Pro-Sports Style Tournament: Team Selection

All right, signups are closed, leaders are chosen, now it’s time to figure out who goes on what team. All the info on how the rules work is on the first two posts of the signups thread. Put simply, Dragoen Link, AllstarGL, Lonely Tylenol and The Exile will take turns picking players, with an order that works like this:

First player chosen by: First leader
Second player chosen by: Second leader
Third player chosen by: Third leader
Fourth player chosen by: Fourth leader
Fifth player chosen by: Fourth leader
Sixth player chosen by: Third leader
Seventh player chosen by: Second leader
Eighth player chosen by: First leader

Then it continues in that pattern. Unfortunately, LT hasn't PMed me a number yet so we don't know who will be in what slots. As soon as we figure out the order, the draft can begin. Leaders could PM me I suppose but I'd much rather let the whole thing be public so please post here (unless we can get it done on AIM or something, which could be a lot faster).

The list of players (66!) will be on the next post, where I will update what the teams are as the draft continues. The third and fourth leaders will end up with an extra player each, due to the fact that 66 cannot be evenly divided among four (not while ending up with whole numbers anyway).

The draft and trading parts of this tourney is actually what I have been looking forward to the most, so I'm feeling very excited at the moment. :)

Edit: The Dragon Tyrant will be allowed on the front row only if you tell your opponent before your match and give him the option of playing an opposite sides game.

Wolfboy,as much as you like to be first in everything, I doubt that you will be the first pick. As for me, I am heading for the last pick. I am probably the worst player in the pool. Worst in the sense of my inferior skills and not dependent at all when it comes to the TIME. Unless, you really want wolfman or warcow or frylock or realist, I would recommend to have the third or fourth pick prevailage.

In case anyone was wondering how I chose that number, have you ever put your name into a number? Like for instance if your name is Joe, the J is worth 10 points because it’s the tenth letter, the O is worth 15 points because it’s the fifteenth letter and the E is worth five points, adding up to 30 points. Well, I chose a number by doing that with the full name of a particular um, “lady-friend” of mine. :bigsmile:

Wolf-boy, it is called "not left out." I am sure a lot of people hate being the last pick because they think they are the least wanted, or like an extra that nobody wants. To me, being last pick doesn't really matter, since I am always last pick when it comes to sport. However, I tend to be one of early picks when it comes to academics.

I just want to make it clear to everyone not to get discouraged if your not picked as early as you hoped. There are a lot of great players in this tourny. If you go later on all that means is you have more to prove. I just want to stress to everyone that our leaders arn't perfect so don't expect us to know all of you. Hopefully everyone can just be happy to be apart of this and not worry about when you were picked or who your better then that got picked higher then you.

The analyzing of the choices of the different leaders and the way the teams will be shaping up (just like pro-sports) is one of the biggest reasons I wanted to do this tournament. It's like everyone that isn't a part of the tournament gets the chance to be fans like people are fans of baseball and football.

There might be a faster way to do this.

You have a complete list of all the recruits.

Have each leader rank the order of preference they would like. Then you can sort of auto-pick the players for them based on who gets first turn, their preference-list, and availability.

Now, I know one of the criticisms of this idea will be that the leaders would chance their preferences based on who they would get in previous rounds...

I have an answer for that too...

Do your auto pick routine like 5 players at a time. Then post the rosters every 5 rounds and let the leaders submit a new preference list.

Anyways... just a suggestion. 2 picks a day will take a month. I'm not pressuring you tho, this is tought to organize and forums aren't the best means of communication sometimes. Whatever u do is cool, we all appreciate your effort.

As to the suggestion, I considered it and LT actually recommended it also. And yes, the changes in preferences kills the idea for me, especially because there are different kinds of games to be played. Don't worry, we won't be averaging two picks a day.

Reasoning is....

If you do it that way, you will end up with a fixed priority list, which won't happen, because the priority order will change based on what the other teams pick (say if someone picks all the freestylers in their priority order, the others will be left turtling because of their fixed priority). If you pick actively, you can change your order of priority based on what is now the most necessary, as opposed to what was before any picks were made.

Someone asked if other people can join now. Signups would be closed for the final time but I really wish we could get just one more person. Then we'd have even teams that could be divisible by three, which would be awesome. OmegaShin's brother (I think his name is omegagalaxy) wants to join. I need to get a way people can contact him. If I can do that, he can join so keep that in mind when you make your decisions. I want one more person so if LT wants to wait, that's his choice.

I found this source code for a Tourney system. Its in PHP.

I'm going to try and host it. Since I've never used it before... I'd say there is a 50% chance I'll get this running today. If I can get this working, we can load the list, give the leaders accounts for their teams, and run the draft. Perhaps that would speed things up.

Is this something u think would help out? Continue picking for now until I can confirm this will work...

I don't see the advantage of your method over all 4 of us being on Rev, with Mithrandir there as well so he can copy the teams onto the forum. I might not be getting what you mean, but it seems it would still need all 4 of us online, and picking teams on Rev would be just as quick but without the trouble of setting up ANOTHER system to work things out.

I tried 2 packages, one worked but the draft feature was so weak, I didn't think it would help.

The Other package requires I install an entire phpbb forum with direct access to the forum database to run. That is proving to be a bit more trouble than I have time for.

I'm looking at a third package... but at this point I think u guys should continue with the current draft. I'll try to have this ready for the next time we do a tourney like this.
