Annoymous Mods.

I got this idea yesterday. Anyway, I'm sitting in the lobby of Arma with my gold. And there are no mods around, and the greys are out of control.
So... I then convinced the loud greys that I was a mod, and it worked... for 15 min. Now, granted, that wasn't alot, and when they realized I coudln't boot people, the scam was up. (It was pretty funny though).
So, thats when I realized TAO was going about this mod stuff the wrong way. RIght now, TAO appointed more mods to keep TAO under control. THis doesn't fix it. It helps, granted, but doesn't fix it, because there are times when no mod is on and people don't have anything to fear.
My idea: Annoymous Mods.
What I mean is, haveing a 'hiddin' account that doesn't show on names on the left; doesn't chat (anything would have to be through Announcements in the lobby); doesn't play games; and all mods have access to it. One per server.
So, instead of people fearing the mods, who aren't always on, they fear "Big Brother," who could be lurking in the backround at anytime. The hidden account would have full mod powers.
THEN, greys will have something to fear. As opposed to:
"oh great the mod iz gone!!11!! letz cyb3r!!!"
It will be:
"shhh the hidden mod thingy could be on, shut up!"

There's a problem with this idea - we wouldn't be able to warn anyone that they are doing anything wrong; meaning the tradeoff for this is that people get booted for first time offenses every time. What I try to do now is have a grey logged in as I sign out with my mod account. The people who act up upon a mod leaving do so because they know it's wrong, and I *do* deal with them without warning. However, it's hard to tell intent, whether the person actually knew what they were doing was wrong or not, outside of this method.

Idea! If you don't mind me expanding upon your idea: invisible mod accounts. We'd be there, we just wouldn't necessarily be seen, and we can still warn appropriately.

I often "moderate" on the name monkus. The way I see it, a gold's warning for a real offense should count for no less than a moderator's warning. I'll rarely observe on a gray, but I do it if I do think someone's waiting for me to leave. Like uni said though, there needs to be a warning first.

Actually, A thought to this... a sort of pm warning way, in combination with invisible, that way, it is not publicly brodcast that a mod is there when you warn them about doing something wrong. and have tao record those warnings to your IP address. That way, someone can’t create 400 accounts and get them all warned once, once banned you aren’t going to get in for a while. It would be a hidden way of doing so also.

And well, I don't know how many of you are Star Wars buffs, but here is the Tarkin Doctrin: "Rule through fear of force rather then force alone." What this means is, instead of having people fear the mods (like now), they will fear TAO. There's nothing more scary then 'something' lurking in a server that you can't see or talk too, yet can boot you.

Just beacuse a canadian dollar is worth more doesnt mean anything. The cost of living in canada is adjusted to be approximately the same. The price of a couch that say in the US is worth $500 in canada may be worth $600 canadian.

Woodland, they/we used to do that; but its extremely hard to maintain the context of conversations while running 3 windows. While switching back and forth you loose whole parts of convos.

Recently Uniq coded a new TAO screen that allows us ro run 3 screens horizontally. Perfect for just reading the lobby chat.

I actually convinced the banff server that I could do this once.

I just stayed "away" on aim so that if something went wrong, someone could contact me, and I'd appear out of thin air, making the people convinced that I could do this.

And as monkus said, we can also moderate from gold accounts - the powers, but we can switch accounts pretty fast :)
