It's that time of the month--aside from the regular deletion of cheaters and spammers, we are greeted with the warm-hearted massacre of our helpless grey accounts.
Most of you know have been here long enough to know what a server wipe is, but the few of you that are just joining us here at TAO might be saying, "OH NOES! I DONE GONE BEEN HACKERED!!!1 WHAT DO I DO?"
So here's a guide to the loss of control of your account, grey wipe and otherwise.
Firstly:
If you are a grey, and you have recently lost control of your account, first check the Home Page (www.tacticsarena.com) and look for a message that looks vaguely like this:
Gray Account Wipes!
A reminder to all Gray (free) account holders that a server wipe will be done within the next 72 hours. We hope you enjoyed playing on your TAO account and will consider upgrading your account to Gold status.
What's a server wipe? - Every month we receive between 200 and 300k in free account sign ups. We clear out all free accounts to make room for new ones each month. After the wipe all free account holders will have to recreate their accounts if they wish to continue playing. All stats and unit drops gaining from the month before are reset.
If you are an active TAO player and want to retain your units and stats please consider upgrading your account. Gold Accounts are not effected by server wipes and will remain unchanged.
Check the date at the top of the announcement--if it is close to the date in which you lost your account, the odds are your account has been wiped. If this is the case, there is no way to save your account. Create a new account, seek out your clan member, and start anew.
WHY WOULD TAO DELETE MY GREY???//
Grey account wipes are done to clean the server of excess account storage, thus reducing server ping and consequently lag time; additionally, grey account wipes are done to encourage free account members to upgrade to a paid account (Gold), which includes such features as new units, lobby chat features, and grey wipe protection.
I CANNOT MAKE MY ACCOUNT AGAIN!!!
If you cannot recreate the account with the original name, create a new, original account name and /stat the name. The odds are, someone else has stolen the name, which means you will have to create a new account.
Secondly:
If you are gold and your account simply isn't working, there may be one of two problems. First, your account may have been deleted by one of the admins for violation of the administrator's rules; second, your account may have legitimately been hacked/password changed.
The first thing you need to do is to check the Blacklist of Cheaters and Spammers (http://www.tacticsarena.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15956) and make sure your name is not on that list. If it is, and you know why, go to Internet Options in the Tools section and add 'www.tacticsarena.com' to your blocked list.
If you don't know why your account is on the blacklist, it is possible that your password was already given out and used to put your account on the blacklist. If this is the case, you will have to make a new account and gold it again. MAKE THE PASSWORD ON YOUR NEW ACCOUNT COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Additionally, NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR PASSWORD OR SUBSCRIPTION KEY TO ANYONE!!! The only way someone can access your account is if they guess your password or if you give it out. If you make your password difficult and keep it safe, neither of these will happen!
If your account is not on that list, but you still get the "Invalid name or password" response, double-check your username and password. Remember, your username requires proper spacing and YoUr PaSsWoRd Is CaSe SeNsItIvE, so you will need proper spacing and capitalization when you type out your account information.
If this still doesn't work, and your account's password has been changed, use the subscription code to change your pass and, if necessary, cancel your TAO subscription. To my knowledge, your subscription key CANNOT be replaced. If this is the case, the only way to have it changed is to renew your gold account on a different subscription to get a new subscription key. I will repeat at this time, NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR SUBSCRIPTION KEY. Your password CAN be changed, but YOUR SUBSCRIPTION KEY CANNOT. IF YOU LOSE IT, YOU LOSE CONTROL OF YOUR ACCOUNT.
