EDIT: Poll was great, got lots of goodies and info, here are the results...
I know, a bit of a necro, but as I'm sending off the info I figured I'd share some of the results that I got..
In total, I sum up all of our gaming preferences as: "Baaahhhh...I'm a sheep...tell me what to like this month."
Game's that were not so evident 1 year ago today..
FPS (seriously, about twice as many votes now as then)
MMO's (EQ2 and WoW weren't quite in Beta's yet, so the hype was just starting to build)
Game's that were more in evidence as preferred and aren't now:
Sports (cheaper sports games then, and lets face it, how many times can you get hyped up over the same sport?)
Horror (The Suffering, amongst others, made this genre kick ars a year ago)
Yep, the preferences have changed according to what's been popular. I mean, this isn't entirely bad, as it means that people are more open about the type of games they'll play than they used to be.
But while there are is still a solid core of people who know what they like best, some people just choose new types like Burn or Glam trying to decide the best ice cream flavor. Just when they think they got it, something cool comes into view and they head to that.

Myself, I'm torn between RPG/ FPS/fighting, they're all fun. SC2 and DOA games still suck up a lot of my time when I've got people around who like to play. RPG's are always great, and i've been addicted to those since the NES days. Also, can't forget about good ol' CS; 4 years of playing it and still luv it.
Still, I picked RPG's as thats been my longest lasting one.

Yeah. Cars make a good magnet for bird diarrhea.
I like FPS games for two reasons. I love Halo, and I love our servers.

FPS all the way :D Nothing beats a good shoot-em-up game (except a good ole fashioned hack and slasher :))

I picked RPG, I like games when you have choices, and you can do whatever you want with the chars.
First person shooters are nice, I just like games that take skill, rather than the ones based on the time you put in.

I put MMO, MMOFPS is best, but not on there. I need for counterstrike to be MMO.

Well, what a surprise. On an MMO strategy game website, the highest votes are for... MMOs, strategy and RPG games! Wow. Unexpected. :)

Eh, its not too surprising if RPG is high on the list anywhere, since like half the top sellers for the last few years are RPG or cross genre with RPG elements.
I don't think TAO could be called an MMO, as you can't actually interact with multiple ppl in the arenas.
Go back to the days of Duke3d if you want a more MMO styled FPS T3k. I remember playing 32 person ffa's on some maps for that game.

3rd person isn't a genre, it's a perspective.
I'd probably vote for Fighters since SSBM is a beast, but you forgot to add them to the poll.

read the first post, mainly the edit at the bottom. I didn't forget ;)

I actually just did and was about to edit that part out, but you beat me to the punch. Still though, fighters are one of the most popular and unmistakable genres. Should replace some of the less dominant ones like driving (could be considered a sport) or MMO's, they become more of a career than a game
I know, I know, there's a lot of stupid game threads. I'm sorry. This is for research purposes only, and I'm not trying to get a discussion going, you can just vote or flame as you feel the need ;)
Favorite game genre. Each of us at the mag I work at were asked to poll our internet haunts and find what people pref. We do this about once every 6 months and compare it to game releases and best sellers for the last 6 months.
So far...we're all a bunch of sheep that blindly follow the whims of EA and other gaming giants. Prove me wrong!!
If you want to make a comment why you like your's go for it. I likely won't need any statements though.
Indication of a favorite doesn't mean that's the only type you play. Think of it this way...when you walk into a game store when your not looking for something specific, what type of game's do your eyes immediately draw too?
Also, I'm aware that many games are cross genre's these days. However, we'll call them by their base genre's. WoW for instance, is an MMORPG, but it'd go as a MMO on the voting for simplicity's sake.
edit: Wow, someone already PM'd me that I missed their fav. Yes, I know fighting games aren't on the list, I had a limit of 10 options, so rather than limit it to just fighting, I made it a misc one. Just click it and say fighting or whatever it is for you in a post and I'll add it in on my notes.
uummmmmm, WoW if was single play would work fine as a basic RPG, (exept for some things) so I voted RPG

WoW is more a straight MMO than RPG, because its RPG elements are pushed down somewhat. Too much emphasis on PvP, not enough areas to provide a good variety (likewise, not enough to do in said areas), and too many things that are just handed to players (like how all trainers teach you all the spells, except the 2 or so that each class has to get from quests).
I luv the game, but it needs to get back into it's genre some.
