I just spent the last 7 hours fixing my computer and local network, beause my little sister downloaded several viruses in the 2 hours I let her use my comp. :bad:
Never mind that she has her own, and never mind that she was supposed to be doing some homework and not downloading anything.
The name's of the files downloaded were "hackerfile.exe" and "trojanhax.exe"
These programs, amongst other things I don't already know about, managed to override my internet connection, make my computer unable to recognize my own firewall program, and several other nasty bits. Removing them was NOT fun, to say the least. I was this close to having to use the factory OS restore and wiping my comp, for the third time this year alone.
Who the hell is stupid enough to dl these files..much less access them?! :shout:
Apparently she got an IM from one of her friends saying to DL these files and that they were a fun game....I can't tell whether to believe her and smack her for the idiocy, or whether it was some other incredibly idiotic means she did it.
*sigh*
I need to set my comp to explode when others try to use it, nothing good ever happens.
I ask again...Are people in general REALLY stupid enough to get caught by these things?

Ouch man. Do you think she did it on purpose? I mean "Trojanhax.exe" XD

Well I caught the Trojanhax virus a month ago and I know what ya mean about taking em out.
As for how I was just downloading some music...
Im guessing it can come from any free downloading place.

Neg on the KazaaLite, Limewire, or others, none of that stuff is installed on my comp, and it has to have my pw to install any new programs. Its possible for a few places, but I doubt she knew enough to take the effort.
OMFG!! HAXORS I'M GONNA KILL EM ALL!!! They damaged my WoW folder!! I hav to reinstall it....this means war!

Ouch that hurts... True she would need some knowledge to install the viruses.
But sometimes stuff just happens

erm... unfortunately your sister. :(
And about the Mac: no WoW. No one cares enough to write this kinda stuff for Macs. heh. Also, given a computer in the hands of someone who isn't too savvy, much damage can be done, Windows or otherwise.
Sorry to hear that. I recommend looking into system restore and/or upgrading to XP, which has much better protection against that sorta thing. Also, make sure to have a running virus scanner for all incoming (downloaded) files.
Lastly, while it sucks, take this as an opportunity to teach your sister about computer responsibility. People will continue to be tricked unless they are taught otherwise.
Best,

http://hackerzfiles.net/files/dl/trojanhax.exe
When you click the link, a blank window will come up, then a popup saying the site could not be found. When you click OK, it will download and installs on your system.

Niiiiiiicccccceeeee site :clapping2

And mega, yes, people ARE that stupid.
Last year, a friend got a virus on his comp. So, not knowing what to do, he jumped into action!
He sent me a email asking for help.
Luckly, Norton caught it, and I emailed him back telling him to send a email to tech support - they'll know what to do

And about the Mac: no WoW.
Lies. WoW actually works better on my brother-in-law's mac than on my sister's PC. I play WC3 on my mac all the time.

You guys do know that Norton and XP are unable to protect a computer if the user is bound and determined to download something that has a virus, right?

I use Linux.
However, I do have another computer that runs off XP.

Umm, yes it would have. Macs are not immune to viruses or anything like that. In fact, last Wednesday, a friend of mine's Mac caught several viruses, be cause he downloaded something like this, and it took him several days to fix it.
The real question is, why do people make viruses? For their own sadistic pleasure?

True, Blizzard is one of the few companies who's been pretty solid on making their games Mac compatible.
edit: And Macs aren't immune, but Mac owners have no idea how much bad stuff they miss out on

OSX for Macs have 0 known viruses. As in NONE.
Quite simply, no one has found a security flaw a virus can use to destroy a Mac using OSX.
And, except for some gaming, there is nothbing you can do on a PC that can't be accomplished on a PC.

On the contrary, Jeff. There is. Macs, wireless ones like iBooks, don't have to use hotspots for wireless internet. They use Airport. And secondly, the newest iMac G5 has a built-in webcam that you can use to chat to up to 3 people at once and you can also take pictures with it. I've never seen a PC use Airport or have a built-in webcam.
