I played a game against Omega_paladin just now and wards ruled the day.
It was my first game against a non-default troop setup, and the first thing i found was omega's lightning ward sitting right across from mine. The first section of the battle was a duel between our two lightning wards (seperated 3 spaces apart in the exact front center) (his was flanked by 2 knights, mine was flanked by knights standing a row behind and staggered)
My pyro wreaked havoc on his front line forces at the expense of his own life (owing to my witch being a single step too far from combat) our scouts held a shootout on the north side of the map while our magic users fought over the center (until the fall of his lightning ward due to a fatal lightning blast).
The attention then shifted to the south where my remaining magikers and his frontline were fighting it out. the deciding factor there was my barrier ward, which covered my spell casters between blasts, letting them stay in the middle of the battle unmolested.
Finally, he only had 2 knights, an assasin, and his cleric to my scout, barrier ward, lighting ward, knight, cleric, and witch. My witch went out in a blaze of glory, taking the cleric with her... so much for them. The rest of the battle was fairly straightforward as he could no longer heal and I had a lightning ward still. My barrier fell while attempting to divert attention from my cleric, but the battle ended in my favor (as it had to, since i had the lightning ward to his no magic in the end).
