Wow. That's really all I can say when I think about the new Nintendo Revolution. Nintendo was certainly right, the console's controller will be totally new and original. Think magic wand?

i wouldnt like that controller, only because i tend to have outbursts of emotion during gameplay, and i would probably rip the cord apart, and the controller isnt everything, i would make rather have a better console than a better controller. But seeing as the only game system i have is a psp, i cant make a good judgement, but i do have friends that let me play their stuff.

I want cheap, fun gaming. None of this expensive add-ons.
If the controller is no good to use on its own, that's a big point against it.

Q: Can you give us an example of how it might work in a game?
A: Sure. Imagine a fishing game in which the pointer essentially becomes the fisherman's pole. Gamers simply make a casting motion to send the line flying and pull back on the pointer to tug a fish upward once it has taken the bait. In a sequel to Luigi's Mansion, the pointer might be used as a flashlight. Gamers point to the area they want to illuminate and Luigi's flashlight spotlights it. Voila. In a tennis game, the pointer becomes the racquet. Players swing the device as they would a racquet to smash tennis balls back at opponents. The list goes on and on and the options only increase when the peripheral's expansion functionality is considered.
Fishing game? Tennis game? Luigi's mansion? That's what Nintendo can come up with for their new system?

Fishing game? Tennis game? Luigi's mansion? That's what Nintendo can come up with for their new system?
My roommate is really big on game systems, and explained the whole thing to me. He said Nintendo is launching certain games to carry the system through its release and showcase the various talents of the new technology. Where other systems are upgrading graphics, graphics, and more graphics, Nintendo is doing what it has always done best, improving gameplay. Think about all the great N64 games, I still have them and still play them, despite the shitty graphics, because of the games themselves. Multiplayer, multilevel games that stay fun, stay new, and stay interesting, at least in my opinion.
One of the pilot games will be Smash Brothers, or so I have heard, and the way the system works will revolutionize gameplay (get the pun there?), it already has Sony and Microsoft shitting in their pants. Games that are more interactive than ever before, and that come with free, that's right FREE, add-ons, like a steering wheel for a racing game, or special "gloves" for a boxing game, that sense movements and respond like VR simulators. Nintendo is offering all this at cheaper than the other systems (around $200 for the system, around $50 for each game, including add-ons included with the appropriate game). The add-ons mean a new level of game play that is more interactive, where combos of specified movements, not combos of buttons, create the desired effect.
I think it will be very cool, and can't wait for it to come out. If you are all about graphics, then go for PS or XBox, but if you get tired of playing a game once and getting tired of it, then this is your system. Think quality of play, not quality of image.

Nintendo hasn't released all their pricing, but so far they have about $200 worth of add ons for their system (compared to the 360's and PS3 which have over $500 worth  )

The way I understand it, the add-ons will be absorbed in the price of the game, and I don't think they are all that complicated. The steering wheel is simply a holder for the controller that allows you to "turn" like a steering wheel, with a few extra sensors I guess to detect that movement. They may cost extra, but I have read that they are supposively going to be free.

VG cat's artist/writer had a great article that basically sums up everything I've been ranting on against Nintendo on their site. Go there if you want to read it...
http://www.vgcats.com/
The short version...Nintendo is cool, but this control setup (and all the add-ons, which aren't "revolutionary" or remotely unuiqe ideas) is basically a customer scare off. They're not in the position to come out with risky features and ideas for the console market. They will already be last to the field for the release of their system, and they have the lowest solid fan base now after the blasting the Gamecube took.
Basically...what the hell are they thinking? When you're leader or in a strong position, THAT'S when its ok to bam out controversial feature's and setups. But when you're struggling to compete, you need to stick with what people want, and give them it. They can't tell you what you want in their setup with 2 other competitors having the jump on them.
edit: hahahaha, ok, watch the quicktime vid they have at the bottom of the artcle. Its the video ad for the controller, absolutely hilarious.
edit2: Double you fun by reading the new VG cats comic, which makes fun of the new controller...(special rep to the first person who can correctly explain the CD-1 reference and Link's presence in there ;))

Megabyte, that "add-on" is a mockup put together by IGN, and in no way actually resembles what Nintendo has announced.
http://cube.ign.com/articles/651/651559p1.html
"Nintendo has not yet released official imagery of what the controller shell might look like. However, we've created a mock-up (above) based on what we know of its functionality. The real controller shell is likely to connect to the free-hand-style pointer in a very similar fashion. Please note that we realize our model is not entirely to scale, but this is the best we could do on short notice."

must be why I like it. :)
Actualy, it has nothing to do with age or intelligence, Nintendo has games diffrent from other systems, more family games. If you think its more intelligent to play games where you push a key and it hit an animated character until he's dead, then I guess thats your opinion. Personaly I don't think any games have to do with intelligence, unless you get into tactics games, or puzzle games. (tetris[sp?])

What Blast??? More Gamecubes were sold in Japan than Playstations and xbox's put together. While, not as many were sold here in the US, Nintendo broke even on that system less than 6 months after it's release. (Microsoft never did recover from the manufacturing costs of the xbox) Nintendo has been nothing but profit since then. Plus, the massive amounts of money that the Gameboy models have brought in completely erases any other "blasts." Including the loss that they took with the N64. Which, btw, was negligable.
Right now, Nintendo is riding on a big fat balance in the bank. (Last I checked it was around 12 Billion) They have never ceased bringing in profit. Americans just aren't big on the recent games from Nintendo.
The Nintendo revolution (read the articles, its in there) has one purpose. To bring in a different kind of person in to the gaming market. Sure, current gamers are going to find plenty of goodness in the new system, but those other people...the ones that don't like video games...those people may find something usefull in this new system.
I will make the prediction now that Nintendo won't be able to outsell either Xbox 360 or PS3. Those two systems have too many close minded fans that won't be willing to try something different. Fortunately, the Nintendo Revolution might actually bring me back to console gaming. I can't wait for it's unveiling.

The Gamecube, is one of the more stable systems and Nintendo has never ceased to have the highest quality out there. My PS2 and XBox are both broken while my GC is still cranking out Resident Evil like it was new. The problem is that the game choices are dull and limited.
I'm not dissing old school Mario, but old school Mario is just that, old. Super Mario Sunshine was a joke.

I realy think they should take it back old school... throw in the boxes that you have to break and the fire power/flying power, just update it with the new graphics, and a new storyline... that'd be sweet :)

Playstations maybe, but the PS2 outsold the Cube everywhere. Dreamcast outsold the XBox during it's launch, not much competition there

I bought those thinking they might be actual bongos, or at least like an electrical guitar. Unfortunatly, hitting them just makes a dull thud, I have more fun hitting my pillow. I like the remote control idea of the controller, but to give away that many free ad-ons seems impractical. I don't have space to store it all. I'm not in Japan, and while I can appreciate the significance it has for the companies, I don't really care what sells there. Nintendo (or any of the other console makers) aren't gonna go broke, obviously, from lack of sales in one nation. However, since gaming cultures are so radically different between the various areas, its not within my reasoning to comment there. My ideas are based solely on sales and fan base in the US.
N-Gage alone should show people that profits (apparently) aren't a singular concern for the hardware makers (for now at least). I don't think it's good business, or necessarily good for the gaming industry, but its the way they seem to operate. If you're reasoning is that Nintendo made more money and that makes it ok for them...well, I have an Xbox and PS2, but wasn't willing to go out and buy a Gamecube for the 4 or so games I wanted to play on it.
How exactly is their system going to bring new gamers to the market? It's a nice fancy statment, but doesn't explain how it will done.
And the fanboy thing is EXACTLY their problem. They're killing their fanbase by being creative on this level. Gamer's (in the US at least) like a simplicity in the means to play. While I grant that the new controller is definitely a interesting integration of some past ideas, its not what I have in mind when I go to play Mario Sunshine or SMB Melee.
And don't talk Nintendo system luving to me  I've got every Nintendo system except the Gamecube (all the Gameboy models included) and their early CD based system. It was a sad day I decided to get the othe systems, but after getting some Live action in and playing FFXI online, I think I made the right choice.

Alright, I can buy into the natural part. Plus, I'd like to actually have a shot of trying it out on the demo's that they have before I really trash it, which isn't likely to happen soon.
But sitll..multiple add on's? Better if they incorporated more into the controller. I just don't see it as having a good feel to it when I play games other than a shooter. But, as I said, gotta give it my own try before it should be completely discounted, right?

I am kinda skeptical about the controller...don't get me wrong. I am not singing it's praises. I just think that people should quit giving up on the only company who is trying to make video games better through gameplay and not through pixels and polygon count.
Hell...even diehard halo fans will tell you that Halo 2 is the same game, just with better graphics.
Gamers will eventually get tired of graphical ingenuity. Nintendo is preparing for the time when gameplay actually starts mattering more.

"New" Revolution News (i.e. for some reason I missed both of these things and feel like and idiot for not seeing them earlier)
Rumored Nintendo Revolution Specs:
2 G5 1.8GHZ CPUS
512K L2 Cache
1200 MHZ Front Side BUS
600MHz GPU with 12MB embedded 1T SRAM
128MB 1T SRAM MAIN MEMORY 600 MHz (L3 Cache to CPU and GPU)
256MB 400MHZ NEC design embedded DRAM
Embedded 16-BIT HD 7.1 Digital sound chip
Dedicated sound bandwidth with zero affect on CPU
6GB HD Dual Layer Panasonic Discs
When combined Rev CPUs equal 3.6 GHz.
A 3:1 balance ratio between CPU and RAM
1:1 balance ratio between GPU and RAM
These are RUMORED specs. Not the official release. Also, the rumor is several months old (from mid June), but I couldn't find anything disclaiming it, so....
Lastly...
The download's for the Revolution that would let you play the old Nintendo games via ROMs? Well..it IS happening. Their VP George Harrison released a statment some time ago about it the feature being included on the Revolution for sure, and how all 1'st party Nintendo games would be free to dl and that he encouraged 3'rd party companies to make theirs available as well.
HOWEVER, in a remarkable move to crush the spirit of Byte and his love for Nintendo...their president (whose name I am not gonna respell because its hard) said that the old game ROM downloads will NOT be free by any means. Also called it a baseless rumor (last I check, their VP wasn't a "baseless" source) and it was absolutly not true.
So, I'm gonna go cry now =/ This has seriously compromised my plan to hold out and get the Revolution when it came out.

edit: and as a side note, I think its laughable they're going to try and charge for these games, seeing as the massive number of fan boys out there have hundreds, if not thousands, of their games already dl'd in ROM form..
I'm sensing a outside mod for the revolution in the opening weeks of it's release which lets you play ZSNES on it if their onboard setup won't play these ROMS. (yes, I made this edit because I'm not feeling bitter)
