Sir I am most glad you cleared that up with the later post about food for a minute there sir I thought you were going to suggest that I look more into talking to guys. Fortunately for me I dont really look at guys that way. Although I guess there is nothing wrong with that if it is your preference but it is not mine sir.
About the cake what does that have to do anything with girls, I can cook my own food well grilled cheese and Spam and Mac & Cheese but I dont see where having one girl cook you something should be offensive to another girl cooking you something.
Edit: Nevermind I give up on trying to figure you crazy geezers out.;)

And nah, I'm not into guys either. Why have a hairy, blocky butt when you can have a soft, smooth one? That's only one part of my argument to being hetero.

It's called a crumpet, and it's quite hard to describe. It's nothing like a cookie, though- it's savoury for one thing. And it's not crunchy like a cracker.
Sorry Boots sir I was close thow I was only off by one vowel. HE HE Thrdflr would not have gotten it right either he doesn't use any vowels.

Meh, I hate luck -.-'
It always seems to appear for my enemy when it shouldn't and when I need it, it isn't there.
Therefore a lucky name can help towards the situation!
But I'm still unlucky...
so yeah...
fuck luck --'
Twelve
09-08-2004, 09:14 AM
You let luck have too much power over you because you actually give in to it.
I mean, I know you happen to believe in "lucky names"...if you happen to have a name and you play poorly, you think that name is cursed. Then you go into a game expecting to play poorly. Your attitude is down. And that just leads to you playing poorly, which you attribute to bad luck.
Don't "fuck luck", OWN IT!!!
Powers such as "bad luck" and "good luck" are myths.

Meh. If you stuck with Wolf, it would even itself out. And you'll start losing with Ripple eventually, and then what...will you make another name because Ripple is suddenly stained?
Heck, I went on a mega losing streak(for the sake of my reputation, I won't say HOW long) with Twelve, and you don't see me giving up that name.

Oppurtunity + Preperation = Luck
Bottle
09-08-2004, 12:19 PM
Luck can be harnessed and used tactically. But often, a battle can be lost because despite excellent positioning by you, you still don't get the pyro side hit just before it burns your cleric. That's luck which can't be owned, and happens regardless of preparation.
Catra
09-08-2004, 01:13 PM
Very well said Bottle, but there is another side of that... The opportunity was not there.
Twelve
09-08-2004, 01:18 PM

Luck often falls to those who put themselves in the position to receive it.

And now, FryLock just got his luck against me. Furgon hits in the rush-turtle game, with pyro blocks, and then about 20/25 front hits on my scouts in our turtle game. Unbelievable. How is that opportunity and preparation?
Well anyway, that puts Fry into #2 on banff. Props to him. Now, I'm going to get back my position. Unfortunately for rantzu, Fry's got me ANGRY. :)

C'mon dude. Give Fry some credit. First he beat you rush verses turtle, which is expected. Then he beat you right after turlte vs. turtle at your request. The man fought well so at least give a LITTLE bit up. I know you're not happy, but c'mon. :)

It is always bad luck for them and their loses. Never the skill of their opponent, so don't hold your breathe for any credit.

20/25 for scout frontals? I think that's a bit high. While I agree that it definitely helped turn the tide in the 2nd game, would it kill you to give me a little credit, Bottle? All the luck in the world doesn't mean anything if one can't do anything with it. Aside from luck, I made some good moves in our turtle game (not sac'ing my dragon, for example), and then setting up the fork to take your last scout.
Again, I admit, I did nail your scouts from the front a bit. But in our 2nd rev league game, I went from sure victory to sure defeat, as a knight and 2 scouts died from front hits, leaving me only a knight against your scout and stone. I still gave you credit for your win. It's just a game. It's just a ranking. I enjoyed our games today. As odd as it sounds, I enjoyed your company, too. :) We all know you're a good player. Would it hurt to dish out a little praise yourself, every now and then?
Bottle
09-09-2004, 05:03 AM
I gave you props, didn't I? ;)
Ok, so maybe it wasn't quite that bad. More like 15/25. But it was still enough to force me onto the defensive, which against a good player is suicide.
Anyway, I still think I'm better than you at turtling. And you're better than me at rushing. Care to prove me wrong? :)

I think that's a very accurate description of our abilities. In the turtle game we had, luck, and a lack of mistakes from me (I always seem to screw up turtle games somehow) managed to tip the balance. It was fun, they were both hard fought matches. And I'd say that even if I lost both of them badly.
Which I didn't. :D

You don't see me showing off my record on Twelve Wlf:D (cept my wins in a row...which was a little arrogant). *takes a bet that those 6 games vs. Twelve by Wlf were his only lucky games in history(even if skill was involved)*
Fry - how do you respect those shrubs? I'm telling you...my furgon is in cahouts (I think thats the word) with my cat, in a giant drug organization. I think the dragon is in on it too, Hes the kingpin; the pyros are his little assassin henchmen. The furgon is like the mad genius.

Wolf, please keep your story-book tendencies at bay. Now you're REALLY just making stuff up. I mean, come on.
The only people who have records against me that I'm ashamed of are Moose and Bludhoundz, pretty much. Wack-Head and Rescorlian used to be on that list, but I've rectified that.
With Moose and Blud, I just have bad luck in terms of formations. Whenever I choose rock, they got paper. I go scissor, they go rock. I go paper, they go scissor. Just how it is...

Can't visit Rev, Frylock :)
Plus everyone always underestimates my grey formations and skills and look what happened? I played a respectable game against Search66 and won soundly yes but it was done with much effort. One of the best golds I've played.
I've beaten Twelves unbeatable anti-grey and clocked him countless times with grey vs grey and gold vs gold.
I just rule XD
nah in all serious I used to have a great mental mind for this game.
I didn't look for 2 3 or 4 steps it was also 7, 8 or 9 turns a reach.
My predictions were about 90% exact and the other time I was close and covered all places.
Shame I've lost all that now but suppose it happens.
Enjoy yourselves and don't take things too seriously ^_^ They are better things you could be doing than discussing battling; always brings out the worst in one person or another.

Well, I can finally get to this...
Hello, my name's Smoke (Obviously) of the Great Lakes server. I'm taking over Lord Achilles' status as one of the leaders since he was banned due to his very idiotic behavior.
He said he considered your clan friendly to him, and that I should introduce myself to all of you. I hear you're great players, so I'll be looking foward to games with all of you. I've already met Doce (Somewhat), and he seems like a very nice man, I hope all of your clan with-holds that same character.
And somthing I'm sure you're wondering. Why I've been given a leader status so quickly. I'm actually not new here. I played in December, but then in February my wife passed away, so I stopped for quite some time. But I was one of the founders of BG, so he let me return as that.
Well, that is about all. You all seem like great players and people, and I'll be looking foward to meeting you!

Man!
You always hear about people waking up on the "wrong side of the bed" or waking up feeling horrible.
But do you often hear about people waking up and feeling GREAT!!!???
I just woke up, and I feel....absolutely...perfect. Shockingly so...I first had to check to make sure I was actually awake.
Since a certain kind of drama that began in my life on August 4th, and technically ended 3 weeks later, I've been living pretty much with my ceiling below true happiness. I guess I've gotten quite used to it.
But sheesh, I woke up this morning...and...WOW...I feel like I'm finally back to my old self! I've literally not felt this good since August.
I would like to thank God for providing for me spiritually during this time.
I would like to thank my cutie wife for providing for me physically during this time(Hugh? You talk about being lucky? Good God my boo is on a roll lately!).
Last but not least, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK MY HOMEBOYS AND HOMEGIRLS AT THE 'JAK FOR BEING THE BEST! Even during that dark time recently when I felt like a loser, you've all made me feel like a winner.
I ALWAYS give props where props are due and I need to give it up now!!! You guys ROCK!!!

I just said ":)" and proceded to dissect him.
He surrendered eventually. Called me a n00b afterwards. Go figure. But he really shouldn't have falled for that trick that allowed me to roast his cleric with my witch.

I reached 1200 on legends inside 5 hours as a grey, during which time I beat several 1500 golds (double and single) and flawlessed a 1400 single gold. I then left because I was bored by the lack of challenges.

Yup. And crater will admit that had the CRAZIEST luck. Even then, it came down to a knight-on-knight battle, with both needing one hit to die. I had a LW; I could have gone for the draw. I had a go at a side attack. He blocked. He won by 2 HP.
Even the default setup is hard to beat if used by a skillful player, especially if they get lucky.

When it comes to a knight on knight battle in the end, you can have health between 1 and 17. It doesn't matter. One hit will end it.

LOL. 12 gets PWNED. :D
That doesn't happen to me much any more though... my games always seem to end with the enemy knights 1 or 2 spaces away from my chanty, for some reason. Before the chanty days, when the best greys used 2 or 3 witches and 2 clerics, it happened regularly.

Oh, please don't give Wack a bigger head then he already has. He's already totally confused as to his worth. It'll be a sad day when the truth comes crashing down around him.
Irritatingly enough, my close games usually end up involving my slow as heck dragon...I'm often lucky that most players don't know (or have forgotten) how easy it is to force a draw when I'm down to a dragon.

Bottle
09-26-2004, 01:42 PM
If you allow yourself to only be left with a dragon, you don't deserve the win. Taking out everything but the dragon in a bad situation to force the draw is a very good tactic to use. Just 'cos it happens to you, doesn't mean it's unfair. Just learn to deal with it.

09-27-2004, 12:24 AM
Ok, ok...I admit it...I do.
I didn't want to come to this point, because I've always tried to look at this game in a positive light...
I've spoken against those who say this game sucks because of luck, by saying such nice sounding phrases like, "Luck fall to those who put themselves in the position to receive it".
But I've had enough...this game is seriously flawed. I've long secretly held this belief, but now I know it's a FACT: between two equally skilled players, you might as well flip a coin to decide who will win because it all comes down to luck.
I don't care what formation you use, what units, nothing...
Some say that a way to avoid luck is to use spellcasting units. Even this logic, if true, reveals a major flaw in the game's setup. However, even spellcasting units fall to the rules of luck when it comes to deciding if you're DSM blocks that lucky scout shot when he only has 8 health or not.
Formations have much to do with the game's outcome, sure(even that has much to do with luck...who knows if your formation will be appropriate with what you face?), but even a well-crafted formation will fall apart when the opponent has key blocks.
I know I'm only preaching to the choir...many know this and have accepted it. However, I figured that if I played long enough I would somehow see a deeper, more mature side to this game that would reveal a place where one can overcome luck.
However, as I've been playing since January, I see that these original ideas are just being confirmed over and over.
The clincher for me happened just now: I was *clowning* a well respected, older player in Legends(he had 2 scouts). I mean, MAJOR clownage.
I had the superior formation, I was outplaying him every step of the game. I was outplaying him so badly that I was even overcoming the HORRENDOUS luck that I was having througout. His scouts were blocking like magic, while my boys absolutely refused to block. Still, I was owning him and feeling quite good about my ability to overcome luck with skill.
At one point in the game, all he had left was a knight, those 2 ridiculously lucky scouts, a stonie, and a frostie. Somehow, I managed to knock one of his scouts down to 5 health. One shot from ANYTHING would kill it.
I had a cleric, scout, 2 knights, and a pyro. Considering what I had been through this game, I not only deserved the win, but I had earned it and the game was mine.
Well, that lucky scout with 5 health, who ALWAYS blocked from the side when he needed to, farted his way into position to finish off my damaged cleric.
Still, I had the advantage. Then, one of my two FULL health knights simply stopped blocking, and with a mixture of old frostie techniques and his remaining lucky scout, he died.
Things would have been easier for me if my scout chose to block ONCE. Nope...he died with 2 attacks of the enemy knight.
As if to laugh at my luck, my pyro managed to block an attack after he had already been knocked to 8 health, but since his wait is 3 turns, it didn't matter as my opponent simply got behind him and killed him.
It took a long time to kill my enemy's remaining scout...it would have taken 2 hits but of course this scout chose to sideblock.
I found myself, somehow, with one knight remaining against the enemy knight, stonie, and frostie.
Since my opponent was higher than my 1520 rating, I figured, disgustedly, that I can try for a draw. Heck, all I needed to do was hit the enemy knight a couple of times.
The enemy knight blocked both attacks from the side, giving my oppoent time to slug his frostie into position.
By this time, I knew that I was lost...but I would be a good sport and allow my opponent the satisfaction of pwning me.
I had myself in a spot where if I moved anywhere, the frostie would have frozen me. So, I knew I lost.
To add a cherry on this game's retard-sundae(thanx 66), my opponent said "what the hell" and attacked my knight from the front.
It got through. We both laughed...I don't know why my opponent was laughing but my laughter was certainly not out of joy.
Then he went around and attacked my knight from the side. My knight didn't block of course, and I lost without him even losing his frostie.
"GG", my opponent said.
I replied, "I would say 'GG', but this game had nothing to do with skill. Take care."
Now, some idealists may come along after this post and suggest what I COULD have done...well, I'm not a n00b. Trust me, I played with skill in this game and I tried all options.
Stuff like this has happened to me before, disgusting me...but I've had about enough. I've been a gamer since '84 and I take pride at being good in game requiring skill and strategy. But when somethink like this happens, it seems to be a slap in the face at my intelligence. Why waste the brain energy on something that won't reward you for it? I think I'll go back to chess for my online kicks. Chess is....perfect.
Oh well. This isn't meant to be a discouragement for those who love this game. And I'm not done yet. It's just that I may be entering a phase where I won't be able to take this game seriously anymore. What is rating? Seriously, I now know for a FACT that high rating only goes to those who play a lot...and that's all, folks!!
Because of luck, I've beaten the very best in this game(heck, Rantzu has never beaten me...I would love to say that this is due to skill but it's like flipping a coin that turned out to be heads 3 times straight for me, that's all). I've lost to clowns in this game because of it as well.
Oh well.
I just want to say "sorry" for those who I dissed in the past when they said the same thing I say here. How cocky I was!!!

First: you can look at this games 2 ways
Or you think this game is about killing your opponents units
Or you thinki this game is about preventing your opponent to kill your units..
you guys obviously go for the second.. i go for the first.. that's why we disagree...
and second:
You're absolutely right twelve

I'm tempted to quote parts of 12's last post, but it would just make this one too long as well. All I'm going to say is this. You're absolutely right about two equally skilled players playing, that it'll be the toss of a coin. I don't know about rush-rush matches, but I can attest that in a top game between two excellent turtlers, even the person who gets first turn has a massive advantage, because they are the ones who get their dragon to attack an enemy scout first, forcing that scout back... and you can't win a defensive turtle match if your opponent has a muddie. And then there's the matter of front and side blocks on scouts, which often decide battles too.
All I can say in consolation is that it was one game. If you care about rating, then yes, it's a big blow to lose a game you should have won. If you don't care about rating, then you can look back on the match and say "Yeah, I pwned that guy. He knows who the better player was, and so do I. The fact that *You Lose* came up at the end meant nothing at all," then you won't mind the bad luck at all. I know this, because I've had some humdingers with Big X, Darque and Draquist that came down to luck, and because they were in my clan and so rating was irrelevant, we both knew that in many cases, the better player didn't win, and both admitted so. Because we didn't take the game seriously, it was far more enjoyable, even when we lost.
I find that too many people say gg after a match, regardless of how good the match was. Yes, it's common politeness, but if your opponent is fuming over a series of lucky pyro blocks, then I'd say it would be more polite to apologise for your good luck, and offer a rematch.
Finally, I'd just like to say how nice it is to see 12 lose his cool for once. Proves he's human after all.

The wonderful thing is when people accuse of of winning by luck when they outblocked you the whole game
Anyway, how can it be that so many people noticed the luck involved in the game, but overlooked the NLL (http://www.tacticsarena.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8476&highlight=luck)? Hell, I would have loved if more people were interested in it. I was disappointed when it simply died from lack of interest.

Well, 12, you've always been FAR too cool about EVERYTHING to be human. I'd concluded you were a Vulcan.
Just read your update on the review, 12, and I'd say that you SHOULD have said that MOST games will be decided by luck not skill. Sometimes, a slight imbalance in luck can be counteracted by good play. It makes it sound as though luck rules the game; it doesn't in grey games AT ALL, as you woud know if you played it, and many gold games are only slightly affected. Anyone reading that review will now think that it's not a good game because everything is decided by luck. It's not. Still, it's your opinion, and your review, so you can say what you want about it. I wouldn't have put it like that, though. If I read that review a month ago having never played TAO, I'd have jumped at it. Now, if I read it and hadn't played it before, I'd think that it wasn't worth playing. And it is.

Dang...didn't want to give that impression about me being unemotional! Oh man!
As for the review update, it's supposed to be read in its entirety. Note that I delete nothing from the original review...all of that still matters.
But the fact is, the weaknesses of this game have to be noted. There is a ceiling to skill in this game...beyond this ceiling is only luck.
In a way, I enjoy the game MORE now because now if I lose, I don't really mind as much because the luck involved is out of my hands and it is no slight on my own intelligence. In a a way I have more fun.
But I also know that it hasn't truly touched the deepest parts of my strategical mind...you know what I mean?
I mean, if you and I played Advance Wars, Bottle, you KNOW that the better strategist between us would win!! Luck? No way, dude!
And can you honestly say that luck plays no roll in grey games at ALL?? At ALL? Sorry, I'll have to disagree. The "skill-ceiling" may be higher in the grey game(as you might think...you know I disagree), but it's there.
Fact is, Bottle, you don't appreciate the gold game as I do and I don't appreciate the grey game as you do and therefore we'll never get much ground there.
Your criticism is duly noted and I added something at the end of the review with you in mind...but I added it because I too thought I may have come off too harshly.

Well 12, if you and I played Advance wars, I'd be complaining when a 58% only reduces a unit to 5. :)
Sure, luck plays a role in grey games. But it doesn't mean that the lucky player then always wins. As I said, good luck doesn't matter AS MUCH, because you don't have the firepower to exploit it quickly. The unlucky person can just retreat and heal up most of the time... and even when a lucky shot kills a unit, putting one person a unit up, a good player can overturn the deficit, even against the very best players, with some good play. Drawing an analogy with advance wars, would a battle be more strategic with all tanks, A-Airs and B copters, or with neotanks, bombers and missiles? One shot killing a unit is always going to make for a less strategic game.
I do appreciate the gold game, not as much as you maybe but still a lot. I don't feel you appreciate the grey game nearly as much. Still, that's your prerogative.

As far as I'm concerned, this just delays the fact that luck will play a role in the game eventually. You know how it is...if you manage to nail a scout from the front in an intense gold game, you've got a major advantage. Suppose your scout must retreat and moves into range so that ONLY a front scout shot will kill it. Then the enemy scout moves and and does just that.
But whatever...I still love this game.
