Mithrandir's Pro-Sports Style Tournament signups

I knew I shouldn’t have come back for Twelve’s tournament, I’ve gotten sucked back in a bit. I discussed this idea with Realist several months ago, and then I retired and it got put on hold. I’m going to go ahead and go for it before resuming retirement.

There are many tactical aspects of pro-sports that I love and I’ve put together a tournament that I think would be a lot of fun for all the participants and an excellent challenge for four people, who will act as leaders of four teams (if you’re bored of the usual games over and over, this is a tactical challenge you would love). As an added bonus, I expect it would also be more interesting for all the non-participants to observe than any tourney I have yet seen.

Here’s how it would work, in a nutshell: There will be four teams (each with a leader) made up of everyone that wants to be a part of this. The teams will be decided in schoolyard pick ‘em fashion, with the leaders alternating turns choosing players. Then before the game play begins, those leaders will have the opportunity to make trades (like in pro-sports) to make an all-around better team. This is necessary because the competition will require skill in different kinds of games. Once the trading is over, there will be two match-ups, with the first and second team playing each other and the third and fourth team playing each other. The two teams that are beaten in the first round will be eliminated. Then the finalists will play. I wish I could give out a prize but all I have to offer is a good time.

Before getting into more specifics, this is a tournament that would require teams of a decent size for the concepts to work well. If you’re interested, please sign up with the knowledge that you are putting your name down for a tournament that will only run if there is adequate interest. If you’re one of ten people to sign up, don’t worry you won’t be wasting your time because the tourney would, unfortunately, have to close. However, if you put your name down as a participant, the only two possibilities will be that the tourney runs with many people which will make it extremely interesting, or it won’t run and you’ll have lost nothing. There is no possibility of signing up here and ending up in part of a lame tourney with only a few people.

One other note, if you don’t want to be a leader, you don’t have to have a perfect understanding of the rules because you’ll be informed of what you need to do, because it is a bit complicated (as is inevitable in a tournament of this concept), though I hope I’ve explained it adequately (naturally I’ll answer any questions).

1: Signups for participants

Now for the more detailed version. It will begin with signups, which are open to everyone with access to the revelation server. There really isn’t a limit to how many people can join. If you want to sign up, post here and try and convince anyone reading of how valuable you’d be. This is not just a place for useless arrogance. This is important because we will end up with four teams and we will be selecting four team leaders and they will be doing “schoolyard pick ‘em” with all the participants. Which basically means we randomly select an order and they take turns picking players for their teams. There’s a twist here though which I think will make things more even. Heck, I don’t want whoever gets to pick first to automatically have a huge edge. So when the four leaders pick, it will start with L1, and then L2, then L3, then L4, and then the second round will go backwards, starting with L4 through L1 and then for the third round it would start with L1 again. If there isn’t a number of participants divisible by four, the leaders that select last will get extra players (which isn’t especially significant considering they’d be picked last). Which leader gets to pick first, etc. will be decided randomly. IMPORTANT: So again, if you’re signing up, don’t bore us to death with a long story but talk briefly about yourself and establish five things: 1, how good you consider yourself at freestyle games (you could potentially give a list of good players you’ve beaten), 2, how good you consider yourself at turtle games, 3, how good you consider yourself at grey games (without drops), 4, what the name of the rev account is that you’ll be using, and 5 (and most importantly), how often you’re on and how much a leader could count on you. If you flake and miss a match it could seriously cost your whole team.

2: Signups for leaders

If you want to be a team leader, post here saying so but keep in mind that it will be a time commitment. The leaders will need to be highly skilled at the game in addition to being respected members of the community. I will be personally selecting the leaders, as I can’t think of an entirely objective way of doing it. But my decisions will be based entirely on what the community requests. If you end up with an irritating or incompetent leader, your chances of winning are pretty much shot and your fun will be dramatically decreased as well. So give your opinions. Everyone, including mods, is eligible to be a leader.

As stated earlier, there are no tangible prizes but the bragging rights for the winning team will be sweet and the bragging rights for the leader of the winning team will be huge.

3: Team selection

After the leaders are selected, they will draw randomly to find out their order. Then, as explained above, they will select their teams. Once they have their teams, or before if he wants, the leader chooses a team name. The rules of war that will be used for this tournament are different than previous rules of war because without clans, they must be dealt with differently. Leaders will need to consider that according to the tournament rules, they will need players that are adept at turtle games, freestyle games and grey games. If, for example, a leader focused exclusively on getting good freestyle players and didn’t worry about the other categories, he would likely lose a lot of players simply because they’d have to play a type of game they wouldn’t be comfortable with every other round. And naturally, leaders will need players they can count on because anyone that doesn’t show up for a match within a certain amount of time will be disqualified.

4: Trading players

Here’s where we could have some fun, with huge pressure on the leaders here. Players have absolutely no say in the matter, leaders just make deals with other leaders. One player for one player deals are recommended but if the leaders agree on a trade that consists of multiple players for just one other, they can do so. It just means that when the battles start, one team will be short-handed and therefore will have to beat more players. This is the only stage where trading is allowed. After the battles begin, no trading at all.

If a leader could get a good deal, it could be extremely advantageous to have an extra couple of players so if one of your best players can’t make the first round but could make the second round, he could just sit out the first round instead of being disqualified. More on this later.

5: Semi-finals

After the leaders have their teams finalized, teams will randomly be placed against each other. Whichever team loses is out, the winner will go on to face the other finalist. Rules of war are below.

6: Finals

The finalists play, whichever team wins is the victor.

Mithrandir’s Rules of War

These rules would not be very applicable to clan wars, they are designed specifically for this tournament. But if two clans wanted to borrow stuff from here, I wouldn’t object.

1: Leaders set up rosters, one third for turtle games, one third for freestyle games, one third for no drop grey games

First, if one team has fewer players than another due to disqualification, inactivity or trading, the team with more players will simply match the other team’s number (meaning a team that has more players in a given round will have players sitting out, which again, is a significant advantage if some of your best players can’t make it to the first round).

In the first round, one third of the games will be turtle, one third will be freestyle and one third will be grey games without drops. Leaders will decide which players will play what kind of games. If there is an extra player on each roster, there will be an extra turtle game. If there are two extras, there will be an extra turtle game and an extra freestyle game. Grey drops will be allowed in gold games, gold prizes will not. No drops will be allowed in grey games. Failure to heed these rules will result in disqualification.

Screenshots are recommended but not required to post a win. However, if you have no proof and your opponent disputes your win, you will have a problem on your hands.

In addition to deciding who is playing what kind of game, the leaders must place their players in order from best to worst by ranking them in each category. These “rosters” must be decided after trading ends and before the first round begins. Where the players are seeded in each category cannot be changed after the first round begins. The only thing the leaders need to figure out is which players will play what kind of games in each round. Those decisions can vary from round to round.

2: First round of fighting

Both rosters are revealed and the first round of matches are decided, the “1” players playing each other, the “2” players playing each other, etc. Players will have a certain amount of time to complete their matches, if someone is a no-show for too great a period of time they will be disqualified. Anyone that loses a match, obviously, is out.

3: Leaders set up rosters for the second round

The second round works differently. Leaders will have no opportunity to influence who plays who this time because there will only be one kind of game: freestyle. So the rosters that judge players’ freestyle abilities will be the only ones used. Opposing players (the number 1 players from each team play each other, the number 2 players will play each other, etc.) will play a freestyle game unless a different type of game is agreed upon by both players.

After all that, there will almost surely be more players on one team than another. Again, the team with more players will simply have some players sit out that round so their number matches the other team’s. So if team one has 15 players and team two has 12 players, team one will have three players sit out that round. The leaders decide who will sit out.

Teams will play however many rounds are necessary until all of one team’s players are eliminated. Every odd numbered round (the first round, third round, fifth round, etc.) will work like round one, every even numbered round (the second round, fourth round, sixth round, etc.) will work like round two until one team is down to either one or two players, in which case it will work like the second round from there on out.

There is NO leader (in the traditional sense, of needing to kill one person to win the war) and there are NO guards. It’s just a matter of killing all of the opposing players. Due to the rosters, players do not get to challenge each other the way they do in clan wars.

The reason the system is like it is is that there would be very little strategy involved if all the rounds involved freestyle games. But on the other hand, I don’t want to cater too much too turtle and grey specialists.

So if you’re interested, please sign up here. If things go as slow as the last tag-team tournament (God forbid), you probably won’t have to play more than one game every week or two. It will cost the leaders a lot of time (though of course it will be an awesome mental exercise) but it won’t be too rough on the participants.

If I get picked there will be some blockbuster trades! :p I only have one question, I read all your rules but don't recall it saying if the leader plays or not. 1. I enjoy a good freestle game every day. I'm online a minimum of an hour a day and I've never turned down a challenge (unless I get two at the same time then its first come first serve.) I'm an average freestyler. My best game format.

3. Grey games have become a nice strong suit. I worked a few months under the grey banner until I decided it was time to join the big boys.

5. I'm on GL for multiple times a day. I work best late night after 9 p.m. but I log on during lunch and dinner breaks at work. Occassionally, my weekend job keeps me away from the computer when I have to travel en route to games but I have no problem working around a schedule with notice.

For clarification sake on the rules: So if the No. 1 player wins in round two he plays the No. 2 player if not on his team or what? How will that part of the bracket work out??

Clarificication. My question is after the first round there is only one player at each seeded slot so how do you figure out their next match?

I.E. Say for some odd reason I play Dragoen Link and he loses (let's just remember this is hypothetical). So now there's me at No. 1. while Dragoen is out of the game. So who do I play in round two? Will I continue to play the next best player on the opposing side until they are all gone?

First, this hypothetical isn't perfect because in the odd numbered rounds, three types of rosters are used and in the even numbered rounds, only the freestyle roster is used. But to explain how it works, assume there are only freestyle rosters.

if only i were still gold i would so love to be in this, as i consider myself mid-level at all aspects of the game, i think i would be traded to every team before the start of it, maybe if i can find a dirt cheap computer then i would re-gold and then you could count me in, but otherwise, sounds like an amazing tourny, would also be cool to start evryone out on their home server team, and then let the trading start from there, if somehow greys are allowed then i would sooooo love to join, but i cant see how it would work, so good luck, and may the best franchise win!

Do what you can to increase interest. Just telling people that it's worth reading would have a lot of benefit, because I'm convinced a lot of people haven't read it because they're intimidated by the length. With a strong recommendation, we can get more people involved.

I'm in. I'd like to be a Leader if you have a place for me. I'd like to think I'm somewhat respected among these forums and in this game, although if this isn't true I will see it contested in due time, no? :)

Additionally, I have past experience as a war leader and offensive coordinator as such. I believe in our last war, VS. BG, we ended up leader vs. leader... And I lost. My abilities as a turtler, perhaps not as sound as monkus'.

Now, five points.

1 - Freestyle: I am quite a good freestyler. Not the best (probably not close), but I can give the higher-ups a run for their money. Specializing in durable formations, not quick-strike rushes or bombs. Victories include but are not limited to: SpLiFF, Life Sucks, allstar, Cuathon, legit penguin, terps rock (All GL), jojos, The Big Kahuna (among many others from Army), just about everyone in my clan... I'd probably have to say a 78 out of 100, maybe a little more.

2 - Turtle: I'd like to consider myself a very skilled turtler, not the best, but well versed in all styles of turtling (assault, power, hybrid, defense). Placed third in the four-unit tourney using defensive turtling principles. Messed with the best, lost a lot, learned from it. :) Nowadays I teach my clan members to turtle, and wouldn't you know it, a lot of them have gotten really good at it. :bigsmile: Some key victories inclue monkus, zzzaacckk, wolfman, Shiny Flors, The Sniper, actgfin1234, Clacker, Dragoen Link, Berz, 2xfire, umm... Actually, I've beaten almost all the people I've turtled at least once. Hats off to the ones I didn't (Bodexxx, carlos22, Allstar, WaCk, Hoolwath and Cavour get special mention there). I'd have to say at least an 86/100 as a turtler.

3 - Grey (no drop): Easily my strongest point in my opinion. One of the best greys around (although I have my difficulties), member of Gold Jumpers, have taken down several high-ranked golds through battle as a grey. I use an unorthodox two-Pyro grey spread, excellent for Furgon killing and combatting Cleric-kill and spread-damage rushes. Some top golds I've beaten would be Titan65, Game Over, justinkaye, lil510mofo (with default setup), dark_ash_h50, zoma (Great Lakes, although those aren't the only top-ranked ones I've beaten), x-useme, x- maxamillion, Digital Juice (Armageddon, not limited to these players). A final note about this list of ranked (or formerly ranked) golds: I am including your names on the grounds that there isn't shame in losing to a grey. If you feel ashamed at the thought of losing to a grey, I will remove your names out of respect, for willingly giving me these games despite the fact that I was grey (excluding lil510mofo and x- maxamillion, who I had to jump). :)

Some other greats I have beaten (this time grey v. grey) would be legit penguin, nosferatu (the formerly undefeated grey for that month, taken from 1463 to 1449), Xar, and others...

Maybe 93/100 total, if you'd all be so kind as to give me that benefit.

That brings my score to 257/300, or 85.7/100 overall, as in... I'm not a legend by any stretch of imagination, but I'm the kind of guy who could put up a fight against one. :)

4 - Name: LonelyTylenol on Great Lakes and Revelation, The Internet Bovine on Armageddon (also have access to Revelation, just don't use it).

5 - Activity and Reliability among leaders: Hours of the day, and hopefully irrelevant, although I hope to be a reliable leader...

I think you misunderstand. I'm saying if I was a leader and I didn't get you in the draft, I'd trade a lot to get you on my team. I wouldn't trade you, but then again I'm not going to be a leader. Seriously, it was a compliment.

And we don't know whose team you'll be on yet. We'll have to wait till the draft.

1. Freestyle is by far my gold strength, and i can put up a good fight against almost anyone.
2. I'm a piece of sh*t when it comes to turtling. simple enough.
3.Grey is my strong point, I'm better at that than any other aspect of this game.
4. as always, I'll be using SI Gold Grey on rev. on the 21st of this month, I am gong gold on the account I'malive24/7 though, so i may have a chance to use that in this tourney.

3) My gray skills are at least as good as my turtle skills, I use a non-standard (meaning non-turt) form that surprises a lot of people and has served me well for ages, I would rate my gray skills at a least a 9.5.

You would select your team the same way as everyone else, by pooling every non-leader participant together and selecting your rosters with the other three leaders.

This of course means there will be five leader hopefuls and only four possible leaders, which means one of us five would get the boot.

1 ) well i guesse this answer applies to all of them, at one point i was real good with freestyle. I went from 1500 - 1590 almost fully freestyle without a loss and have beaten fry, big x and other thugs. but id have to practice before i got my confidence back with that.
2 ) Turtle use to be my favorite thing, but never really my best. same with above. at one point I really couldnt find someone to whomp me(besides gladiator...who always beet me opposite side) but unless i practiced ill be shaky here. but yeh, geek, glad, lt, and blud, bottle are all some thugs. but watev i get beet by peeps too(like glad...alot)
3 ) grey is deffinetly my best thing. 1500 with a no drop grey form without a loss. 1 - 0 with bottle 1 - 0 with big x 1 - 0 with xyx, won the SI grey tourney and im ric's personal trainer :) i think im about 16 and 0 with him or so. even though i just got pagowned by wolfman becouse of my rustiness and stupidity im guessing i could stop sucking at this after alil.

Well I orginally was always freestlye. I preferably play old school to emilinate the noob cannon. I will play either way tho.

Turts. Im not a turtler but I have done nothing but improve my turt skills recently. I must say I am getting better.

Grey no drops!!! Thats all I like to play. Get that double cleric bs out and see whos got best stratagy :P I rarely play grey but when I do. I tend to pwn.

I prefer turtles to just about anything else when I have to use gold units. 1:0 with monkus, 2:0 with DL, 2:0 LT, 1:1 zoma, draw with Allstar, 0:3 ~Glad~, 1:0 Shiny, 2:0 tyu, 2:0 Cav, 2:0 Sniper, 2:1 Dan U, 2:0 Blud (Although he beat in Rev-Res tourney, I used one scout there)... Glad is the only one who ever outplayed me in turtles. 8/10

3. I think I like grey the most. I lead Gold~Jumpers. I always play non-drop. I could count my loses on fingers. 1:0 Allstar, 2:0 Wolfman (both same and opposite side), 0:2 Realist (the only grey who ever outplayed me, although it was couple of months ago), 3:0 Mich, 3:0 Ric, 3:0 Cav. Cant think of other good greys.

I play with my grey turtle form against gods too. I got a 1700 gold by seven, Chaosti by 6 opposite side. Couple of other 1400 + golds and lots of 1400-800 golds. 8/10

I don't know when it will be. I'm going to allow at least a few more days for signups. If no one else wants to lead, that will speed up the process of picking leaders (naturally). It kind of depends on how quick the leaders are in getting their parts done. The battles may be ready and assigned in a couple of weeks if we're lucky. I would predict more like a month. I don't mind too much though because the drafting and the trading is one of the most interesting parts anyway.

When does this thing start? I have a big commitment coming up, and only when everything has settled down will I be able to be on regularly.

If it's going to be another 2-3 weeks before it starts, I'll be able to enter, and maybe I'll have time to lead a team, but I can't be sure. For now, put me down as just a team member.

I'm handy at freestyle. I've beaten a couple of good players, although I don't keep a "trophy list" like some other people, so I can't say exactly who I've beaten. However, I do remember beating players such as FryLock, Twelve, and CRX, merely because they're in my clan and I need the bragging rights. :cool:

As for turtle, I used to be amazing at 1 scout, but now I've grown lazy and can only use 2. Against opposite side formations I will very rarely be beaten, and same-side I can hold my own except against people with advanced stone golem with the intention of wisping my cleric first-turn. :rolleyes:

I've had a lot of practise at grey, and again opposite sides I will rarely be beaten. My formation is not particularly suited to same-side, but if I can weather the initial storm (usually from mages), I can beat most players. I haven't lost a grey game with my normal formation for about 4 months (although I haven't played many good players in that time), and I'm currently rated 1100ish using only the default formation.

As I said, I do have a commitment approaching, but I should be able to play games if I am given a definite time to be online for. In 3 weeks, I will be available full-time, although I will not be online full-time unless necessary. Edit: my time zone is GMT +1 as well, but I can be on until quite late at night.

I don't think battles will start for a few weeks, though we can be sure they won't if that makes it easier for you (and assuming everyone else concurs). I'm going to be picking leaders in probably under a week though so unless you can put significant time in right slap dab in the middle of your busy time, I think you'll have to stick with being a player.

The Exile: I’ll go ahead and put an asterisk by your name, just in case. The time-consuming things about being a leader are: first, the draft process will take some time, unless you happen to be a freakin’ noob and you don’t think it through carefully. Then trading could take a day or a week, depending on if leaders are on at the same time as each other. But of course, you’re going to want to think it through well because you’ll want players that are good at different things. Then once your team is finalized, you’ll have to rank all your players in the three categories and send me your list. You can show others if you want, but I’m the only one that needs to know. That list will not be changed. Then, each round of the match against your first opposing team you’ll have to decide which players you want to play what matches. To be well-prepared, you will probably want to test your guys yourself to see how good they are in comparison with each other. So a good leader would probably require some time. We’ll see how things look in a few days, no big hurry to make a decision.

Fudo: The actual fighting part of the tournament probably won’t start for several weeks. There is a lot of pre-tournament stuff to take care of first. Think of it in sports terms: we’re in the offseason, setting up teams and stuff. The regular season doesn’t start for a little while.

Hoolwath: I strongly suspect you won’t be chosen randomly. I also suspect you’ll be chosen early.

Dape: Each team will need to play different kinds of games, so it’ll be up to your leader. But if turtle is your specialty, the leaders will take that into consideration when they draft people.

The more the merrier though, if we can get more people to sign up that would still be awesome. If we get enough, we can expand and have two more teams. Then we'd have a round robin in the finals, which would be pretty cool. And if we get a whole bunch of people, we could add two more teams and have three rounds instead of two. Of all the leader wannabes, I think he's the most likely. He has a great deal of support right now and he has been very enthusiastic and helpful in recruiting from the beginning, even before it became obvious that this tournament would be a success.

Well, as long as your heart is in the right place I suppose. ;)

On an unrelated note, Berz is our milestone 40th participant, meaning we are now guaranteed 10 players for each team! My vision for this tournament was hoping for 10-15 players a team, so if we get another 20 players or so, I might expand it to six teams. If we end up with less than that we could just have the teams be a little larger.

Help me out on this, what do y'all think? How many players do we need before we add two more teams?

I would recommend each team containing either 12, 15, or 18 players, so it can be split evenly into freestylers, turtlers and greys in the first round to simplify matters a little.

I'm thinking 12 would be a good number as a minimum for members of each team (assuming we get seven more signups). So if we end up with 72 or more, we could add two more teams. If we have less we could just increase the size of the four teams. I'm still very open to suggestions but this seems like a reasonable thing to shoot for.

In turtles, I'm quite good. I have beaten wolfman, Bottle (once because of luck), Bludhoundz, Blazedaces, FryLock (4 times), and Nomar's rush vs. my turtle. I have beaten ~Glad~'s rush with a turtle of mine, but that was a while back.

In freestyle, I can play an okay game, but I stand no chance against dsms.

As far as grey games go, I can play pretty well. I got 2nd place in Glam's tourney with the noob setup thing... yeah. I beat roody poo which is something to brag about, because he's very good.

I don't know where your information is coming from but Glamdring has told me personally that a tourney with enough participation and excitement would get a prize.

All the participants will get chosen by the leaders, who get to take turns picking players. The leaders choose the best teams they can. You'll know when you get picked, don't worry. When it's picking time, I'll create a new thread about it (by the way, I am absolutely dying for that to start).

Signups end Monday morning at 7 AM eastern time. That morning I will post the thread we can use for the draft.

2 - Long time turtler, very good with furgon, and have a good, reliable form. I have beaten bottle, meletus, rantzu, hulky, many others :) I just figured you guys would know them, no, I do not have perfect records against them...I wish :p

3 - I believe I excell at grey games, drops or no drops, a couple names would be rantzu, karlson (legends), bottle (back and forth :) ), and some intense games with snarr, wolfman. I take pride in my gray game.

Well, I really want to join this tournament. Then again, the problem is that I can't play much lately due to school. I can only play at most six games per week, possibly less. If you like me, a very limited player, to be on your team, feel free to do so. A good advice from me is that let me be the last pick. Picking me could possibly mean picking a no-show noob. Last player to be picked!!!! :cool:

Here are my skill assessments.
-Of all types of game, I dare to say my current high point would be in turtle. I have beaten at least seven golds' rush with my turt before.
-As for the freestyle, not bad is all I can say.
-I was a good gray before I went gold. I don't know about my current gray skills since I haven't play a gray game like forever.

By the way, I didn't read the rule. I am afraid that if I read the rules, I might keep thinking about it until I go crazy. So, I will wait till the tournament starts to read the rules. :bigsmile:

DL convinced me to join, but I'm putting the warning right up front: I can't be reliable. On the weekends I can get on, and I can get on around 8-9 on weeknights (Pacific time) but neither of those are for sure. If you pick me, it would be wise to know that you will have a backup, because I may be a no-show. I can't help that.

As to my skills, I am an above-average freestyler, I win most of my games there, but I am not excellent. Think 1400-1500 level.

Turtles- I'm pretty good, especially in "finesse" games (i.e, slow-paced, each player uses furgons.) I'm a better turtler than I am freestyler.

Grey- Definately my strong point. I average a loss every month or so, even when I'm playing a lot. I'm of the chanty/bw variety USUALLY but I'm very flexible. I'm undefeated the 20 or so times I've use LonelyTylenol's grey rush, and I'm unafraid to use nearly any type of formation. I'd feel fairly confident even going in with default setup.

Well, I am probably only be available on Weekends. There is very little chance that I can play during the weekdays, that is after October first where I will devote my time to school activities. I might be able to play if I have little homework or finish homework early, which I doubt.
Plus, scamming through the participants made me realize that there are a lot of players who are better than me in the tournament. I probably stand no chance of fencing(hmm, I like this word) them off. So be warned, leaders.
