Hm, well, thats interesting, my friend is a Naval Engineer. He thinks the US is a tad behind in its tech intellectuality, which most of you already know, if you look at China, Japan, Korea, and some other places, you can plainly see that the US does not have as good machinery as they all do. So sad. Oh well.

hmmm.... before the arrogance levels go up even further.... :p

there are two things that make the Ivy Leagues what they are:
1) age - no other school can ever enter the league because they simply weren't around back then
2) the graduate and professional work

Undergrad isn't on that list, because, frankly, most Ivy schools neglect their undergraduate students. Harvard does have the best library, Yale will always have one of the best law schools. Heck I'm published through Columbia Med, but their undergrad, on the other hand: not the top.

If you want to take a look at the Princeton Review's ranking as to best undergraduate education, only Yale so much as makes the top 20 list. Iceman's school, on the other hand, pwnz0r3d Harvard AND Cornell.

So, if you're studying to be a doctor or lawyer at an Ivy League institution, you have every right to wave your arrogance complex. Till then, let's just keep things in perspective. :wink2:

...and do try to maintain a minimal respect for the non Ivy's as well. :)

MallaLubba
12-20-2005, 12:23 PM
"age" is one reason Miami University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Ivies) is known as the Ivy of the Midwest. It was established in 1809 and beats out Cornell. :p By the way, that image of Alumni Hall on that link is where I spent the majority of my life while attending. It's the architecture building.

And technically there is only one thing that makes an Ivy league what it is: its predetermined athletic conference which has as much to do with geography and privatization as anything else. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivy_league

The rest of the connotation is earned via academic excellence and selective admission.

Twelve
12-20-2005, 12:30 PM
Such are the words of those bothered by not being in an Ivy League school...you know, there are plenty of books about that, which I'm pretty sure the two of you quoted from... :)

Meanwhile, I don't recall the Ivy Leaguers giving the non-Ivys a hard time...what's up? Those in the Ivy League are proud to be in it, and once you're in it, we tease each other anyhow.

12

MallaLubba
12-20-2005, 12:36 PM

12-20-2005, 12:59 PM
yes well, I have read none of those type of books. But if you are from this area, you know what the "H bomb" is, and it gets rather annoying from the undergrads when it's the grad students that got that reputation. As I said, I'm published because of an Ivy, but not their undergrad school.

What I'm saying is, if you want the best undergrad education, you shouldn't be looking at Ivies. If you want the best graduate education, pray you can get in one. ;) That's not jealousy, but pretty good advice. Let me know if you disagree.

Going THROUGH Cornell is rough...they say that of all the Ivy's, it's the toughest to STAY in (while they say Princeton and Yale are the hardest to GET in, but once you're in it's a breeze). Many don't make it...figuratively and literally. But once you're done...you do feel as if it has improved every aspect of what you are, as it truly did for me.

There's a reason I choose Williams over those two :)

I got into Williams, and seriously considered going there.

the trouble with Williams for me:
- No easily accessible movie theatre. I know that seems silly, but I live for movies and I want to go to Hollywood after graduating, so I need need NEED a big movie theatre nearby that i can get to w/o a car.
- In the middle of nowhere. My freshman year I freaked out and went home basically every break. One time I got snowed in in Boston. That was bad enough. I have friends who live in the area and theres still stuff to do even if the planes cant leave, so it was bearable. But if I had been snowed in in Williamstown.... oh man.
- No grad school. Hello upper level classes? Ok ok they have a GREAT math dept. But I dont think they have a stats dept, which is my field.

Dont get me wrong, Williams is a great school, but it is not for everyone

I'm going to the University of Groningen studying International Organisations and International Relations, and I'm hoping to be able to study a full year at Queen's University in Kingston next year.
Wow thats pretty cool kingston is only about 4 hours from where I live.

Well, that's freakin' AWESOME. Congrats. Oxford was one of the schools that I dreamed of going to, actually. That's awesome, good for you.

Actually, Oxford is the only school that I really WANTED to go to...I never did apply as it turned out, but that's how it was.

When I make it allstar, we should go get a beer sometime, together with Crater.

I don't think it's that far from New York either. I always wanted to smack the "dark knight of TAO" around a little bit.

Anyway, I'm definitely going to make a trip to America when I'm in Canada.

But, lets first make sure I'm actually allowed to go :)
