i was watching the larry elder show before work, and i was acutally a little frightened. for those of you who dont know about the show, think dr. phil, but with a black host who worked his way out of the ghetto and the projects to be where he is today.
well, today's show had several black guests who were upset about mr. elder's viewpoints about race. once again, for those of you who dont know, mr elder's view on race is basically a king jr. approach. judge not on the color of skin, but merits of charachter and the such. well, these black guests were saying things that you thought you would have heard in the sixtys about the 'white man' holding them down. now, i didnt know that this 'reverse racism' was a prominent as it apparently is. i was always raised with the mindset that i can achieve anything i want to so long as i strive for it and do everything in my power to get there. are there any black tao forum-ers that feel that they cannot achieve their goals due to the 'white man'? if you do, please feel free to send me a p/m explaining your thoughts and ideas and reasoning behind it if you dont want to just post it here. i really want to understand why you feel this way.

I am white. I live in a very predominant "black" city. When I waited tables it was not uncommon for me to be considered racist for bringing the guests their check. Basically the city is so predominantly "black" that we've hired a "black" mayor that has abused the system like a step child to fatten his and all his friend's pockets. Let that have been a "white" dude and I would hate to see how the city would react. I mean, it's even talked about openly how bad for the city he is, but my point is that since he is "black" the color isn't an issue, but anything having to do with "whites" well it is an issue.
My point is, I am smack dab in the middle of a reverse racism climate. I'm cool with everyone so it never really hits me hard outside of previous job settings. But I think there is a class or at least a memo given at birth that if something doesn't go your way here the proper response is "this is bullshit, this is racism".
*yawn*
EDIT: And if there are any C.O.G.I.C. members out there, I apologize b/c I know this post really pissed you off. But when your own race won't wait on you or even talk to you b/c of the way you act.... well, that should say something. Of course that is a generalization, so you "may" very well be the exception to the rule, but trust me... here in Memphis for your yearly COGIC convention, it is most def the rule.

Rood,
Not tipping the waiter/ bartender/pizza delivery man is offensive and wrong.
Did your manager ever consider including gratuity in the bill?

Well, we were corporate at the place that I am speaking of specifically. We were right downtown on the river which got us all the tourists, all the Beale St Partiers, and all the conventions (including COGIC). We were only allowed to include grat with parties of 8 or more. But the thing is this...
It wasn't about the tip. It was the fact that I would bring them food, they would eat half of it, then say "I didn't order this" or they would eat all of it and say "this wasn't any good". From there we knew what they were doing but would offer them the meal free anyway at which point that would argue that the entire bill should be free. By this point I have stepped out and let my manager handle it. But up until that point, they have run me like a dog. Can't noone get drinks at the same time. I go up and ask and one person wants something, then I come back with it and the next wants something, so on and so on. Like I said, I've had difficult customers and that is no problem. It's the attitude. COGIC especially. If you tried to call them on their lie they would say "I AM A SAINT, YOU CAN'T TOUCH ME", all the while cussing you out like a sailor. Or they toss the ever popular race card. My buddy had his picture taken along with the manager by a huge table that was trying to scam us, they were threatening to put the pics in the paper with a long article about how we were racist and were going to try and destroy this national chain's restuarant.

That's just awful. It seems everything today can be related back to racism. You accidentally do something that might offend someone and they'll be playing the race card in an instant. It's a pity.

Well, I am not what you would call "well traveled" but I have seen many places. And it doesn't seem to be the same everywhere. I just happen to be in the city where MLK Jr got shot. We also have the National Civil Rights Museum.

No it's not. It's not offensive or wrong. It's not my fault society wants me to pay someone extra to do their job. ~max
Guess you never waited tables, tended bar or delivered pizza. There is a word for people like you = cheapskate.

While there are some that will scream "racism" at anything, you have to remember that most of the time its not crying wolf. There really is still a big racism problem. I mean, when the KKK still holds a sizable membership and other hate groups are out there trying to act like civilized americans (Young Conservatives of Texas) things are still bad.
Racism might not be as blatant as it was, but it hasnt gone away either.

Or when the goverment/institutions implements quotas that mandate a certain number from X group of people need to be hired / admitted . . . that is also racism or discrimination (depending on what defines those in and out of group X).
Every person who is not from the X group who was passed over for the sole reason of not being in group X (i.e., all else was equal, so the detiminate was based on inclusion or exclusion from group X), has then been discriminated against.
The only difference from the KKK (or whatever group) is that it is Government mandated and/or approved.

Care to explain why there are black only scholarships, black miss america pagents, black rights groups? The only racism problem that is left is ignorance and hate against your fellow man. The instances of true racism "holding someone down" are next to nothing these days. Mexicans could maybe cry about racism but not until they bother becoming citizens and learning the language. Those that have I don't think could ever compare what they go through to old school racism. It is no different than what I would get in Mexico if I went.
I know this thread is gonna lead people to believe I am a bigot. Honestly I am not. I just get sick and tired of people leaning on racism as a crutch. Hell, I was born to a mother who left my father without her college degree. She has worked her ass just to provide what I needed. I am not trailor bound, but I don't have the money I would like to have either. I can sit here all f'n day and cry about how the rich oppress me. Give me a friggin break. GROW UP PEOPLE AND TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR OWN LIFE. Unless you are still a slave, wake up to burning crosses, or still getting sprayed with a water hose, then I really am not buying it. Hasn't anyone ever offered me their seat on the bus, hasn't anyone ever shown me the whites only counter. I've been passed over for jobs simply b/c my skin color was white and apparently they didn't have enough other colors on payroll while I had more experience. Whatever, just don't tell me it doesn't go both ways anymore.
