View Full Version : Too Laid Back?

I have this weird problem. I like it in most instances though, I'm grateful for it.
I involuntarily do not care about most things.
School is the best example. No matter what I do. No matter how hard I try. No matter how much I push myself. I just can not bring myself to do anything. Fortunatly I've come to the realization that I have "Ferris Bueller Syndrome, or F.B.S.," as my mother has come to call it. I basically just breeze through life. But aside from that, I just don't understand the not caring thing. I cannot bring myself to do anything that is not important to me. I've tried to, but I can't.
But it's good in some instances. Such as I do not get upset by insults, or drama.
Does anyone else have this problem? Involuntarily not caring?

there's not caring, then there's not caring.
Laid back and not caring means that you're not emotionally effected by whatever and do what you do from physical choice and logic.
Not doing anything and not caring is a lack of thought. You don't understand the benefit of doing whatever and simply don't do it.
That's just my thoughts along it. I'm more the first sort myself.

I don't know how to word it.
I involuntarily care about only what I wish to care about.

Yea, I'm kind of the same way. It sucks though with school, because I know I need to get a good grade or something, but when it comes time to study or something I just can't force myself to care enough to do it.

Exactly. It's like I do care, but then my not caring completely kills the caring.

I'm partially like that. I'm a little laid back (not much), but I have this thing of not being emotional. I rarely cry, feel sorry, get angry, etc. Its like I have this little package called "emotion" hidden away somewhere.
It gives me an advantage in arguments because I'm never offended.

not true. i care about the interesting classes. i do all the work there. but it has to be something that interests me. i try to make myslef do it and i make plans on how but i can't. i getin a lot of trouble for it too. if i could control it i would. things that happen when i dont are worse than doing it.

Uh, yeah... I struggled with this A LOT in high school and my first two years of college especially. For some reason it seems to have come back in the past couple weeks for me.
You can call it laziness, but sometimes it's just so much more than that. There's quite literally no way to actually get yourself to do what you know you should, unless you are interested or engaged by it.

I think the biggest issue some of you are having is just not seeing the immediate incentive. The only incentive you get for working hard to study is to get a good grade. But what does a good grade alone do for you? Nothing... it slightly raises your grade in the class. A good grade in your class will slightly raise your GPA and your GPA will slightly increase your odds of going to a good college which will slightly increase your chance of getting a well-paying job. The problem is, when you have that big ass project and you don't do anything on it, it individually has relatively no effect on your future career so you don't try hard. Then a second project comes along, and it builds until it makes a significant impact on your career.
To me, it's more of a lack of responsiblity and maturity - to be able to plan and evaluate for your future and doing the work that needs to get done to be able to enjoy yourself long-term.

Yeah and most of these guys have only a couple options...
Some of them turn out to be entertaining television stars on such prestigious shows as "Cops" or "Dog the Bounty Hunter" (I love these guys... thanks for not caring so I can laugh while you drive drunk in womens' clothing trying to score hookers & some blow)
Or they turn out to be the guys who suck the crap out of Port-A-Potties after the high school football game (twice as dirty as a garbage man with half the pay... what a sweet job!)
Either way they should be able to afford a nice double wide when it's time to retire. :p In conclusion, I agree. School sucks and is totally pointless. Don't bother trying because high school doesn't get you anywhere anyways... so overrated! Ooh Cops is on!

Pinkie, I think you're partially right.
Most of my problem is that I have a set future. I'm a Martial Artist, and I teach for a living. I don't have to go to college (okay, so I have to take one buisness management course at a community college http://img469.imageshack.us/img469/5239/biggrin2uf.gif), so I don't have to worry about school... At all. As long as I graduate, and I will, because as I said, I breeze through life somehow. I always come out smelling like roses.
But I also didn't worry about school before I had the job.
My job also makes me really laid back. I love being there, and I basically hit stuff all day. Stress relieving? For the little I have, very.
I'm single, so no worries there.
I'm in the Vocational program, so I basically just sit on my computer in Drafting for the first four periods and do whatever I want. The teacher loves me, so he lets me pass so long as I keep to myself.
I'm so lazy and laid back to the point that I shaved my head because hair is too much work, wear sandals all year round almost every day, and wear my pajamas under my pants all winter.
Nifty, no?
Edit: For those of you older members, if you remember "Life Is My Bitch," it might make sense to you now.

My natural reaction is to say if the job you're doing now pays well and you love it, you can afford to slack off.
But then again, what happens if you get physically injured? Aren't you kinda screwed?
Good luck with your martial arts... I hope nothing happens to keep you from it.

If I get hurt:
I get pension.
I'm insured.
I could take an administrative job overseeing the schools.
So yeah, I'm pretty set. I get paid good, and will be making more once I graduate. Kids and wives are too much work for me, so I won't have to worry about extra expenses. I hate driving, so I'll never have an expensive car.
Basically: I have close to nothing to ever worry about.

A couple of observations:
1. People generally don't like doing things they don't like to do. People generally will try to do a lot to avoid doing many of these things. Let's call this "laziness."
2. Laziness tends to lose out to necessity. When people have a choice between working at a job they highly dislike and starving, people usually decide to work and live.
Since Ach's career future is pretty much set in a job he loves, there's no reason for him to worry about anything else. For those of us without that luck, though....we're going to have to learn how to stop being so laid back some day. Our only choice is whether we want to make it easy or hard.

Right now is a good example of this...
I have a big math test Tuesday, and I really need to do good on it. I already have a 0% I'm betting, because the first quiz we took, I missed some classes and surely failed it.
Anyways, so we got this review packet stuff, and I really should've done it. Not because it was homework, but because don't know how to do have the stuff (can't force myself to pay attention in class) and really need to learn it.
But of course, I pushed it off till today, and all today I told myself I'd do it later. Never could get myself to do it. And yet, I can get myself to be sitting here and typing this.
Now tomarrow, I've got to try and cram and learn all this stuff for the test which I suck at doing. Worse part is, I have plans for doing other things. Other things I WANT to do, giving less time to be at home studying.
Nothing new though; this happens often. Sad thing is, I can get myself to be sitting here typing to random people.
Edit: and to what Realist said, I have no clue what I want to do in my life so I really should be trying to do good in school now because I'm probably going to college for something. I guess that's why I DON'T care. I don't know what I want to do, I don't see anything to really work for.
I should really shut up now.
