon, look in his "Hotel Suite" collection. Comic gold.
Or, if author isnt working out, check out a Humana Festival collections book. There are some outstanding short plays in there (obviously... it is the Humana Festival).

"Invisible Friends" is moderately overdone, but not as bad. And I havent read "Daddy's Laugh," but if it's about rape or molestation or suicide, don't do it.

"Daddy's Laugh" isn't about that lol. I wouldn't do it if it was.
It's about a girl growing up, and the jokes that her dad made when she was young weren't making her laugh anymore. She felt like she disappointed him, and I get a feeling that he died because she's so upset and thinking about it.
If you can think of anything better it would be nice. I thought about doing "Audition" but my friend just won an award for it yesterday, so I don't want to do it too.
