I didn't realize we were talking about rappers with a message. There is a big difference between being a lyricist and someone "preaching". I agree that many of those you listed are very good. But I don't consider them all "rappers".

Oooh yay, remixes!!! Taking a song and putting a new, maybe even better musical track to it. The remix was invented to make more money, bottom line. It's a way to package a song so that people think it's new and pay more money for it, but takes the least effort possible.

I am not bashing the mainstream rappers entirely, they make stuff that is fun to dance to or bump in the car, but has no actual substance. Jay-Z made The Blueprint, Tha Black Album (both good albums), and then mostly a bunch of crap other than those two albums. "H to the izzO, V to the izzA"? Thats just lame.

Not everyone I mentioned is a "rapper", but they are all Hip Hop artists. Hip hop is a wide ranging art form with many elements. Hip Hop has intelligence and wit, while rap nearly requires the ability to yell "From the window!!" somewhat in time with a beat.

Sorry, but the arguement that Jay-Z is good because he remixed his whole album with Linkin Park (who are a pile of crap by the way) is one of he worst arguements I have ever heard. You want to mention why Jay-Z is good? Look to "Two 22's" or "Coming of Age". Don't look to "Hard Knock Life" or remixes ith poor rock bands. If you want to heara a cool version of "The Black Album" download "The Grey Album" which mixes Jay-Z with "The White Album" by the Beatles.

Basically, please step out of the box with Hip Hop and music in general, there is so much more out there than the stuff you have been told to like

Legacy, I will suppose most of that post wasn't really directed at me. B/C again I think there is a big difference in what you and I are talking about. And trust me, I listen to some mainstream stuff, but I am far outside of what "I am told to like".

As far as the "remix" argument, I was rather disappointed with Collision Course. I thought the Grey Album blew CC out of the water. I do take acception to your statement that most of what Jay-Z put out is crap. Sorry, but there is so much good substance to the guy other than The Black Album and Blueprint.

Quite a lot of it is music. There is a lot of spoken word stuff, but most of the best hip hop material doesn't make it onto the radio in heavy rotation like the club anthems. Dead Prez, Paris, Talieb, Common, J5 all have zero to very light radio rotation, despite the fact that they are skilled MCs with things of value to say. There are miles of others who never make it onto the airwaves because the average listener would rather hear about Crystal, 24 inch rims, and bustin' caps than listen to an artist with actual substance.

That's sort of an odd question that will take time for me to think about. Since hip hop is such a free flowing art form with so many elements, it's hard to find a Hip Hop "poster child". Rap is a little easier. Lil' Jon. He personifies the worst things about the rap world, he is basically a rap caricature. Little skill and nothing worth saying.

I've reserved myself to the fact that I have a different opinion about this matter.

Actually I think Lil Jon doesn't personify rap as a whole. Lil Jon is more of a producer that yeah, adds a little to some of his work, but hardly is the poster boy for rap or everything that is wrong with it.

And yeah, I love the dirty south rap scene. I love just about every genre of music other than country, but I will make exceptions even in that area from time to time. Such as Willie Nelson's Country Man. Wow, that is a great album.

I have to admit....when i went to Chicago (for the season opener) I was amazed at how nice the people in the city were. I mean if you bumped into someone, they'd say 'excuse me' before you could. I feel in love with Chi-town, but i do rate in 2nd...behind Boston (what can you expect). I city i've disliked teh most has been Philly. Everyone there were complete assholes. Every single bar we went to, we heard people talking behind our backs. Altough the city itslef is beautiful.

Random, completely off-topic post:

Our IM (intramural) football team just won our 1st game of the season, against the other team from the law school!

It was crap all the way...the administration lost our paperwork, so only 4 guys were technically eligible. We managed to talk them up to 7, which meant that all of us had to play the whole game both ways (it's 7-on-7). So with the refs already pissed off, we start the game.

Our defense falters early, and we go down 13-0. Then we make some adjustments on both sides of the ball, and enter halftime at 13-6, thanks to a monstrous catch from our wideout.

2nd half contains some BULLSHIT ('scuse me) calls from the officials, and incredible poor sportsmanship from the other team. Nevertheless, our defense holds steady, and with 5 minutes left, our offense finds itself on 4th down deep in our own territory. Instead of punting, our QB decides to take a risk, and hits our wideout for a HUGE gain, down into their red zone!

But once again, their defense braces, and puts us at 4th and goal. My specialty is defense, but since we've only got 7, I've been lining up in the slot all game, largely ignored. Our QB calls a rollout WR fly, with a slot drag. The ball's snapped, the blitz comes, but our QB dances away, barely. Having done nothing offensive all game, I'm left to drag and wind up just inside the goal line, with everyone a good 5 yards away on all sides. The pass comes - too high! But somehow, my stone hands and white-boy vert are enough to bring it down and IN for the touchdown! We convert on the 2-pointer, so we lead 14-13...but it's not done yet.

With 2 minutes left, they start marching down the field, aided by some MORE crap calls. The refs were still pissed off about the beginning of the game, it seems. With 1 minute left, we force them into 4th down at about our 35. I've been running blitzes and short zones all day, and this down, I come in after the QB. He drops, throws, I manage to get *just* a finger on it...just enough so that the pass is underthrown and our safety beats the receiver to the ball and picks it off to end the game!

A thrilling win, made even more sweet because we triumphed over bad sportsmanship and crap officiating.

Thanks for reading, I hope this was worth the 5 minutes it may have taken you to read.

Afterword: In case anyone's wondering, no this isn't tackle (can you imagine?) but flag football. Although with the blocks and rough stuff, it might as well be tackle. 7 men on a side, the field is divided into 4 zones, with 4 downs to gain a zone. As for penalties...let's just say, don't piss off the refs before the game, even if it's their own fault, because it'll come back to bite you in the ass.

Funny then, how in a turtle vs turtle game, you NEED scouts to win. Everyone knows that if you lose your scouts before your opponent in a turtle game, you're in much trouble. And I would also like to see a turtler who dares to play with only one scout here.

I like games where all pieces have their own significance and where the game isn't considered over if ONE piece is dead (like the beloved cleric for the turtlers). Funny thing is, the game will mature much more once people start to simply play and not asking for set games...I face so many forms out there that a turtle would rock, but because turtlers are now afraid to face anything except their own kind, they're destroying their own art.

And we call this superior skill?

But, if you lose your cleric, take something out for it, or even keep it if you can, rethreaten them as you would in a freestyle game. But I can say that most turtler cant rush, because they're not used to it, and most rushers cant turtle, doesn't so much require skill, but more of being used to.

Oh c'mon. In a turtle vs. turtle game, if one side actually managed to take out the opponents cleric and get away with it without losing his own, the person still owning the cleric would have to be a n00b to lose.

As for your generalization, I think you're being TOO general.

Been a cubbie all my life. I was glued to the TV during the Bartman era errrrrrrrrrrr error, and was living and dying on every pitch along with the rest of the Cub faithfuls. I think that was probably one of the biggest things in Chicago possibly rival to Jordan. However nothing made me more sick than all the bandwagon fans that tried to ride the "suffering" personna with the rest of cub nation. BAH! White Sox.... who cares, throw another series. Actually that was a great team, but really it is so crazy how Chicago is so baseball hungary but only over one team. I think it is an example of how it isn't about baseball at all but about the Cub mystique. *shrug*

Going to a Cub's game isn't a game, it's an event. It's a party. I can't wait till this summer when I officially join the bleacher bums in my first trip to Wrigley after 21 years of waiting.

As for why it's flag football - #1, no university on earth would want to be liable for injuries suffered during tackle football, #2, getting all that equipment together for IM sports would be costly, and #3, I'm a graduate student...dumbasses. Funny then, how in a turtle vs turtle game, you NEED scouts to win. Everyone knows that if you lose your scouts before your opponent in a turtle game, you're in much trouble. And I would also like to see a turtler who dares to play with only one scout here.

I hope this is not your response to our claim that turtles involve less luck, since it has nothing to do with luck AT ALL. You claim that there are several units more important than others in turtle games, which is true. But I don't really see what's so wrong with it though. Why does it matter that a scout is more important than a knight in a turtle game, since it goes for both players?

This is actually a good thing since it will ask for a strategy. For example you need to protect your own cleric / stoney / frostie / range, but while you're doing it you also need to find your way to kill these important units of your opponent. This ask for a strategy since both players (usually) start of in a defensive position.


I like games where all pieces have their own significance and where the game isn't considered over if ONE piece is dead (like the beloved cleric for the turtlers).

It's completely your choice to like whatever you want. You're allowed to use all units except for one in turtles (I'm using Monkus' rules right now) so nothing is stopping you.

Then there's your example. It's true that a cleric is very important in a turtle game, which means you must be a complete idiot if you let your cleric die without taking enough from him to still stand a chance.

Every turtler knows the importance of his units and he'll adapt his strategy to it. Which is why this (mostly) only happens when someone is being outplayed, which is what we have been claiming since forever. You lose a turtle game (mostly) because you got outplayed, not outblocked.


Funny thing is, the game will mature much more once people start to simply play and not asking for set games...

Uhm I guess? I don't really know how the game will mature but what I'm seeing right now is that if we don't ask for a set game we won't be able to play the way we want to play this game, because the game is so unbalanced.

I face so many forms out there that a turtle would rock, but because turtlers are now afraid to face anything except their own kind, they're destroying their own art.

This is just completely ridiculous. This really is just not true. People who "freestyle" mostly use 80% of their units on the frontline. Usually involving a GA and muddy right in front of you. Making your game almost impossible to win.

I have never been a big fan of turtles, mostly because I lack the patience and attention span for such a long and slow game. :p

I think that there is more evolution to happen in this game. Many more ways to play will emerge and should since the game is built to be so free flowing. I personally won't be turtling (pretty much ever), but it's cool that people can find ways to play the game that make it a better personal experience.

This is highly unlikely.... the rush came around after three months of TAO's existence (the bomb after only two). Meanwhile, nothing significantly new has come around in the year and three quarters that have passed since then. Only a new unit (might) be able to shake things up (keep in mind the past two new units really didn't help the free flowing situation)
