View Full Version : Sudden Hearing Loss?

My brother (he's 16) woke up this morning, and found that he couldn't hear out of his left ear.:confused: And it was the truth. He could hear out of his right, and all other parts of his body were functioning properly. So I ran a search on google. All I found was things that said "Sudden hearing loss can happen after skiing or scubba diving", well he hasn't done any of those his whole life. He tried cleaning out his ears, he never did anything noisy the night before, he didn't go swimming either. So what I'm trying to figure out is, how did this happen? And is there a cure? Or is it just a minor side effect that will clear up soon? Because he has recently got his wisdom teeth pulled, and he has been on medication. Your thoughts?

Could be an ear infection. Could be he punctured his ear drum while cleaning out his ear. Could be he needs to talk to a doctor, and not the internet.

He did, but still no answer from them.

Ear wax. I had it once. Go to a doctor, they will clean it out.

If its not wax, then, well, go to a doctor.

I'm not doctor... So I'm just gonna guess its the medicine?

Meh, but wow, that sucks just waking up and not being able to hear out of your left...

So the internet is his second choice? Well, try searching 'new ear' on ebay?

Hmm, ok then, thank you all for responding. Hopefully the doctor calls...But as ***Duo***'s thread said, flu season is just 'bout here, and they're probually busy with alot of other sick kids.

Wish him luck. And remember, now you can say bad things about him, as long as you do it on the correct side. ;)

Maybe the doctor did call back, but your brother couldn't hear the phone ring...

* crickets *

Not one of my best jokes, I admit.

All ( or almost all ) kidding aside, if I suddenly went deaf in one ear, I'm pretty sure I'd actually GO to the doctor.

But that's just me.

Lears is right, it's happened to me before as well.

it very well could be from his wisdom teeth, but it would have surfaced right away, not even more than like two days later. swelling could cause it. i wouldnt say it's the medicine simply because the medicine you get after getting your teeth pulled are antibiotics (if it was a rough procedure) and pain pills. niether of these would cause hearing loss in just one ear. other cuplrits would be exessive ear wax build up. he wouldnt be able to clean this out himself. he'd have to have a pro go at it with their special tools. we're talkin way more impressive than the common q-tip.

my bet is swelling after getting the teeth pulled. just sounds about right. if not, then i'm saying ear wax. if not that, then he might be in some big trouble.
