View Full Version : My freestyle form...

Alright, well I figgured a couple of days ago I'd play freestyle. No rushes, no DSMs, or no GAs... anyway, I just randomly pick out a form that might do well, and it turns out it gets me 2-0. The first victory was from a gold with their stats in the 1200's (verses mine in the 800's) and the second in a match against a high 700's player. I'm wondering if my form is any good, and if I should keep using it.

My form is a defensive form with range and power on my side. I have my stone to power up my 3 knights and my dragon, and my two scouts to deal some damage to units before they get close enough for my dt or knights to pick 'em off. My frost is just there for backup, just incase someone ever needs paralyzing. I would use dsm and pyro instead of my scouts, but the way I play (no dsm) wouldn't allow for it and I would need to find a good place for my dt so it doesn't get killed too easily.
My question: Is my form good, or did I get lucky both times? If it's a good form, should I make any changes to it to make it a bit better?

You probably got lucky both times. Knights aren't exactly the most ideal unit to armor. I suggest that you change your formation altogether.
If you're not fond of rushing, I suggest an anti-rush because, unless your games are set up with legitimate players, stone golems are simply wasting a space in your formation. I can't hook you up with a great anti-rush at the time (I'm sure someone else would be more than willing to). Dual-scouts are a bonus for players here and, thus, they should both be a part of one's 'stone-cluster'. The reason why knights are a poor unit to armor is because they already have a lot of armor (and blocking percentage). However, what they lack is movement--before one would be able to launch a successful flank on the opponent, one's opponent would already be behind his or her lines, negating the effect of the armor and giving them an open shot at one's cleric.
It's a good idea to have one or two knights (at the most) in your formation as they are great if they manage to survive near the end of a match. I suggest not worrying too much about your cleric, though--it's too easy to lose it with the formations one has nowadays.

Well, I find that I can work better with a turtleish setup than an anti-rush. The reason why I say turtle while this form is not a turtle, is because my form is clumped up and has defensive units. While this form might not be too great, I wouldn't want to switch to an anti-rush because I wouldn't really be able to work the form too well.
Anyway, I think I have found a good fix to the main problems that you've suggested. What would happen if I switched my outer knights with the scouts, and the center knight with a mud? This would give my scouts and mud (three long-movement semi-damaging units that lack in armor) the armor bonus, and the knights the movement they would need to prevent flanks by being on the outer-edge of the form instead of the inner. Would that be a good change to make to this form?

swordz first off, i posted an apology on that blood mermaid unit thread if you didnt catch it, and secondly switch the side knights with the scouts so the scouts can be stoned. fairly good turtle, but everyone has a similar one to it... nothing special

that is a turt, I wouldn't use a turt in freestyle because a rush could eat it up

Notice: I play freestyle --- no rush, no dsm, no ga. :p
I'm also thinking about switching the frost to the other side of my stone, and switching it out with a barrier ward.

freestyle, no rush? that doesn't make sense
freestyle means rush, anti, and turt are allowed
If you mean you play freestyle matches with a turt, I say, you shouldn't. Either use a rush or an anti or else a rush will eat your turt up.

Well, from my understandings freestyle is a custom game... unless specifically mentioned... and those are my three specific rules in a basic freestyle game. And as long as people will play me and go with those rules, I'm fine with it.
Edit: I would play a turt game, but I hate same side turts because you now know the opponents form and can place a bward up on the same side front line to get bombed, and I hate opposite side turts because it takes forever to get the game going because nobody wants to leave their form...

say what???
you specify if you want a turt, rush, freestyle, or grey match.
You usually don't say let's play a match where you can use either a turt or an anti...

yup yup, look at the red box under your username. That shows how much reputation you have in the TAO forums. The more green boxes you have, the better. Red boxes means negative rep
