Me, the wonderfully paradoxically skilled grey nub moves to legends. Grey vs. Grey, I. Kick. Ass. Humility is one of my greater virtues. In all seriousness, I have beaten some of the master tacticians, but have also lost to many of lesser skill. I've dedicated my entire TAO life to the grey game, too ghetto to go gold, yo. After 6 months, it's lost some of it's shine. Opp side? KnightKnightScout rush kekekeke, hope your knights block well. Same side? LWWitchburnBWSnipe his knight, then rush kakakaka. It's the top of hill. Where a grey has reached the limit of their abilities, where they want to see something new.
So I moved to Legends. It blew my mind. I was nubbed. I'm not used to losing so regularly. So many players were so skilled. I went in with my chantyBWturt, so cocky of my madskillzlol. I laid my avatar down. Almost every single dropless game was challenging. As opposed to the hordes of omgf5ctrlwnubs that you are inevitably paired up against over here.
It was the greys with drops that PWNED me. PWNED me like a car running over roadkill. PWNED me like I pwned your mom  . But anyway, wow. I realized how narrow my range of skills where. I had no idea how the handle just about anything they threw at me.
Game 1: Multiwitch form (9witchmuddie). Horrible death by dark magic. My turt was just too lined up...owowowowowsizzle.
Game 2: 2ClericBeastieMuddieFrostie turt. Opp side. I thought this would be managable. Just like a souped up regular turt right? NO WAY. I tried to flank, but after some bad blocking, he repelled me with his knights. Alright, no problem, I'll defend. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!! Scout and Beastie and Muddie, oh my! They tore my enchantress and cleric apart. He pressed me back with knights. Normally, I would just have to deal with a single scout, which I did. But the second wave beastie/muddie combo murdered me.
Game 3: 2FrostieFurgon turt. Same side. With 1 mage, do I even need to explain? Lets just say I'm happy I didn't get flawlessed.
My hapless trip to legends bursted my big head. I could be good at the dropless grey game, but in the world of TAO...it's just a grain of sand. The purest, most tactical grain of sand, yes. I love the struggle though. The challenge, the hill to climb, BRING IT ON.
Lol rofl lol. I'm experimenting with a firepower spread, pyropyro instead of BW and enchantress. With the abundance of range, I'd rather have them than the chanty I used to be so in love with. But no love lasts forever, her incompetence makes my heart bleed the tears of autumn ashes /emo. Anyway, it seems to be more effective than my usual turt when up against forms with maggoty droppings in them.
With that said, when I get my drops...BRING IT ON NUBS! I rock.

ROFL. First time I played on legends, I lost all my matches despite my beastly 2 witch, 2 cleric turtle.

Legends has some of the best greys ever though so it whouldnt surprise me. I"m only 1023 there as grey and I was 1300s avg when i first played so no worries man.
(i've had that account for a year also.)

Well, I don't doubt you're a good player serpent, but you can't say you're amazing and then lose to those legends nubs :p
Its a bit surprising the first couple times, but you get used to it. :) A suggestion is getting used to playing against gold strategy - if you can do this, playing greys with drops is basically playing golds with slightly fewer pieces.
I have a grey on legends (dropless) at about 1400.
If you want a game, look for me (my sn there is bludhoundz). :)

Well, i guess the responsibility falls upon me to be the noob who asks the noob question. Since when does Legends exist?

I'm not quite sure whether you're playing along with the old FPS joke (we pretended legends didn't exist), or if you're actually asking the url for the legends server (www.digisonline.com) is.

Indeed, as you said your skill set is narrow but you will adjust. My 750 grey once beat a 1600 grey there that had 2 frosties. I had only one mage and it was same side. The one thing a game like that does is teach you how to use the scout/bward combo to maximum advantage :)

That's weird. I went over to Legends about a month ago to look into what all the hype was about. I set down and got into a few matches that had large drop advantages, but pwnz3d them all. Units don't mean crap if you don't know how to use them. Then again, when noob golds jump me here I generally hand them their ass in a doggy bag, so I'm a bit used to the style I suppose. Right now the thing I haven't really found a way to get around as a grey is a wisp/ga/muddy/scout rush to my cleric, or a stone/frost/dragon/scout turt. Generally with paralyzing units i bring my scout up midfield and BW, then rush with knights. Can't do that with a teleporting dragon and 2 scouts... :(
(btw, if someone does have any decent advice about advanced greys dealing with mid-advanced golds, please let me know)

After a couple of hours...I've got my game together. I'm just beginning to appreciate how much I don't know about TAO's units - I should really start challenging some golds as well as good greys. Hey, learn something new everyday.
Tactical stuff I learnt about units:
1) Muddies should be kept at bay by sniping at it when it's coming in. Isolate, force a retreat. Also, KnightLWKnight kills muddie, even with 1 heal.
2) Frosties just require some patience. Correction: A LOT of patience. A paired knight flank needs to be more coordinated and supported than ever.
3) Keep three eyes out for beasties. Sometimes, they can pull a fast one on you. Be on your guard and their just a weak lil man on a weird horse.
Strategical stuff I've learnt:
1) When against turts with drops, getting the offensive is paramount. It's not good to defend against beastie/muddie/scout backing up knights.
2) Spreads murder witch rushes.
3) Furgons are hairtearing, larnyxrippingscreamly irritating.
Basic stuff, I know, but it's been so long since I've actually THOUGHT, instead of just reacting from instinct to overly familiar greyvgrey situations.
One question: With a BWenchantress turt with 1 witch...how exactly does one deal with the furgon in an opp side game? It's very difficult to move my witch for safe bush clearing. And a single furgon can halt a scoutknightknight rush as effortlessly.
Defending? I'd rather not, but I don't seem to have much choice. Or I can resort to my dual pyro spread. But that would mean no enchantress...awwwwwww

My experience is much more like uniqs than yours...
I've had FAR more great games on here than on legends. Granted, many of those were from years ago, and perhaps grey skill has decreased on TAO faster than on that other server. But I went to legends a week or so ago, crushed anyone who opposed me, dropless grey, drop-full grey, gold or double gold. Not difficult at all. Most legends greys are quite bad, even the 1400s-1500s.
I'm undefeated with my dropless set. I could never do that for too many games on Banff or Great Lakes; some supergreys would try to humiliate me and one might suceed. I've never been impressed by the quality of legends greys.
For one things, they are very drop dependent. Which is why you see even their 1300s screaming in the lobby, WHEN WAS THE LAST DROP?!?!??? There are only two scary grey drops; mud for same side and frosty. Beast Rider is no better than anything it can replace. Extra witches; well, witches die really easily by scouts and knights.
Furgon. I've been saying it since the first furgon game I played when I crushed a 1600 legend gold with my basic grey units, 90% of furgon users help me with their furgons rather than themselves. You block off one of your sides and you also block off one of your opportunities to attack. This allows me to close you in and snipe at you without worrying about repercussion. I try not to even kill furgons, since every bush they make is a bush that helps me as much as them, sometimes more.
Yeah, muds are difficult. You're right about sniping them before they hit you initially so they can't hit and run. Opp side, muds arent a problem, but same side combined with a frost they can be very hard to deal with. Still, most legends greys I've played don't utilize their muds to their fullest extent.
Frost on other side basically means you can't attack. At least not until you have a significant advantage. I suppose any legend grey with a frost could force a draw by just playing a perfectly defensive frost form and not giving you a chance to counterattack against their attacking units, but then again, most good greys on our servers could do the same.
Frost on same side, you might have to sacrifice a bit to deal with.
There are two units which legends greys very often fail to make use of in order to play drops instead. Enchy and BW. Take full advantage of this, and you should have no problem beating 90% of them. :)

hmmm, it seems that my inital awe was from dire inexperience against goldie drops and exceptional opponents (for legends).
I'm starting to understand what blud, uniq and xyz mean now, even though they're better players than I. None of the 10 1400-1600 players I've played afterwards seemed to understand the importance of the enchantress. They sacrificed their ranged to kill my knights...then a loss is almost out of the question for me. It's apparent that their completely drop dependant =]
There aren't as many genuinely good players on legends - but I still think it's easier to get a good game there than on FPS. I live on the opposite side of the world than the majority of you guys, so it's a long wait for a good game sometimes. On legends - just pick a lesser player with drops and let the drops provide the challenge =]
bleh...I'm moving back to banff...

Yeah Realist hit the nail on the head: a noob with an extra cleric, witch, or a mud/frost golem is still a noob. These players rely on what they think is advantage, without actually improving skill. The same goes true for the golds who jump me - they prey on greys because their inherent unit advantage helps them against most. However, at the heart of these players, they exhibit poor tactics and judgement.

The best players on legends (from what I've seen), are those in the 1200-1300 range with no grey drops.... at least compared to those 1500 triple frost double mud assholes

Who would use 2 muds?
Oh and if someone wants to play my grey bill241 in a turt vs. turt match, go right ahead. Yes, I use quite a lot of drops, but I'm fairly good with them. I hated the fact that I had to take out my bward + chanty combo, since I oringiated from FPS.

Yep, the varying skill levels are ridiculous. I have an uber-grey-turtle on legends, and I've only lost once with it, since I completed getting the drops. (Interestingly, I've won all the rare drops +3 frosts and I've never even seen a cleric drop).
But the skill level is so much lower. Admittedly, dual frosts give me a major edge, but I'm amazed by how many 1400+ players over there just take the bait. I freeze a knight or LW, they send the muddy in. I pulverize the muddy or retreat and freeze it. Then I freeze the knight or LW again. Now they bring their scout up to break focus. So I switch frost onto the scout. Boom. Scout gone.
Now, I could see an inexperienced player doing that - it's sort of an instinctive move. But 1400+ players who have multiple drops themselves doing something so silly?
It boggles the mind. I think they're spoiled by their drops. Every so often, I take all the drops out and play a few no-drop games. That always gets me re-centered.
But yeah...Legends grey talent base kind of sucks. I'm almost up to 1700 without really any tough challenges.
There are some good players there too...some guy from CG with 2 clerics and 2 frosts beat me...and I've had amazing games that ended in victories for me against varg, uknowme, and bill241. (I use a few different accounts, not all of them with fun drops, so those players may not have known it was me.)

No luck, couldnt find it
Also, to give my 2 cents on this matter that i havnt been contributing to at all, most of the experience ive had are against 750 noobs who are playing their first game. although i do get some good games, they are few and far between. other than statsing every player before playing, is there any other way of finding better games?

Ask in the lobby "Any greys want to play?"
Usually the noobs/newbs are too busy spamming and jumping people to respond
