When is it right to neg rep?

I recently neg repped a member of our forums because I disagreed with what he was saying. He negged me back with a message: You negged me for no reason. My post was on point and it was not offensive. Our opinions differ, that is all. Did I really neg rep this user for no reason? Let's explore this . . .

When do you pos rep someone?
You pos rep someone in several situations. For example, when you agree with someone's post, when it brings you laughter, when you feel that they are doing the right thing, or when you're just going on a rep spree. So positive rep is good.

Now . . .

When do you neg rep someone?
Negative is the opposite of positive. Therefore, neg repping someone should be for reasons that are the opposites of positively repping someone. For example, when you don't agree with someone's post, when you find the humor to be offensive, when you feel that they are doing the wrong thing, or--once again--when you're just going on a rep spree. Negative rep, is obviously bad.

If you use this reasoning, I neg repped him for a valid reason.

Now, spreading reputation around is a right every member of this community has. If someone feels they can neg or pos rep someone, they should do it. This is how I felt when I neg repped the user I quoted previously. His neg rep response stated that he did not deserve to be neg repped and that his posts were on point and not offensive. So this user is implying that if a user posts messages that are off point and are offensive, they deserve to be neg repped. However, the exact opposite of that: if a user posts message that are on point and are not offensive . . . what then? Should they be pos repped? If so, every member of this community would certaintly have more rep points than they do now.

I'm guessing that every member of this community who has repped others has given much more positive rep than negative rep. Why is that? Is it because they ignore the bad posts? Possibly . . . Maybe it's because they don't feel the 5 seconds it would take to negatively rep a user is worth their time. But if someone feels strongly about something and believes it's worth their time to neg rep the user for whatever reason, why shouldn't they?

Most newer users with fewer posts and reputation points are afraid of neg repping someone because they fear the consequences of it. They fear the neg rep that may come in return. Obviously, this isn't right, but what can be done?

When should neg rep be given? I think there should never be a set code for rep. Rep whoever you want, whenever you want, for whatever reason you want . . .

Your logic is logical, but that doesn't really make it good. You forget that people quite often pos as a response to a pos that they got. So the one who negged you also did nothing wrong.

lowest rep to post so far: i think that if you want to neg someone then go ahead. they had to do something that made you want to neg them so why dont you? i mean dont neg people for no good reason but still if the thought of negging then comes up then there is some controversy. i have negged people with much much higher reps then me and i have yet to get a revenge rep.
as far as pos sprees go i think its not right. all it is is just boosting you little circle of "friends" and then they boost you back. wow, how kool is that, now both of your reputations are bs. same goes with neg repping everyone you dont like just because you dont like them.

I've only ever givin out about 5 rep's, and they were all positive. But I only give out pos rep's when I strongly beleive the post diserved it. Basicly, I will give a good rep to a post that has increased how Highly I see a person, and I will give a neg rep only when a post has decreased how highly I see a person. So if I dont know the person, I cant realy drop their rep with a neg rep, because it cant get lower than Unknown.. This is why most of mine are positive, and this is also how I feel about how rep's should be done.

I only neg rep when the person is a complete idiot. Points I think are stupid or disagree with I usually flame, however when that person is in your clan and you are trying to take it easy on them, a neg rep seems the only way to politely say that was pretty lame dude.

When I neg someone, its always for a good reason - excluding Thash, I tell them to feel free to neg me back if they think its appropriate. I rahter discuss stuff via pms anyway.

I actually laughed at me when I negged Thash saying. "Just Spreading around some reputation."

And meat, you could try to discuss stuff via PMs more than posting in a thread. Someone could find being called a prick in public a bit offensive. :)

I can safely say that the neg rep is just another tool to make yourself either:

a) Feel better about yourself and make it seem like others are worse then you

b) Just asking to be neg repped back when you give out negative feedback.

c) A way of taking things out of context and entitling yourself to be mean

d) No purpose at all, it's just their to push when you get bored.

I like the rep system. I like alot of the members on the forums. I enjoy getting pos. rep.

The last time I got a neg rep It was from an unknown person (Who I think I know but won't name) because in the thread where you describe someone by their name, I said that they like to cheat. Well I know you can guess who, but I did not mean it to offend the person, and because we are on the internet someones intention is not always clear so it makes it hard to understand what someone means some times because everyone is biased.

I don't neg rep very often at all. For someone to get a neg from me, they really have to make an ass out of themselves. I've had many discussions, some relatively heated, yet I've never negged someone simply for having a different opinion than me.

If you're going to neg rep just because someone has a different opinion than you, just about every single post on these boards would get negged by someone because I'll guarantee there's someone who will disagree with almost every single position you can take on a topic. I don't think it's fair to neg rep for differing opinions as long as they are said tastefully and intelligently.

Sometimes they do. I find that people seem to pos rep you JUST because you have a very high reputation. When I had 1 or 2 boxes, I got a rep (could be a neg or a pos) every five days or so. Now I seem to attract a pos rep (and usually more) every day. Maybe people finally notice you when you have these shiny green boxes?
