I played a game against Omega_paladin just now and wards ruled the day.
It was my first game against a non-default troop setup, and the first thing i found was omega's lightning ward sitting right across from mine. The first section of the battle was a duel between our two lightning wards (seperated 3 spaces apart in the exact front center) (his was flanked by 2 knights, mine was flanked by knights standing a row behind and staggered)
My pyro wreaked havoc on his front line forces at the expense of his own life (owing to my witch being a single step too far from combat) our scouts held a shootout on the north side of the map while our magic users fought over the center (until the fall of his lightning ward due to a fatal lightning blast).
The attention then shifted to the south where my remaining magikers and his frontline were fighting it out. the deciding factor there was my barrier ward, which covered my spell casters between blasts, letting them stay in the middle of the battle unmolested.
Finally, he only had 2 knights, an assasin, and his cleric to my scout, barrier ward, lighting ward, knight, cleric, and witch. My witch went out in a blaze of glory, taking the cleric with her... so much for them. The rest of the battle was fairly straightforward as he could no longer heal and I had a lightning ward still. My barrier fell while attempting to divert attention from my cleric, but the battle ended in my favor (as it had to, since i had the lightning ward to his no magic in the end).

New battle, against Phreak. Again with the lightning ward war... but we both lost them this time. My barrier kept my cleric alive in a tight spot and kept my witch alive long enough for a suicide run on the enemy cleric. Good stuff.

Are they worth it? I guess I don't know what they do, and have yet to encounter one ...

dude, wards are where its at. they are immune to everything but magic! the barrier ward is probably one of the best support units in the entire game with its focus barrier

how would she enchant anyone when she's wearing platemail? her stun magic is all skin
hmm... makes me wonder is she could have +3 range in the buff...

lightning wards are a crutch, just like me using the enchantress... you can't win with only a lightning ward left, because only humanoid units on the field count. I've beaten too many people that way to know what I'm talking about... plus it's too slow

but it's still a deterrent. Though there have been games definately where i've gone "screw the lightning ward", let my knight take the hit, and ran every one of the enemy's cowering troops down in the shadows of the ward. the knight gets a little ruffled, but what does he care? The magical deterring power of the ward is only good until the user fires it off.

There have been times that i've had to specifically let some unit through the ward zone just because I was saving it for something bigger.

That was your first time vs. non-default setup? Wow, I thought you were pretty good. I am now play a more spread out version of the set-up you played againest when we battled. I have now stopped using my assassin, miss her in some battles, thanked my lucky stars in others I had gotten rid of her. I recently upgraded to Gold memebrship, (do it people! if you love the game, it is well worth it.) so I have put in a Frost golem. Useful those things are Yoda say. But you are very right, Barrier wards are bomb, Lighitng Wards, a very good deterrent, but I am thinking of dropping mine for an enchatress, What do yousa people think?
