My rules include...
1. ) never attack unless there is something to be gained
2. ) don't move unless its useful to move (you can attack the opponent from back, you retreat to safety)... an example is don't move towards your opponent with the scout if you already have a shot at your opponent.
3. ) attack from the back whenever you can, unless it puts you unit in more harm then you will do
4. ) try to get your opponent to break apart there setup, I actually try to get them to come to me so i can isolate and kill them.
5. ) don't use your chanty ( enchantress ) until you know how to use it
6. ) change the starting setup so that your cleric is in back with your lightning ward in 4 spaces in front of it
7. ) this was a bigger problem before you were assigned a random avatar, but look at the colour of someones name BEFORE you go into battle to ensure you don't accidentaly get into a fight with a gold... in times of olde golds would put there avatar as grey knight and trick unsuspecting nooblets into fights they are almost garanteed to lose (just because they are newer)
