View Full Version : Female Superpower Movies

Am I the only one to notice a dramatic increase in the number of movies that are coming out recently that involve a single, superpowered heroine that defeats evil?
I saw Resident Evil 1(for the third time) yesterday, and it got me thinking. Resident Evil 1 was this movie about a bunch of decently skilled fighters beating back zombies. Resident Evil 2, however, completely shifts and moves to two women, one with genetically-mutated superpowers, beating amazingly powerful enemies.
It was then that I noticed that today, MANY movies are taking this shift. Look at a few examples that came out recently:
Aeon Flux (2005)
Underworld (2003) and Underworld: Evolution (2006)
Ultraviolet (2006)
The similarities? They all involve some superpowered woman beating down bad guys. They all involve the heroine having some sexual relations (because obviously no woman could be a hero without having some man in her life too, right? Damn you Hollywood), and they all will probably have mediocre plot lines.
Thoughts?

Dude, Underworld 1 and 2 were awesome. Although Underworld 2 had a borderline porno scene, not that I'm complaining but it threw me a loop sitting there next to my girlfriend.

Smile at her and wink. See what happens.

None of the movies represent any new material or original idea. They're all takes off stuff that's been around for a long time. And yes, its all just hollywood raking in money on hot outfits.

SEE WAITING! FUNNY MOVIE
That being said . . . I think it is trying to draw in more female crowds, but allowing females to be the main stars in an action movie. Back a while back, it was all "Oh how do I hold a gun while my lover tkaes off his shirt and fights a guy when he could've just shot him in the first place?"
Now its more "Back off beotch, what makes you think I won't cut you?"
It's drawing in more men (to see women like that) and more women (to also see women like that, but in a different way)

The first Resident Evil was also an awesome movie, one of my favorites. Mila Jovovich and Kate Beckinsale should star in a movie together ;)
*cough*
RE2 was a joke. Better than the endless shit stream of remakes though.

The thought of the RE movies were good...but the actually effort put into them sucked. I for one love the game...but the movie did a good job in showing what was going on...but it just didn't feel the same as playing the game. There was no sense of being scared, like in the game when you open a door...the whole game gets quite and your wondering whats gonna happen...but in the movie it was all predictable. Ya feel me?

Anyone remember the end of LOTR where that chick killed that uber-awesome Demonking?
That was probably the lamest pro-woman addition I've ever seen. I don't even care if it was in the actual story. It was ridiculous.
Such a uber-awesome Demonking deserves a decent end, not some smart-ass chick dropping an axe in his face because she couldn't carry its weight.
Or did I miss some important message?

Ultraviolet = Remake of Resident evil
Meh, it still looks worth seeing.
But yes, I have noticed there are quite a few action-woman hero movies coming out now-a-days. It's an interesting genre if done right. The Underworld series is quite good. I also thought Aeon Flux was like a matrix-assassin flick, which was great. Ultraviolet looks like the two combined in a way, so it should be good.
